III. Read the passages and answer the following questions. Passage 1: Jupiter

Jupiter, the fifth planet from the sun, is the largest planet in the solar system. It is the first of the “gas giants” and has no surface, though it may have a rocky core. It is more than twice as massive as all of the other planets in the solar system combined. Jupiter‟s atmosphere is separated into different bands and gives the planet the appearance of having whitish and reddish layers with various spots, swirls and bubbles. Jupiter‟s most notable feature, other than its size, is the great red spot, a football shaped area of intense storms. Three Earths could fit inside the great red spot. The spot, which is a high pressure, stable storm with winds that gust over 400 miles per hour, is said to be somewhat similar to a hurricane. Recent studies have shown that the spot has actually shrunk and that the storm may be weakening. Scientists still don‟t have an explanation for why the spot looks red. In addition, Jupiter also has a faint set of rings (probably made of dust) that wrap around the planet horizontally. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. It is nearly 318 times as massive as Earth, has the surface area of 122 Earths, and has 1,321 times the volume of Earth.

Answer the following questions

a. first

b. seventh

c. fifth

d. third

Passage 2: Emma’s Birthday Party

Emma was having her birthday party at the park. She was turning four. Her parents and her sister went to the park early to set up. One good thing about the park was that they had a lot of tables. They also had a covered pavilion, in case it rained. Emma planned on getting wet anyway, because they had slides, and they had a water sprinkler area for people to run through. They covered tables with pink and red tablecloths. They put out napkins, cups, forks, and plates. Then they put out the food, but left it covered until later. Dad made sure there was enough ice with the drinks. It was going to be hot, so people needed cold drinks! Finally, they hung some decorations. Mom set out some activities, like coloring and small games, before people arrived. There were mini water guns, too! There was even a giant cardboard castle for people to color with crayons and markers. It was going to be great. Everyone started to show up. Gifts in pretty bags and boxes started to pile up on the table. Kids started to play with a football, with the games, and with the water guns. Everyone started to eat, too. There were sandwiches, chicken fingers, veggies with dip, chips, soda, and lots of things! After everyone ate, it was time for a piñata. The kids took turns hitting the piñata with a stick until it broke. Emma took the first turn, then the other boys and girls tried. When candy and toys fell out, everyone grabbed as many as they could!

Finally, it was time to sing „Happy Birthday‟ and eat cupcakes. Emma made a wish, blew out her candle, and took a big bite of her cupcake. Everyone cheered and ate their own cupcakes while she opened presents. She got lots of nice toys and clothes, and she was very happy. When the party was over, Emma was a little sad, because it was over, but very happy. She started to wonder what NEXT year would be like...

Answer the following questions

1. How old is Emma turning?

a. five

b. four

c. three

d. six

V. GRAMMAR GAMES

A. Read this story.

A selfish fox once invited a stork to dinner at his home and for a joke put nothing before her but some soup in a very shallow dish. The fox could easily lap this up, but the Stork could only wet the end of her long bill in it, and stayed hungry.

“I am sorry that the soup is not to your liking," said the fox with a sly smile.

"Oh, please do not apologise," said the Stork. "I hope you will return this visit, and come and dine with me too sometime." So a day was appointed when the Fox should visit the Stork.

Finally, when they were seated at the table, the Stork served them both some soup in a very long-necked jar with a narrow mouth. The stork drank the soup easily but the fox could not insert his snout into the tall jar. This time it was the Fox‟s turn to go hungry.

MORAL: One bad turn deserves another.

Your Lungs

You do something about twenty times a minute

without even thinking about it—you breathe! In fact, every day

you take about twenty-thousand breaths.

The organs of your body that allow you to breathe are called your

lungs. You have two of them that work together, located in your

chest inside the rib cage.

The main purpose of your lungs is to breathe in good air and breathe out bad air. The good

air contains oxygen, which your body needs. The bad air is a gas called carbon dioxide, which

your body cannot use.

When you breathe in through your nose or mouth, air travels down the back of your throat.

It passes through your voice box and into your trachea, or windpipe. Your trachea is divided

into two air passage tubes. One leads to your left lung. The other leads to your right lung.

Inside your lungs, oxygen is removed from the air you breathe and pumped into blood cells.

Your lungs also get rid of harmful carbon dioxide from these cells. This process takes place

inside hundreds of millions of tiny air sacs.

Each adult lung is about the size of a football. When they are healthy, your lungs feel a little

like a sponge and are pinkish-grey. When lungs are damaged by smoking, they can appear grey

or have black spots on them.

One disease that is very common in children involves the lungs. Asthma narrows the

breathing tubes, making it harder to breathe. As many as nine million kids in the United

States have asthma.

You probably already know that your lungs are important when you swim. But you may not

know this—your lungs are the only part of your body that can float on water!

1. Where are your lungs located?
