Margaret H. Mason, Partner, Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP, Vancouver, BC. Ms. Mason practises in the area of trust law with a particular emphasis on advising charitable and tax-exempt organizations. She assists not-for-profit and charitable organizations with their creation, administration and registration

with the Canada Revenue Agency and has particular expertise with respect to entities involved in environmental and health care matters. Ms. Mason advises such entities on governance issues and regulatory compliance. She also advises donors with philanthropic planning. Ms. Mason lectures extensively in her area of practice. She is widely published and was recognized as a leading lawyer in the areas of Corporate Governance Practice and Trusts and Estates in the 2017 edition of Best Lawyers in Canada. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Imagine Canada and is an appointee of the Law Society of BC to the Board of the BC Law Institute.

FacultyKate Bake-Paterson, Associate, DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, Vancouver, BC. Kate Bake-Paterson practises in the area of corporate/commercial law with a particular emphasis on advising charities and not-for-profit organizations. She regularly assists both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations with a

wide variety of corporate and commercial issues, and has also developed specialized knowledge of the additional legal and business issues faced by charities and other not-for-profit organizations that go beyond those of for-profit companies. Kate is a member of DLA Piper’s Wills, Estates & Trusts and Charities & Not-for-Profit Organizations practice groups. She is also the Co-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch) Charities & Not-for-Profit Organizations subsection, and a contributing editor of the “Planned Giving” of CLE’s BC Estate Planning & Wealth Preservation publication.

Robert Brown, President, Catalyst Community Developments, Vancouver, BC. Mr. Brown brings over 35 years of diverse real estate and life experience including commercial real estate, market housing development, innovative green building projects, non-profit development work, and hands on work

with community-based organizations. He trained in Scotland as a Chartered Surveyor, starting in 1979. After participating in many aspects of real estate in the UK he came to Vancouver in 1988. After eight years in commercial real estate brokerage Robert created Chesterman Properties with the goal of undertaking market real estate developments that are thoughtful, beautiful and inspiring. Also, between 2001 and 2008 Robert (with a partner) operated reSource Rethinking Building, a green building consulting firm that assisted many large developments (and developers) to achieve significant improvements in building performance with a reduced impact on our environment. Since 2008, Robert has also brought his real estate expertise to work with a variety of not-for-profit organisations seeking to optimize their real estate assets to further their mission and create significant community benefit. It was this work that spawned the idea for Catalyst.

Malcolm Burrows, Head, Philanthropic Advisory Services, Scotia Wealth Management, Toronto, Ontario. With 26 years of charity experience, Mr. Burrows is a nationally-known philanthropic advisor who works with private clients. He is the founder of Aqueduct Foundation, a public foundation

with donor advised funds, which is operated by Scotia Wealth Management. He is an educator and public policy volunteer through the Canadian Association of Gift Planners and has served on CRA Charities Directorate’s technical issues working group. He is a director of The Muttart Foundation (Edmonton) and governance advisor to Medécins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) operational centre in Barcelona.

Liana Martin, Tsleil-Waututh First Nation Elected Council Member, North Vancouver, BC. Liana Martin is currently serving her eighth term as a member of the Tsleil-Waututh Elected Council. She is also currently a Board Member of the Tsleil-Waututh Community Society. She currently sits on the Land-Use

Planning Committee of the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation, and she formerly sat on the Comprehensive Community Planning Committee. Her current portfolio with the First Nation includes the Public Works Department.

Hayley Maschek, Associate, KPMG Law LLP. Hayley Maschek practises in affiliation with KPMG EnterpriseTM in Vancouver. In that capacity, Hayley’s practice focuses on working with charitable and not-for-profit clients, assisting with tax compliance and planning, including maintenance of tax-exempt

status and structuring planned gifts. Hayley also works with privately owned businesses, assisting clients with trust and estate planning and tax-efficient charitable gifting. Hayley is a practising member of the Law Society of British Columbia. She is also a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Canadian Bar Association.

Robert W. Pakrul, Partner, Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP. Robert Pakrul is a member of Alexander Holburn’s Corporate / Commercial Practice, with an emphasis on information and privacy, and governance. Mr. Pakrul has significant experience of over 30 years working with both large and small

non-profit organizations and foundations in their creation, governance, regulatory compliance and day-to-day operations. Mr. Pakrul participated in the working group of the Canadian Bar Association which analyzed and made submissions on society law reform in British Columbia over the past several years. Within the legal community, he has received a distinguished peer rating for high professional achievement from Martindale-Hubbell.

The non-profit legal regime in British Columbia is changing. As of November 28, 2016, the new BC Societies Act alters the ways non-profit are governed and regulated. In order to effectively meet the demands of this changing environment, directors and officers must stay on top of best governance practices and tools. This will have a significant impact on not only the success of the board, but on the success and survival of the organisation.
