*Summary: The purpose of this PowerPoint is to help students identify how temperature changes affect the

state of matter describing the three phases of the

water cycle.

*Objective Target: Given the websites on the topic of the water cycle, the student will be able to recognize

the three phases of the water cycle with 100%

accuracy.

*Standard: GLE 0207.9.2 Investigate how temperature

changes affect the state of matter.

*Things you need to know about the water

cycle.

*Watch this video about the water cycle to help you answer the questions in this lesson.

*The earth is made up of lots of water, and the water keeps going around and around and around and around. This is called the Water Cycle!

*The water cycle is made up of three main phases: evaporation, condensation, precipitation.

*More things to Know about the water

cycle

*Water in the water cycle can exist as a solid, liquid, or gas. The water cycle is very important to life on Earth.

*The sun is the driving force of the water cycle.

*Water Cycle Facts

*Evaporation is a process of a liquid changing into a gas. An example of evaporation is water turning into steam.

*Condensation is the opposite of evaporation. Condensation occurs when a gas is changed into a liquid.

*Precipitation is water released from clouds in the form of rain, sleet, or snow.

• When the sun heats up water and turns it

into vapor or steam what is this called?

*condensation

*evaporation

*precipitation

Evaporation is when the sun heats up water in rivers,

lakes, or the ocean and turns it into vapor or steam.

*You Got it!

•Rain, sleet, and snow are examples of which phase of the water cycle?

*evaporation

*condensation

*precipitation

Great Job! Precipitation happens when

the clouds get heavy with water and the water falls back

to the earth in the form of rain, sleet or snow.

• When water vapor in the air gets cold and changes back into a liquid forming

clouds. What is this called?

*condensation

*clouds

*evaporation

Way to Go! Yes, as water vapor in the clouds cools down it becomes water again, this process is called

condensation.

Summary

*In this lesson you were able to identify the three phases of the water cycle; evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.

* In this lesson you learned that when water is heated by the sun, and the water turns into steam this is called evaporation.

* In this lesson you learned that rain, sleet, and snow are all examples of precipitation.

*In this lesson you learned that when water vapor in the air gets cold it changes back to a liquid and forms into clouds, this is called condensation.
