Page 1: Changes to Flat Plans

This is a flatplan design of my magazine front cover. In this design I have changed the font of the masthead from Hawaiian Punk to Kremlin, the reason being I believe that the new font is clearer and less busy and it slots in better with a grid format. However I haven’t developed the masthead too much seeing as this is just a basic design; the details can be added in later on. The barcode is located at the top right of the page just under the masthead, alongside the slogo and the price. The date is located on the same level but on the left side of the page instead. There are several cover lines on the page, and the main one has been highlighted in reversed out style in order to make it stand out. The main image is pretty basic and standard and relies on the looks of the model, but I feel this brings more attention to the cover lines which will encourage purchase. Also the simplicity of the magazine helps allow flexibility in terms of how my final photo will come out.

In this modification of the previous flat plan, I have rotated the lead cover line so it is horizontal and the pull quote has been rotated accordingly. The slogo has been warped so it follows the shape of the models shadow and the price and date has been similarly warped. I find this to be an interesting concept for this image, however difficulties would be encountered in trying to keep this featured throughout subsequent issues and a house style is unlikely to be found. The barcode has been positioned at the bottom right hand corner, reduced in size and rotated by 90 degrees, and I did this because I didn’t feel the barcode should be such an important part of the front cover as it was previously.

In the left hand side version of the flat plan I have made the masthead into two lines, and this has allowed space for the barcode to slot into the top right hand corner. The price and date are now positioned just below the barcode and I feel this makes it easier for the reader to quickly view this information. The slogo isn’t present in either versions but could easily slot just below the masthead. Several quotes related to the main article are warped and shaped around the figure of the model, and I feel this brings a more

artistic feel to the cover; a bit more unconventional and different and with the right photo the end results could be stunning. It could also look good either with or without cover lines, depending on how much information is given off by the image itself. However if this artistic feel was to become the house style then it would need a strong, original image for every issue, which could become an issue later on down the line. Also the presence of things such as barcodes and pricing may detract from the artistic feel. Nevertheless it could be used effectively in a double paged spread or as a one off magazine cover, if a consistent style cannot be found. The main positive is that if there is a strong image then it helps make it stand out and less work is needed on things such as cover lines.
