iMovie:Overview of the Interface1. Windows are:

-Project Library/ Timeline-Preview window-Toolbar - most editing programs will have some variation of this-Event Library-Event Browser

2. You can expand or contract your filmstrip layout if you want to see more or less frames at one time.

3. Can rotate the Project Pane and your clips if you need more room for one or the other

4. *Notice: There is no “Save As” in iMovie. iMovie automatically saves any changes you make but if you are using any other editor remember to save often

5. If you want to preview a certain area just drag your cursor over the area you want to view, you do not have to click but just drag and then press the space bar when you want to start playing

6. The space bar is a universal start and stop shortcut for all editing systems

7. You can also play a selection by selecting an area, “control-click” select “play selection”—The forward / is the shortcut for this selection.

8. Play buttons at the bottom allow you to play all raw clips in orderPlay button on the left plays in full screen

9. Once you have all the footage you plan to use in your Event Browser, just minimize the Event Library by clicking the boxed star

10. Once footage has been added to timeline notice the orange bar across the bottom – That alerts me that I have used that footage – which means I can do whatever I want to that clip in the project and it won’t affect the raw clip in the Browser

Toolbar Overview1. The Camera button allows you to import footage from a connected camera

2. The next button allows you to swap project and raw video panes

3. The bar allows you to expand and contract your video project

Page 2: Cheatsheet for Editing in iMovie or YouTube

4. Next is used to add a clip to your project – in lieu of dragging the clip up-It isn’t a big deal, just however you prefer to work

5. The next 3 buttons are for rating our clips and sorting the good from the bad

6. The 3 after that are for adding voiceover, cropping your clip, and for opening the inspector

7. The button with the sound waves is for muting or unmuting your clips when you’re skimming through

8. Next is the audiometer

9. The next 2 are for adding music or photos to your project

10. Next two are Titles and Backgrounds

Organizing Your Clips1. If you upload footage from multiple shoots, say your friend’s wedding and your project for class, you can create a new event and then just drag and drop footage into other events to keep your footage organized

3. Your clips are organized in sequential order

4. Mark as favorite if it is a good clip – which adds a green barMark footage as rejected footage, say shaky footage – click x button

*Note: Can select to view which footage you want to view under the “show” area at the bottom

5. If you are working on a school comp and need to store your events on your own personal external drive – go to event library and select to see all drives connected to the computer will show up --- then you just drag and drop(if you just drag and drop you will see a “+” sign which means the footage is being copied and will live in both places—If you want to cut the event select command/apple key and then drag and drop and it will move to your drive and erase from the local computer’s hard drive

Editing1. You can drag all the clips you want to use into your project and then arrange them sequentially

2. You can tweak your clips within your project pane. For example, if a clip looks too long you can control click and delete selection

3. You can add or remove frames to get really precise by clicking option and arrows

4. iMovie 08 threw out the traditional timeline which most editors still use but this new version is even simpler than ever and is really aimed at people who have no previous knowledge of editing or little knowledge about computers in general

-one benefit to timelines is being able to see the timecodes of your project (like say if it needs to be a 2 minute video)-if you are somewhat of a traditionalist you can click the single row button at the top and add all clips to a single timeline where you can view timecode (if you choose to edit this way you might want to swap windows and then it looks very similar to a traditional editing software…but if you’re new to editing this prob won’t be an issue for you)

5. You can then add transitions between clips if you don’t want the edits to be so abrupt. The most used transition is the cross dissolve but there are many available.

Adding Effects1. Go to “Clip” and select “Special Effect” or “Fade to” and make your selection.

2. Can stabilize footage in your inspector…it can take a lot of time if the clip is long

Audio1. To edit audio for a specific clip control click and select audio adjustments and then you can make adjustments—You can raise or lower levels, fade the audio in or out, reduce background noise and so on…

2. The equalizer has built in settings – for ex. Boost voice

3. Normalize clip volume let’s the comp do the work for you

4. Or, click the waveform button in the project window and you can see where your audio is high and low. This is a nice visual way to make sure your clips match in volume across the project.

5. iMovie also comes with sounds. Select the music button in your toolbar.

7. One thing that is strange is that if you want to edit to a song you need to set your music as background music because iMovie attaches sounds to a specific clip

-To do this drag and drop as before but drag to an empty area until the background highlights – this sets it as a background sound

Exporting1. When you’re finished you export under the “Share” menu

Page 4: Cheatsheet for Editing in iMovie or YouTube

2. You can export the file and then upload it through the site directly or use the YouTube feature in iMovie

3. When you choose a size choose the largest size it will allow.

4. Then the URL your video will be on will show up for you

5. You can also just export the file itself by choosing one of the options below the dividing line—Click export “Movie” you then select a location to save it and voila

-You can also have more control if you choose export to quicktime

YouTube Editor: 1. All videos you have uploaded appear to the top left, you have no choice but to see all of them

2. The video you’re working on appears in the window to the right and you have a storyboard/timeline of your project at the bottom

3. Click on the “+” on the upper right side of the clip to add it to your timeline (you can also drag and drop). Once you have added the clip you can edit the video

4. You then drag the bar on either side to achieve the length you want

5. You can also customize clips --- You can rotate, add effects like brightness and stabilization and add lowerthird text --- To access the features you just place your mouse over the clip in the timeline

6. You have the ability to add new audio by clicking the music note tab and you can select music from YouTube’s library of license free music (Note: You cannot trim or edit the audio track – the audio will stop when the video ends)

7. By default the audio added replaces the original audio but you can customize the volume at which the audio track plays over your clips

You can choose between: -Only music (default)-Favor music (plays the audio most prominently)-Equal (play original and music equal)-Favor original (plays original audio most prominently)

8. Final step is to publish
