New Year!

Chapel Street

Community Garden

December 2014

Many of us have been experiencing frustration as slaters help

themselves to our carefully nurtured seedlings and young

plants. Here are a few suggestions we have received to help

deal with them:

Slaters enjoy dark, damp spaces, so keep mulch and dead leaves away from the

base of your young plants. Older plants have tougher stems which are less

appealing to slaters.

Try leaving hollowed out citrus halves around you patch—these attract slaters

which can then be removed.

Make a spray of 1 litre water, ½ teaspoon pure eucalyptus oil and a teaspoon of

dishwashing liquid. Spray the ground around your precious plants, but try not to

get it on the foliage as it will burn.

Use coffee grounds around the base of new seedlings to deter slaters.

Try a yoghurt or sour cream trap as follows: Place 2-3 tablespoons of yoghurt in

a container. Mix with boiling water and stir well. Place in the ground near

seedlings and make a ramp of soil up to the edges. Slaters should be attracted

and fall in, then can be removed!

Good Luck!

What a great day we had in October as we celebrated the completion of several major projects in the garden! The

weather was perfect and our facilities were enjoyed by members of the garden, church friends, dignitaries and the

public. Thanks to all who made the day such a success.

Michael and Sue did a fantastic job producing delicious pizzas

from our new pizza oven to feed the crowds. Thanks, to, to all

who made cakes to share, and to Bill

for organising the tea and coffee.

We received encouragement and praise

for our achievements from Mayor of

Burnside, David Parkin, Local Member,

Vincent Tarzia, and representatives of

the Burnside and Magill Sunrise Rotary

Clubs, who generously funded the

purchase of materials for the pizza oven

and pergola. The hard work of the

Carey Training job seekers in constructing these facilities was also acknowledged. Our rain and aqua gardens were

much admired, along with our new rainwater tank and the scarecrow built by the children from Magill Primary

School. We also thank our friends from Uniting Communities who continue to provide artwork for the garden. Their

latest project was a mosaic bird bath, and in the New Year they will be decorating the pizza oven with more mosaic

designs.

We’ve achieved a lot since the garden first opened in May 2012. We have a great community growing together in a

flourishing garden. We look forward to another successful year working together to grow vegetables and friendships

in 2015!

Health and Safety Matters in the Garden

We now have some great new facilities that will enhance our community life, yet they are potentially

dangerous if not used with care. We also need to ensure that they are used in an equitable manner.

Some guidelines

Fire Ban Days: Neither the BBQ nor the Pizza oven are to be used on Fire Ban Days

Barbecue: (1) Visually inspect hoses and cylinder before use

(2) Do not use water on grease fires - use the fire extinguisher stored in the shed

(3) Only people trained in the use of the BBQ are to operate it

(4) Please leave the area and utensils clean and tidy

Pizza Oven: (1) Ensure a 4m clearance from combustible materials

(2) Wear gloves when handling wood

(3) Wear thermal gloves when handling hot trays

(4) Have a hose connected to a nearby tap whenever the pizza oven is in operation

(5) Please help to keep up the supply of suitable wood

Food Preparation Standards: Food handling standards will feature in the next newsletter. They include

cleanliness for hands and surfaces, and careful food management - namely hot food is really hot, cold food is

kept cold and raw food is kept separate from cooked food.

Come and join us for the first working bee of the new year, when there

are sure to be lots of routine tidying and maintenance jobs to be done,

as well as fresh fruit from our trees and vines to enjoy!

We also have plans to work further on the area around the rain garden

and the compost bins, to make this are more pleasing to the eye, and we

also plan to install some paving in front of the shed door, in the hope of

reducing the amount of dirt and leaves that get into the shed.

Bring along your tools, working gloves, hats, sunscreen and water bottles

and come and share in the fun!

Cake:

2 cups flour

2 teaspoons 2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

3 eggs

2 cups sugar

1 cup vegetable oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

2 cups grated un-peeled zucchini

(place in a sieve and press out excess moisture before measuring)

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Frosting:

85g cream cheese, softened to room

60g butter, room temperature

1 1/2 to 2 cups of powdered sugar

Method

1 Preheat oven to 180°F. Butter a 20 X 30cm baking pan.

2 In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, and baking powder. Set aside.

3 In a mixer, beat the 3 eggs on high speed until frothy. Lower the speed and beat in the sugar, vegetable oil, vanilla,

and lemon zest. Stir in the flour mixture, a third at a time. Stir in the zucchini and chopped nuts.

4 Pour mixture into the baking pan. Bake at 180°C for 40 to 45 minutes Remove from oven and let cool completely

before frosting.

The Chapel Street Community Garden has been

established for just over two years. In that time a

strong community has grown together. The varied

group of people are from the Burnside Council area

although visitors to the garden have come from

across the city.

The garden community are drawn together by a

mutual interest in gardening, healthy lifestyle and

community building. The impetus for The Chapel

Street Community came from Morialta Uniting Church

and in particular Morialta Community Centre which is

an initiative of the church. The garden would not have

been possible without a sizable gift of money, from

the Burnside Council.

Most of the Garden infrastructure has been the work

Burnside Council staff. The garden is now an

Incorporated body run by its Management Committee,

which meets monthly and has its AGM every

September.

Don’t forget your membership card

entitles you to 10% discount at Hines

Garden Centre on The Parade.

We now have a form available for

members to register interest in moving

to a different plot, if available.

Remember we are an ORGANIC

garden!

Garden contact arrangements over Christmas.

The Community Centre will be closed from

19th December 2014 until January 19th 2015. The

Centre’s 8331 9344 Phone Number will not be

answered and no one will check recorded messages.
