In the Middle Ages, individuals were identified by their Coat of Arms. As they were used on the battlefield to identify a person’s friends and foes, they were often in the shape of a shield. The symbols used on coats of arms were chosen carefully to represent an individual or an entire family. The study of the symbols, colors and patterns used in Coats of Arms is known as heraldry.

Knights Wanted

You are a lord or a lady living in the Middle Ages in England, unfortunately many

of your knights were killed in the last battle. As a result, you are in desperate need of more knights….

Being the creative and intelligent lord or lady that you are, you decide to create a

poster advertising for knights.

Becoming a knight was a great honor. Only boys could become knights, and most came from families of nobility. Knights believed in the code of chivalry,

which means they promised to defend the weak, be courteous to all women, be loyal to their kings, and serve God at all times.

Your poster must

List the training required for a knight keeping in mind the process a boy went through to become a squire and then a knight

List the requirements of a knight—what equipment would he need to bring with him? What experience should he have?

List what the knight will receive in return for his services Be as realistic as possible for the time period Be spellchecked and edited for grammar
