The Wairarapa ArchiveThe staff at the Wairarapa Archive have been working on updating the records of the Masterton Cemetery and delving into its past, as Gareth Winter reports.

Visitors to the older parts of the Masterton Cemetery, especially the area known as the Pioneer Section, are surprised to see a number of small fences, in a wide variety of states of repair, around the grave sites.

The accompanying photograph of Thomas Wagg’s gravesite, taken by photographer Edward Wyllie in 1886, clearly shows a cast iron fence placed atop a concrete berm. In the background, other graves are surrounded by white picket fences.

This all looks a little cluttered to the modern eye – we are used to cemeteries being largely open spaces.

So why are there so many fences?

The answer is easy.

The cemetery – first used in the 1850s – was established in a large reserve, not officially set aside as a cemetery until the middle of the 1870s. It was part of a large plot of land leased by Henry Bannister and grazed by sheep. The ornamental fences are there to stop the sheep intruding on the graves.

Few of the wooden fences have survived until the present, although there are the remains of one or two. Even the cast and wrought iron fences have been damaged by weather, earthquakes, rust and vandals.

Also missing are most of the original wooden grave marke., but a careful look at the older sections will disclose a small number of totara markers. One was covered with a tin canopy when it was placed in the ground in the 1880s, and remains in pristine condition, while most of the others have lost their lettering.
