Sugar My body fat percentage dropped significantly when I experimented with sugar. I found the biggest sources (processed foods, bread, and drinks) and cut them down and out where possible.

Bread The most significant weight/fat loss came when I switched to home made bread. I have a simple handmade recipe that takes no time at all to set in motion.

FitBit I was always fairly sceptical about fitness tracking devices, but took the plunge with an UP band. Then I was given a FitBit. I’ll be honest, I’ve

fallen in love with it. It has been instrumental in helping me build and track new habits. I track my exercise (including swimming), check on distances and steps, and keep an eye on my heart rate. It’s not a quick fix solution, it is a tool. There are studies that suggest wearables aren’t the answer to weight loss like they profess to be. But treat it as a tool and you can use it as a part of a fantastically healthy overall energy creating strategy.

VITAMIN B12 Vitamin B12 helps make DNA, nerve and blood cells, and is vital for a healthy brain and immune system. You can eat loads of veg and still be deficient in it.

A supplement can help you get enough.

THESE ARE ALL THINGS I USE (OR HAVE TRIED) AND FIND GREAT VALUE FROM. I'M NOT A PROFESSIONAL NUTRITIONIST AND AM ONLY RECOMMENDING IDEAS BASED ON MY OWN EXPERIENCES. LINKS WILL TAKE YOU TO AMAZON.

Bathroom Scales Common logic suggests that getting healthy is about losing weight. But it is not that simple. I got these scales that calculate weight, body fat, hydration, muscle and bone mass.

Body fat percentage is a lot more telling than overall weight and the key to overall health. I went from over 30% to 18% in just over 6 months by focussing on building and toning muscle instead of simply doing a lot of cardio. Scales like these ones can give a much more holistic sense of progress, rather than focussing on weight as many of us do.

SLEEP:RESTLumie Bodyclock If you’re someone who needs an alarm but has always hated being woken by the harsh and interrupting rudeness of audio clocks then this is exactly what you need.

The wake-up light gives a sunrise signal in the morning, helping those who struggle to get to sleep at night by setting the body’s natural rhythms earlier. It also has a dimming sunset that promotes production of melatonin to help you unwind naturally, ready for bed.

Air Ioniser and Purifier Improving your air quality is vital to sleeping better. Opening a window and circulating the air/delivering some more good ions is a good idea.

However if this is not always possible, like for us with a house cat that would be straight out an open window, then air ionisers can bring great value.

This one also removes allergens (dust, pet hair, mould spores, and pollens), eliminates unwanted odours, and freshen the air. This is ideal when you are unable to open windows (perhaps there is a lot of street noise).

Himalayan Salt Lamp Himalayan Crystal Salt Lamps are believed to create negatively charged ions in the air. I don’t know how true this is,

but I do know that my salt lamp creates a really relaxing

environment and helps me switch off in the evening before drifting off to sleep. It gives off an incredibly soothing light.

Running I recently treated myself to a nice paid of running shoes for the first time in my life. It was a reward for running 10km for the first time in my life, which was a goal I set myself in 2016. At the start of the year I could only run 2km - even that was a struggle. But by May, to my astonishment, I had unbelievably managed to run 10km.

I got my New Balance Vazee Pace shoes towards the end of the year and I was blown away by how light they are. I had never appreciated how much difference a shoe can make to the enjoyment and endurance ability in exercise.

Blue-Light Blocking Glasses If you struggle to sleep then it is definitely worth trying some blue light blocking glasses. Artificial light can have a detrimental impact on our ability to sleep properly because it blocks the creation of necessary night time hormones, and stimulates the production of daytime hormones.

F.lux App This app makes the colour of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. It removes blue light which can cause suppression of melatonin, which can lead to sleep problems. The ideal thing is to turn off tech a few hours before bed, but I know for sure that this is not always possible.

The App is Free
