Head coach profiles

Tactically astute and a superb motivator, José Mourinho has rapidly emerged to carve a reputationas the best and most scientific young coach in Europe. In 2005 he was declared a high officer ofthe Order of Infante Dom Henrique by Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio. The Order is thehighest honour that can be bestowed upon a Portuguese citizen, recognising his achievementsas manager of FC Porto and Chelsea FC.

Born in 1963, Mourinho started his working life as a teacher before being lured into football by SirBobby Robson as part of his staff at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona. After

a brief nine-game spell at SL Benfica and a highly successful tenure at UD Leiria he became Portocoach in January 2002 and immediately transformed the club's fortunes. In his first full season atthe Estádio das Antas, 2002/03, he won the UEFA Cup and a domestic double. The next yearPorto retained their league title and sensationally scooped the UEFA Champions League bydefeating AS Monaco FC 3-0 in Gelsenkirchen.

Identified by Chelsea as the man to replace Claudio Ranieri, Mourinho moved to Stamford Bridgeon 2 June 2004 and went on to mastermind the club's first domestic title in 50 years with a recordpoints total and just one Premiership loss, adding the League Cup with a final victory againstLiverpool FC. The Portuguese agreed a new five-year contract in May 2005.

If Frank Rijkaard's second season at FC Barcelona was anything to go by – a Spanish title andsome memorable performances in the UEFA Champions League – there is no reason why hecannot steer one of Europe's grandest clubs to even greater glory.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that his mentor as a youngster was Johan Cruyff. The Dutch legendgroomed Rijkaard at AFC Ajax in 1979 where the defender progressed so quickly that he waspulling on the Netherlands shirt aged just 19. In 1987, Rijkaard left the Amsterdam club and hadbrief spells in Portugal and Spain before committing the key years of his career to AC Milan withwhom he twice won the European Champion Clubs' Cup. Highly versatile, Rijkaard played inmidfield for Milan but in central defence for his country as they lifted the 1988 UEFA EuropeanChampionship.

He returned to Ajax in 1993 and helped them, ironically, defeat Milan in the 1995 UEFA ChampionsLeague final in Vienna. When he eventually hung up his boots, heads turned as Rijkaard wasappointed coach of his country before UEFA EURO 2000™. A semi-final place followed but Rijkaardleft his post to pursue a career in club management. His first stint ended poorly, as he resignedfrom Sparta Rotterdam in May 2002 when they were relegated from the Dutch Eredivisie for thefirst time, although Barça were not put off and have since seen their faith repaid handsomely.

Born in Bergen, Norway on 5 October 1965, Terje Hauge began his refereeing career as a teenagerin 1982, was taking charge of Norwegian top-flight matches by 1990, and joined the FIFAinternational list in 1993. A health official by profession, he has also been working as a refereeconsultant in his local football association in Bergen, giving advice and helping the developmentof match officials of all standards.

The Norwegian's international rise began with the UEFA European Under-18 Championship inSpain in 1994, and was followed by the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup in Portugal and the FIFA WorldYouth Championship, both in 1997. Hauge was named as a fourth official for UEFA EURO 2000™,and went to the FIFA World Youth Championship the following year, taking charge of thequarter-final between Argentina and France.

From 2001, Hauge has regularly been appointed for UEFA European Championship and UEFAChampions League fixtures, and he was one of the officials in Korea/Japan for the 2002 FIFAWorld Cup and Portugal for UEFA EURO 2004™ where he took charge of the games betweenRussia and Portugal and Germany and Czech Republic. He also had the honour of taking chargeof the 2004 UEFA Super Cup between FC Porto and Valencia CF, having previously been on dutyat Stade Louis II when AS Monaco FC plundered eight goals against RC Deportivo La Coruña -a UEFA Champions League record.

Hauge also oversaw one of last season's finest games, AC Milan's passage to the UEFA ChampionsLeague final despite a 3-1 loss at PSV Eindhoven, before getting this campaign going in earnestby overseeing FIFA World Cup qualifiers involving France, Switzerland, Czech Republic andRomania - as well as Chelsea FC's 4-0 defeat of Real Betis Balompié on Matchday 3.

On the home front, Hauge has been regarded as one of Norwegian football's shining lights sincehe took charge of the Norwegian FA Cup final between FK Bodø/Glimt and Tromsø IL in October1996. Seven years later, he assumed control of his second cup final in his homeland betweenBodø/Glimt and Rosenborg BK before being asked to officiate the Ukranian cup final between FCDynamo Kyiv and FC Shakhtar Donetsk in May 2005.

With finals very much in vogue in the Hauge household, he was also awarded the FIFA WorldYouth Championship final in the Netherlands later that year, a game which saw Argentina overcomeNigeria 2-1 in the final.

Domestic news

Chelsea 3-1 Colchester United FCHaving lost 3-0 at Middlesbrough FC the week before, José Mourinho responded by making ninechanges for this FA Cup fifth-round tie on Sunday. Playing his first match since the African Cupof Nations final, Didier Drogba slotted in up front while Glen Johnson started at left-back withWilliam Gallas suspended and Asier Del Horno rested. Despite being two divisions below theEnglish champions, Colchester deservedly went in front when Ricardo Carvalho turned a28th-minute cross into his own net. His fellow Portuguese Paulo Ferreira drew Chelsea level nineminutes later with his first goal for the club, although it was only after the second-half introductionsof Frank Lampard, Hernán Crespo and Joe Cole that the tide finally turned in the home side'sfavour; Cole clinching a place in the quarter-finals with goals in the 79th minute and added time.

Cole said: "All credit to Colchester as they made it difficult and we needed to show a lot of characterin the second half. Last year's game against Barcelona here was magic and I'm buzzing for thatgame. We have respect for them but no fear." The defeat at Middlesbrough was Chelsea’s firstsince the 1-0 reverse at Manchester United FC on 6 November. After sealing their spot in theknockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, the Blues won eight games on the trot aheadof three successive draws against Charlton Athletic FC, Everton FC and Aston Villa FC. Normalservice was resumed as Liverpool FC and Everton FC were both defeated, leaving the championswith a 12-point advantage at the Premiership summit.

FC Barcelona 5-1 Real Betis BalompiéRonaldinho returned from suspension to inspire Barça to a convincing victory at Camp Nou onSaturday. In the absence of their Brazilian playmaker, Frank Rijkaard's team had sufferedsuccessive league defeats - 3-1 at home by Club Atlético de Madrid and 1-0 at Valencia CF - buthe took just 18 minutes to play a part in Henrik Larsson's opening goal. Ronaldinho also triggeredtwo own goals from Betis defender Melli (32 and 34) before making it 4-0 as the hour approached.Joaquín Sánchez responded three minutes later, but Barça had the last word as substitute LionelMessi (85) completed the scoring. Messi had replaced Larsson in the 76th minute, although themost significant substitution saw Thiago Motta come on for Andrés Iniesta in the 68th - the Brazilianmidfielder having been out since mid-January with a knee problem.

"We played with confidence and enjoyment," said Ronaldinho. "It was a vital win before the Chelseamatch and we now have to go to England and forget about the elimination last season." Despitethe long-term absence of Xavi Hernández and Motta’s surgery, Barcelona started 2006 as theyhad ended 2005, beating RCD Espanyol (2-1), Athletic Club Bilbao (2-1) and Deportivo Alavés(2-0) to stretch their unbeaten run to 18 matches. That sequence came to an end as Barça lost4-2 in a Copa del Rey first leg at Real Zaragoza, and although they bounced back with a 3-0 winat RCD Mallorca they were then eliminated from the cup before losing to Atlético and Valencia.

UEFA information

UEFA and the Football Against Racism in Europe network are preparing a guide for clubs on howto combat racism, as they continue to use the UEFA Champions League and other UEFAcompetitions to transmit the message that racist conduct will not be tolerated on or off the pitch.

Serious problemThe guide is likely to include issues such as racial abuse, institutional exclusion, and clubs' workwith minority and migrant communities. At a recent keynote conference in Barcelona, UEFA wasurged to take a leading role in the anti-racism campaign and UEFA Chief Executive Lars-ChristerOlsson said that racism has to be acknowledged as a serious problem within football and society.

As UEFA club competitions resume after the winter break, UEFA and a number of teams havemet for talks under the common banner of the European Club Forum, set up in 2002 as a platformfor mutual debate. It was agreed that the format of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cupwill continue to evolve as the organisation attempts to foresee trends. "UEFA's club competitionshave an impact in various areas, including domestic football, so we think it is wise to plan andthink ahead," said UEFA professional football director Giorgio Marchetti.

Lille recordThe distribution of competition revenue and payments for the release of national-team playerswere also on the agenda, while the UEFA Champions League group-stage attendances wereanalysed. In total, 3,568,172 spectators watched the 96 games, meaning that on average, stadiumswere three-quarters full. The match between LOSC Lille Métropole and SL Benfica at the Stadede France drew the biggest crowd – 76,187.

Communication systemUEFA is testing a referee communication system in the UEFA Champions League this week, having also carried out tests in last week’s UEFA Cup Round of 32 first-leg matches. The Matchday7 games in question are FC Bayern München-AC Milan (refereed by Belgium's Frank de Bleeckere);PSV Eindhoven–Olympique Lyonnais (Greece's Kyros Vassaras); and AFC Ajax–FC InternazionaleMilano (Germany's Wolfgang Stark).

'Importance'"The decision to conduct a full battery of tests comes following the proposal of the UEFA RefereesCommittee, which also stressed the importance of the tests being carried out at the highest levelof the game in order to test the system in a real big-match atmosphere," said UEFA
