Case Study“The Tour DaVita”

e concept of a charity/donor event is one that is growing in popularity, and has seen success in a number of organizations. Our work with DaVita highlights how an event that is planned efficiently, marketed correctly and run well can build in momentum and ultimately prove to be a driving in%uence to an organization’s fundraising efforts.

THE EVENT

The Tour DaVita is an annual charity bike ride that is hosted by DaVita, a group that provides dialysis services for those diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. The ride features a new state each year and offers over 250 miles of riding in both rural and urban settings. This event helps fund The Kidney Trust, which is a non-profit organization that seeks to reduce the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through free, rapid screening in non medical settings and to provide financial assistance to people affected by CKD.

POSITIVE GROWTH

The ride started in 2007 with just over 100 riders and 35 staff, and has grown to approximately 425 riders and 100 support staff who keep the mobile event moving from one location to another. The ride is 5 days long and takes place every September.

THE FUNDRAISING

Each rider has individual fundraising goals, with a total over $2 million going to the Trust since 2007.

OUR ROLEJoe Solomon served as the Tour DaVita Ride Director for 5 years while he was on staff at Backroads. Upon taking the Tour Director role in 2008, he oversaw annul budgets of over 900K and annual rider increases of over 20%. He played a role in every aspect of the ride, from initial planning and budgets to site location and staffing and running the ride onsite. His involvement with the Tour and its success served as the impetus for creating Iconic Adventures, with the goal being to bring the same successful charity ride model to new organizations. e Tour DaVita has been an incredible boon to the e Kidney Trust, and we are con&dent that we will see the same success in the future.•
