THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
What is an Antacid?
Antacids
- these are substances that consists of weak bases (hy
carbonate) which is used to treat stomach acidity by neutra
gastric hydrochloric acid or preventing too much secretion o- This can be used to treat heartburn, indigestion and ac
indigestion.
- Antacids are made up of different kind of chemicals. So
common ones include Al(OH)3,Al(OH)3,or both.

Antacids are medicines that help correct the pH ba
in your stomach. Your stomach has its own natural acid
sometimes these acids become too much for your sto
to handle. This is caused when you dont eat on time
you have an empty stomach. What the antacid doesneutralize this affect. They buffer the stomachsgastric
since they are basic in nature.

Neutralization
When a strong acid and a strong base solution aneutralization reaction occurs, and the products do
characteristics of either acids or bases. Instead, a neut
water are formed. Look at the reaction below:
HCl(aq)+ NaOH(aq) H2O(l)+ NaCl(aq)
The efficiency of antacid can be determined by finding
of grams of HCl that can be neutralized by 1 gram tablet
the amount of HCl, the more efficient the antacid is. Th
can be used:
NHClX VHCl= NNaOHX VNaOH(dilution)

1. Crush two antacid tablets.2. Get the actual weight of the crushed tablets
and transfer into the flask.3. Add 50.0 mL of 0.1 M HCl to the antacid and
dissolve.4. Add 2(3) drops of phenolphthalein indicator
into the mixture.5. Titrate the antacid mixture with 0.1 M NaOH
until the solution turns to faint pink color.6. Do at least 2 trials.7. Calculate the weight of HCl that reacted with
the antacid.
