Dear alumni:
I am privileged to spend my days with young people and with teachers,
administrators and staff, coaches, parents, alumni, and school supporters who are part of a
community working together to build something that can be life-altering, not only for the
students, but also for the adults involved. I believe that happiness and confidence grow
from persistence and genuine achievement and that we can help our young people create
their own good luck through their own hard work. After all, the world that our children
will face in the future will ask more of them than to just show up.
During morning announcements not long ago, I reminded the students what a
remarkable year we’ve had. In addition to the numerous athletic successes our teams have
experienced, there are so many other accomplishments to celebrate: quiz bowl, robotics,
speech, drama, choir, spelling bee, math field day, state science fair, students’ test scores,
college acceptances, scholarship offers, and so on. Add to these the individual triumphs
that occur each day in the classroom as teachers and students work together to master
academic material.
The bottom line at your alma mater is student success. We aim high. So for the
sake of our students’ futures, Charleston Catholic continues to be a wonderful, beautiful
work in progress. Our school continues to prosper and evolve. With the spectacular
student body, the talented and dedicated staff, the supportive parents and encouragement
from the alumni and community at large, there’s just no imagining the great things ahead!
Warmly,
Debra K Sullivan, Principal

CONGRATULATIONS!
Charleston Catholic is experiencing another spectacular year! Congratulations to the
following teams on their accomplishments:
The boys’ swim team finished third in the state meet despite only having five swimmers
compete. Swimming does not divide teams based on class (A, AA, AAA), so the
boys were competing against much larger schools!
The girls’ basketball team qualified for the state tournament for the eighth consecutive
year, under the direction of head coach Ashley Shepler (Class of 1999).
The boys’ basketball team won the class A state championship over St. Mary’s. The
team finished with an impressive 24-3 record.
The high school robotics team qualified for the World Competition in St. Louis,
Missouri, and competed in late April. They finished 18th out of 64 teams.
The high school quiz bowl team won their fifth consecutive state championship in the
AA- A division and defeated a AAA school to win the overall state title regardless
of division.

Twenty-eight members of the Class of 1961 (from all over the country) gathered in Charleston in October 2011 for a
special weekend to celebrate their 50th Reunion. The beau-tiful fall weekend began Friday evening with an informal
gathering at the Summit Conference Center, reliving old memories while watching a slide show of classmates and teachers from years past. The next day they lunched at
The Blossom, the after-school hangout in the 50s and 60s. Later that evening they had a sumptuous dinner at Edge-
wood Country Club followed by dancing in the ballroom to the likes of Conway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Plat-
ters. On Sunday morning the group attended mass at Sa-cred Heart Co-Cathedral followed by emotional goodbyes
over brunch at Shoney’s. The highlight of the weekend was Saturday evening on the front lawn of Edgewood Country
Club where they said a short prayer for their classmates and family members who are no longer with them, then
tearfully watched a beautiful display of white balloons tied with green ribbons rise to the heavens. Great weekend,
great friends, great memories! Their teachers were very perceptive when they said of the class, “Never before has
the school spirit been so sincere, so wholehearted, and so spontaneous! You have won a place in our hearts which cannot be replaced by any
other class.”

Courtney now serves as the Senate President of the Oregon State Senate. The Courtney family moved to New England shortly after Mr. Courtney’s graduation from Charleston Catholic. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s
degrees from the University of Rhode Island and his juris doctorate from Boston University. He moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1969 to clerk for the Oregon Court of Appeals. He was elected to the Salem City Council in 1974 and
to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1980. He won a Senate seat in 1998 and was elected Senate President in 2003. He is currently the longest serving Senate President in Oregon history and the longest serving current
member of the Oregon Legislature.
Mr. Courtney spoke passionately to the Class of 2012 about his parents and brothers, his wife and three sons, and the impact lessons learned at Charleston Catholic have had on his life. He told the seniors that their concern and
action is so needed, especially in terms of the environment and what will be necessary to ensure our world's vitality for future generations. Thank you, Mr. Courtney, for returning to your alma mater!

“CASEY AT THE BAT” AUTHOR SOUGHT— Longtime Read Aloud volunteer and friend of CCHS Phyllis
Sadd is looking for a CCHS graduate from the 1980s or 1990s who penned a parody of “Casey at the Bat” in Mrs. Sadd’s
honor. Mrs. Sadd continues to volunteer with Read Aloud in the CCHS middle school and recently re-discovered the for-mer student’s version of the poem. Mrs. Sadd reads “Casey at the Bat” each spring as baseball season begins and this year
found the “rewrite” of the poem. The author did not sign her work, so Mrs. Sadd does not know who to thank for her con-tinued enjoyment of the poem. Please call the school at (304)342-8415 if you have any information on the missing author!
