What is a project?
It is a unique process, consisting of a set of coordinated and controlled activities with start and finish dates, undertaken to achieve an objective conforming to specific requirements including constraints of time, cost and resources. In other words, project is a complex, non routine, one-time effort to complete a particular task.

Project Life Cycle
Project life cycle recognizes that projects have limited life spans and that there are predictable changes in the level of effort and focus over the life of a project. Although every project is unique, most of them go through these four phases: defining, planning, executing and delivering.

Unique functions of project managers
Project mangers are expected to marshal resources to complete a defined project on time, on budget, and within specifications.
Project managers are the direct link to the customers and must fulfil the customer’s expectations while staying within the project specifications.
Project managers direct, coordinate and integrate the project team .
Project managers are responsible for the performance of the team members. They must ensure that appropriate trade offs between the time, cost and specifications

The following have been found to be the characteristics of a workaholic project manager
• Every Friday he thinks that there are only two more working days until Monday.
• At five p.m. he considers the working day only half over
• He has no time to rest or relax• He always takes homework from the office• He takes work with him on vacations

Project Management – as a whole
Every project is a system in that it consists of many interrelated and interconnected parts or elements, which must function as a whole. Project varies greatly in size, complexity and urgency; however all but a simplest project have a common element in that they must be integrated.
