Lakeshore Healing Garden has Personal Meaning For a Healthier Tomorrow www.cnehf.nl.ca Donor Newsletter Fall 2012 Charitable # 86168 3498 RR0001 or Joyce Howell, a retired healthcare worker of 30 years, the construction of the Lakeshore Healing Garden has personal meaning. During 2009 while Joyce’s husband F Baxter was a patient at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre, there were several occasions when a garden would have been a welcome relief from the day to day dealings of hospital life. “During Bax’s sickness we spent a lot of time in the hospital, close to 24-7. And all that time there was no chance to get away from the clinical setting. Just to let my mind relax and unwind would’ve been such a relief if only for a few minutes. We did visit the patient garden at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s and I remember thinking it would be a wonderful idea to have something like that in Gander. Unless you’ve been through what our family went through, then you may not know how important this garden will be. It is so vitally important not only for patients and their famlies, but also for healthcare staff that have to deal with traumatic situations on a daily basis.” The Lakeshore Healing Garden is a therapeutic patient garden currently under construction at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre with an approximate cost of $300,000. When completed the garden will feature a wheelchair accessible walking path, water fall, pond, tool shed, gazebos and several rest areas. “Bax passed away in 2010 and when I saw the construction taking place I was filled with joy to know that patients and visitors to this facility will be able to take advantage of the benefits of a healing garden. It’s something I wish had been here for our family.” To donate to the Lakeshore Healing Garden you can contact the Health Foundation at 256-5742 or by mail at P.O. Box 222 Gander, NL A1V 1W6 or email [email protected] or securely online at www.cnehf.nl.ca. You may also dedicate a tree in the garden if you wish. or the last two years Gander Kia has been supporting the creation of the Lakeshore Healing Garden. In 2011, through their Drive Change initiative they raised $3,300 locally and received another $3,000 through a national F

campaign. And to add to that total, once again this year, they donated $100 from every new and used vehicle sold along with selling tickets on an Apple Ipad 3. Recently they presented a check in the amount of $5,130 bringing their total for the healing garden to $11,430 surpassing their goal of $10,000!

The 12th Annual Golf for Health was held on Thursday, July 4th at the Gander Golf Club and records were set in both temps and net profits. It started with a beautiful day of sunshine and a record 29 degrees and it ended with a new record for our tournament of $39,500 in net proceeds. With a sold out tournament again this year, our participants enjoyed the day to the fullest. Thanks to our corporate sponsors, team sponsors, and supporters for the day.

Over $42,000 was raised in May during our annual Mother’s Day Radiothon on 650 VOCM. Monies raised through the Radiothon will be used to support the purchase of Palliative Care equipment for the region including a “Cuddle Bed”. Thanks to our Corporate Sponsors: Canadian Tire and Shoppers Drug Mart VOCM and VOCM Cares Foundation and to all our volunteers and supporters for your help. A special thanks also to Sueann Kean who so graciously shared her story with us.

It was all Cowboys and Cowgirls in attendance for the 6th Annual Health Foundations Regatta which was held on July 13th and 14th at the Lewisporte Yacht Club. The ‘Saltwater Cowboys’ themed event brought in over $36,500 in net proceeds for healthcare projects in our region. Congratulations to the winner of the Scotiabank Cup for the 5th year in a row, Dr. Jody Woolfrey and family of “Bailiwick” who raised $6,330. Thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, Scotiabank, along with all of our other sponsors, volunteers and supporters.

ediatric patients visiting James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre now have a safe, secure, and fun place to play all thanks to the Gander International Airport Authority. A recent generous donation by the group, in the amount of P

$14,000, allowed our Foundation to create a Pediatric Playroom on the General Surgery Unit at James Paton Memorial. This donation covered the cost of furnishings, decorative items, games, etc. needed to ensure a safe play environment while in care. Fred Moffitt, Chairperson of the Airport Authority stated, “Investing in youth and family wellness has been a focus for the Airport Authority. We are really pleased to be able to partner and support Central Health’s endeavor. Anyone who has had to visit the hospital with a child recognizes it can be difficult for them, so it’s wonderful to know this facility will provide a small oasis for kids. We are really impressed with the new Pediatric Playroom, the Health Foundation is to be commended for doing an excellent job.”The room which officially opened in June, was put together by many wonderful staff and volunteers who so graciously offered their talents to creating such a great space.

New Blanket Warmer for DI Patients s a Porter/ PCA at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre, Gerard Byrne knows about the care of the patients and clients that Ause this facility. When Gerard saw the increasing need for a

dedicated blanket w a r m e r i n t h e Diagnostic Imaging D e p a r t m e n t h e decided to approach the Foundation about purchasing one for that area . The department sees a lot of clients, especially elderly patients, from the cancer clinic, the e m e r g e n c y department, as well patients that are stressed undergoing MRI or CT scans. “Before I would have to travel all the way to the emergency department to retrieve a warm blanket to keep them comfortable. This new Blanket Warmer is a big addition to the Diagnostic Imaging Department and is well utilized. It's a little gesture but a big reward. The comfort that it provides patients is priceless.” Thanks to your donations and Gerard’s thoughtfulness, our DI patients will now enjoy the comfort of a warm blanket in their area.

Gail has been a member of the Board Of Directors since December 6, 2010. Originally from the community of Fogo Island, Gail and her husband Jim are owner operators of Tim Hortons in Gander. “You don't realize how much is done or where the equipment comes from. Or how much you take it for granted.” Gail considers the Lakeshore Healing Garden to be an important project that will benefit patients and visitors to the hospital.

“If you have a loved one in here for long term, say four months or longer, it is hard to continue to be optimistic in a clinical environment. As a visitor I've been in a situation where I've had to visit people over a long period of time and it would've been a great advantage in the healing process to have a garden to go to.” Gail also enjoys playing guitar, walking, Zumba, volunteering at the SPCA and St. Martin’s Church.
