Be Not Afraid Change at times is most welcome- like that first wafting wind carrying springtime's warmth. Change at other times is as welcome as having a root canal! Change just is. It’s everywhere all the time. Sometimes its face is positive and uplifting and then it appears in a different form that can be unwelcomed and unnerving. All change is disruptive in some way to some extent affecting different groups and individuals in widely varied ways. Change is at the root and core of all our lives. We do have a capacity to transform how change affects us. Reactive approaches to change almost always set into motion unexpected and unintended consequences that usually divide us and leave us wondering about the intentions and motives of others. Responsive approaches to change have a very different effect. Responsiveness is a deep spiritual gift. We can all nurture an inner space allowing us time to pause, reflect, search for ways to be responsive, responsible, creative, and loving
in a way reflecting our truest self that God is hoping we will present to others and life. The spiritual practice of praying and meditating on our inner capacity to be the peace we want to see in the world can put us all in sync with this inner grace of pausing to be still. This allows God’s presence and wisdom to guide our feet and shape our responses. I am here as your interim pastor for a period of time that is something like this deep spiritual spaciousness and openness empowering us to be flexible and adaptable as we reflect on the meaning of us gathering as the church. In fresh ways we’ll be examining our shared calling as people of faith proclaiming in action that there is joy at the core of what makes us alive. We will be exploring what is just peace rooted in faith. Let’s walk this path together and see where this takes us as Christ’s hope springs eternal within us! We will be creating space for Christ to work wonders we can’t imagine in advance. Next step…then another, together. Pastor Curt

Curt Scott In 2015, Rev. Cameron Trimble warned the Michigan Conference UCC of the looming demise of this denomination and Mainline Protestantism. Picking a cause was the solution. It was suggested that we, as churches, oppose human trafficking, child soldiers, and/or become Open and Affirming. Three years later, in our sanctuary, we learned that the UCC found its cause: “toxic, cisgendered, heteronormative, ableist, patriarchal masculinity,” embedded in law, family, village and world. Rev. Dr. Alice Hunt, former president of Chicago Theological Seminary and 2018 keynote speaker, affixed this massive label as she defined, in real terms, the extent of white, male privilege. Sighting a study from the University of Southern California she demonstrated that, as privilege increases, compassion and empathy decrease. Hunt declared, “Privilege dehumanizes everyone. It disconnects the privileged from the others. It is toxic to the non-privileged. It is intoxicating to the privileged.” Laws have for centuries ensured the vast majority of marbles begin and remain in the pockets of wealthy white men, `tis true -- all of them endorsed by dominant religion back to the Bronze Age. 400 years of American governance of every kind has been driven by rules that enrich the lives and increased the wealth of white men, while withholding wealth, dignity and too often life itself from women, aboriginal peoples, people of color and the disabled. (See Bacon’s Rebellion) I am immensely proud of our church as host, but more so as local source of human decency. Anti-bigot, pro-love and pro-thinking is how I describe us. We pulled off that event beautifully and gracefully because we are who we are. However, we should not let this denomination slide because it’s our religion any more than letting a man slide because he’s a man.

Staff and Leaders of the Church 2018
Despite the fact that Jesus taught other-wise, Christianity has a 1900-year history of seeking and labeling others to compare to in order to declare who is righteous, starting with Jews. Conversely, the living, breathing Jesus demonstrated that the only other is Empire, pyramid-think, because it crushes people who think as God taught, people like him. Grace has always been bludgeoned by Ignorance, bigotry, hate and white, male privilege. But these are mere ideas. The souls behind them, every single one, belong to those neighbors Jesus talked about. Our job is to fill such hearts of darkness with the love Jesus taught us, even if it kills us, not label them, smile and keep walking. Peace CJS Be The Church

Sunday School Volunteers Needed!
The Christian Education Board is asking for volunteers to teach our children on Sunday's. We will keep the same plan as we’ve had this whole year.
You can choose to do any kind of lesson you want. Examples are: reading a book or bible storybook, doing a craft or activi-ty, coloring a paper, doing an activity sheet or playing a game.
Consider teaming up with a friend and teach together!
Supplies will be stored on the wooden tables in the middle classroom upstairs.
If you would like ideas or materials, please contact Judy Johnson 543-7768, Amy Slot 543-5927, Katherine Johnson 543-7932 or Diane Hudson 543-3135.
On September 23, 2018 the Church Mem-bership voted to pass the new By-Laws. This was a great move in the right direction of our Congregation. Now the next months will be spent in how do we develop the new structure of the “Church Council”. This new structure will bring on new lead-ership and a team approach to how we meet the challenge of the needs in our church. Terry Davis, Bill Anderson and Kathie Cook will be working with Pastor Curt and the Boards and Committees to move into a tried and tested approach to how we work in the Church. This council model is used in many church’s today. We follow in their footsteps to organize and further develop First Congregational Charlotte’s Church Council. Started in October we will be working through November, December and up until the Annual Meeting on January 20, 2019. We will meet this challenge and be ready for the needs of the Church in 2019. Join in the discussion and planning! Be a part of the Change for our Future.

Amazing Grace Sunday, November 4th at 6:00 PM (note the earlier time)
Church Sanctuary
Amazing Grace is the inspiring historical drama of how one man’s passion and perse-verance changed the world. Based on the true story of William Wilberforce, Amazing Grace follows his courageous quest to end the British slave trade. Along the way, Wilberforce meets intense opposition from members of Parliament.
With few allies such as his mentor, John Newton, a reformed slave ship captain who penned the great hymn, "Amazing Grace," the Prime Minister William Pitt, and Olaudah Equiano, the erudite former slave turned author, Wilberforce fruitlessly fights both public indifference and moneyed opposition determined to keep their exploitation safe. Nevertheless, Wilberforce finds the inspira-tion in newfound love with Barbara Spooner, a beautiful woman with progressive views, to rejuvenate the fight with new ideas that would lead to a great victory for social justice.
This film was nominated for numerous awards and made its North American premiere as the closing-night gala attraction at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival.
Join us for this inspiring and dramatic story. The discussion afterward will be led by Don Walker, retired (and much-loved) Professor of History from Olivet College (and huge Chicago Cubs fan!).

Music Notes Ramona Kime, Director of Music
We’re coming up to a busy time in the church year, and this year is no excep-tion. Our Celestial Bell Choir and Senior Choir both have outreach performances, making mu-sic beyond our walls and sharing our love of mu-sic with the community. The Celestial Bells have been asked to be the featured “entertainment” for the annual Siren Tea, to be held at St. Mary’s, on Sunday, November 11. They will be representing our church with a beautiful performance of five of their favorite bell pieces. The Senior Choir will be performing as part of the massed choir for the Ecumenical Thanksgiv-ing Service at Peace Lutheran. The service will be held on Sunday, November 18th at 7 PM. We will also be performing our own individual choir piece, as will the choir from Peace Lutheran. Also: Save the Date: The Senior Choir has been asked again this year to perform on the Community Band’s Holiday Concert. It will be held at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center (CPAC) on Saturday, December 8th at 7 PM. And last but not least, I want to publicly thank Bob Miller for paying for three new music stands. Our old ones were wobbly beyond repair and scratched up, so it’s wonderful to have new music stands that don’t wobble! Connie’s support and love of music lives on through Bob’s generosity.
ANNE DODDS September 30, 2018 walked one mile at
the Autumn classic for
Special Olympics!
Anne raised $3006.00 . So very proud of our Anne Dodds for her support of Special Olympics!!!!!

We are hard at work learning 5 new pieces to present that day. SIREN TEA is presented by the GFWC of Charlotte. This is a massive project that raises funds to support the Siren Shelter here in Charlotte. Not only are we Ringing, we decided to “buy” two tables to decorate.
Amy Krizek is our champion for this project!!!
November Notes and News
Celestial Bells News Judi Cates, Director
This Fall Celestial Bells have had to adjust to changes in our members. Rachel Harvitt and Neola Rendel are on a “leave of absence” until the first of the year due to hip replacement surgery! Yikes, both about the same time in October. The choir wishes them a speedy recovery and a return when they are ready. Solution 1 Enlist Sharon Oatman to play the “tiny bells” . Sharon has had previous experience in ringing, but this is a new position on the scale to learn! We welcomed Sharon in September and we are so happy that she is there to work with us! Solution 2 Move rehearsal to 5:30 pm to accommodate new changes for ringers. Solution 3 Move Dale Dodds to Neola’s position in the treble clef scale, from the very lowest bass bells. Thank you Dale for your willingness to once more learn a new position in bells! Celestial Bells were asked to play as Special Music for the SIREN TEA on November 11th for their annual fund raiser.

We will have a potluck supper at 6:00, featuring an entrée from the highlighted country. Please bring a dish to pass. If you like a culinary challenge, find a recipe for a dish from the highlighted country! The presentation will begin at 7:00 in the sanctuary, with plenty of time to ask questions.
