Brethren, My initiation was a fundamentally spiritual experience. I think I can say that without revealing any of the secrets of the ceremony. I suspect that, for many of you, the same could be said. Furthermore, every time I sit in an initiation I am reminded of the profundity of my experience.

I say this not because the experience is unique to me, but rather that the experience is something that, in my opinion, links us as Masons. We come from all walks of life, we have different jobs and different religious values (though, granted, we all share a common belief in a Supreme Being, how we perceive that Being var-ies among us). But the initiatory experience binds us at a spiritual level. What I would like to suggest is that even after we are initiated sharing the initiation of a candidate brings back those personal experiences and helps to strengthen the spiritual bond between us as Masons. So I would like to encourage all the brethren to come out to our next initiation, passing or raising not only because it supports our candidates but because it strengthens the ties that bind us together. News on the Square

From the West,

Discussion of Stated Meeting Dinner Budget and Costs. YTD the costs of the Stated Meeting Dinners have greatly exceeded the income. Over the years, almost every year, the budget for the Stated Meeting Dinners has been significantly over spent. One of the reasons for the over expenditure was the Lodge and chefs did not know how much food to purchase and how many dinners to prepare.

This year we are trying to balance the dinner budget via a reservation system which should have resulted in meal costs approximating income; unfortunately, the reservation system has not been accomplishing this goal. The costs of the meals have greatly exceeded the income. January net loss was $209, February net loss $461 and March net income of $75. In those 3 months, the Lodge has paid almost $700 more than it has taken in for the dinners. If this trend continues the FY budget deficit could be $2,000. A big hit to our very tight overall budget. What are the reasons for this short fall in income? One factor is reservations made, dinners ordered, and the person(s) do not come to the dinner. Thus the Lodge has to pay for the ordered dinners without receiving any income. Another factor may be the number of compted meals. Just a reminder, for applicants and po-tential applicants the first dinner visit is free, after that they have to pay like everyone else. There are three proposals to be presented to the lodge: Making a reservation is a commitment to pay for the dinner. No shows will be charged. 1) There can be emergency exceptions. 2) Non-reservations be charged $20 per meal. There can be exceptions for visitors from afar. 3) With advanced payment, reservation can be made for the entire year.

Brethren this year has started off at a outstanding pace full of degrees and proficien-cies, I see a lot of first degrees coming up and third degrees let us be ready to keep moving our brothers along through masonry. Your participation in practices and de-grees are paramount. When all the officers are in sync and working together it makes for a awesome experience for the candidate.

Guidepost For the Journey

Recently I was going through some old reading material and came across an article by RW David Perry (now MW). In it he wrote: “In history and even today in some countries you could be arrested and impris-oned for being a Mason. The ironic and very telling question is "would there be enough evidence to convict you". Also in the article was “Building with Living Stones”: • Treat people with respect. Treat others the way you wish to be treated. • Listen with your eyes when talking with some one, look at them, shows that you are really listening. • Make them feel important, needed and accepted. • Don’t believe everything you hear. • If you are repeating what you heard from others, you are gossiping. (ask TAG about Socrates’ Rules). • Look for the best in others, not just what you see are wrongs. • Find ways to encourage people around you on a regular basis. • Honor People. • Be patient, kind, and keep no record of wrongs. • Work daily to help others succeed. • When in doubt, see rule 1. My interpretation of what he meant and the question we should always be measuring our actions by, is, are we Masons because we pay dues and are on the rolls, or do we actively apply the lessons we are taught, the Masonic Principals, to our everyday life. Is our conduct, regardless of the circumstances, that of a Just and Upright Mason ? Gary Adkinson

Meet our newest Entered Apprentice Mario Aspacio.

Mario was initiated on March 31st. Brother Ryan Phillips, sitting as Master, conferred the degree, Wor. Kirt Wilson was Sr. Deacon. Brother Gary Woodine of Simi Valley Lodge No. 806 delivered the lecture and Brother Gary Adkinson gave the charge. Brother Michael Robertson introduced Brother Mario to the Lodge with the walkaround. Wor. Michael Blodgett personally welcomed Bro. Mario to the Lodge. Brother Mario served in the United States Navy and is now in the Navy Reserve: MOS Yeoman. He is em-ployed as an office manager at Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division at Point Mugu, CA. He is not married and lives in Oxnard. “My current goals as a Mason are mainly focused in growth. I hope that my brothers would help guide me to where I need to be. I would like to one day be a mentor to someone and watch them grow within the brother-hood as others will watch and help me grow.”

Masonry in California

Masonry has been an integral part of California for more than 150 years. During the Gold Rush of 1849, thousands of settlers came to California in search of fortune. Many of these men were Masons and brought with them Masonic values and traditions. Not surprisingly, some of California’s first Masonic lodges were established in the mining towns of the Gold Country. In 1850 - the same year that California became a state - the Grand Lodge of California was established in Sacramento.

Within 10 years, the number of Masonic lodges in the new state had grown from 11 to 130, while member-ship soared from 258 to more than 5,000. Over the years, the Masons have played a key role in shaping the history of California. To date, 19 California governors have been Masons, and at least four California Masons have been elected to the U.S. Senate. Today there are more than 50,000 members and about 330 lodges, mak-ing the Grand Lodge of California one of the largest in the world.

Masonry in Ventura

In 1870 it took a long time to go along the coast of California from the mission town of San Buenaventura, to the other mission town of Santa Barbara. The best way to travel then was by horse and buggy but the road was a rough and rugged one. When the causeway was later built along the Rincon highway, travelers could pass only at low tide. Journeys had to be timed according to the tide, and it took at least six hours to make the trip one way. We can almost hear the conversation on that long road, coming home from the Lodge at Santa Barbara Satur-day night on the full moon, when Lemuel C. McKeeby said to Brice Grimes and Henry Spear: "Why don't we have a Masonic Lodge in San Buenaventura?" They heartily agreed, and the rest of the ride really seemed short because of the plans they were formulating. This was, perhaps, the very first thing which occurred in the history of San Buenaventura Lodge, No. 214, Free and Accepted Masons of the State of California. Bethel No. 89 Job’s Daughters International

I would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets to our 1st Annual Spaghetti Dinner. We sold roughly

90 tickets and the sale of our $1 raffle tickets also brought in some money. Mr. & Mrs. Jedidiah Smith made

the Spaghetti and garlic rolls. Each of the Daughters made something for the bake sale; we had lots of cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and tiramisu! They also brought a total of 16 baskets for the Raffle. The Daughters

worked very hard at seating and serving the dinner guests utilizing a lot of the skills they have learned from

serving you gentlemen!

The decor was put together by our Guide, Sarah, and our Marshall, Molly, with help from our Promoter of

Sociability, Mrs. Brown. It consisted of red and white checkered table cloths on top of white linens, with jars

that had grapevines in them and lighted umbrellas. The backdrop, inspired by Da Vinci's Starry Night, was

painted by Mrs. Brown.

We hope to see more smiling faces at our 2nd Annual Spaghetti dinner 2017!!
