“When I came here, I felt safe. Right away, I knew I could do something better with my life.”

– Jill, former resident

Calvary Women’s Services offers housing, health, education and employment programs that empower homeless women in Washington, DC to change their lives.

Our programs carry out our mission to achieve excellence in what we offer: a safe, caring place for tonight; support, hope and change for tomorrow.

At Calvary, we believe every woman has the strengths and gifts she needs to be successful. Each woman in our programs identifies and builds on her strengths, meeting her goals for safe housing, good health and financial independence.

Empowered women changing their lives.

Starting a NewLena began using drugs as a young adult and her habits spiraled out of control after she got married. When her husband was incarcerated, Lena lost her marriage, her job and her home. After losing almost everything, she knew she had to make a change. She registered for a sobriety program at a local treatment center and completed the 30-day program. A counselor recom-mended she come to Calvary Women’s Services to build on that success.

At Calvary, Lena took important steps toward her goals. With the support of Calvary’s staff, she enrolled in lit-eracy classes and learned how to manage her dyslexia.

She worked closely with a therapist at Calvary to man-age her anxiety, and she attended Life Skills, Education and Arts Program (LEAP) classes. These activities gave her the practical skills she needed to achieve and sus-tain independent living.

Lena celebrated her first full year of sobriety while at Calvary. She said, “Sobriety is the first thing I did for me. My case manager kept me on track, and I have a good sponsor and a solid network of friends and family who support me.”

One year after coming to Calvary, Lena graduated from Calvary’s transitional housing program and moved into her own home. She continues to improve her reading skills and is working as a home care aide.

“I’m taking care of myself in my own place and I’m so grateful to Calvary,” she said. “I learned how to love myself there.”
