A sustainable future for industry and societyThe GFG Alliance is an international group of companies that work for tomorrow’s generations as much as for today’s. On a planet of limited resources, rising population and cycles of prosperity and recession, we place great emphasis on making our enterprises both resilient and sustainable.
For more than 60 years we’ve operated in sectors that are fundamental to the economy: energy, metals, engineering, logistics, and more recently infrastructure, financial services, property and mining. We’ve always sought to add value to these industries by doing things differently, and that remains the prevailing spirit of our companies today.
At the heart of the GFG Alliance approach is our focus on integrating and innovating to deliver value throughout the process; from the renewable energy that recycles metal in our furnaces and mills, and the precision engineering in our manufacturing plants, to the industry-friendly financial services that enable trade and invigorate the whole business environment in which we operate.
With a range of physical assets and human resources spanning over 30 countries and over 200 sites, our business is constantly growing and evolving in pursuit of our corporate vision. Our ability to deliver that vision is defined not only by the size of our operation, but by the quality of our people. We recruit the best, safeguard people and skills, and then invest to ensure they continue to grow as we do.
We have an industrial heritage that stretches back many decades but more importantly, we have an inspiring vision that delivers a smarter, more sustainable and viable future for both industry and society. It is a vision that will ensure we continue to push the boundaries and deliver for many decades to come.

GREENSTEEL
Liberty House Group, part of the GFG Alliance, is on a path to transform steel and steel-related manufacturing into a global technology and product leader through its GREENSTEEL strategy.
GREENSTEEL aims to recycle and upcycle the growing mountain of scrap steel, using electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy. Raw materials and resources would be secured locally to make world-class products that sell both nationally and globally. High grade engineered steel and alloys from the process feed engineering operations that make advanced components for demanding sectors such as automotive, aerospace, marine, off-road and defence.
GREENSTEEL provides a more flexible and customer focused solution while also reducing carbon footprint
of manufacture, shortening the supply chain, retaining and upgrading skills, stimulating new technologies and engendering a sustainable and globally competitive metal manufacturing sector.
The GFG Alliance has also recently extended its GREENSTEEL approach to other metals. In December 2016 it acquired the only primary aluminium smelter in the UK and is currently using its principles to reinvigorate aluminium manufacturing, turning its vision into a wider GREENMETAL strategy through GREENALUMINIUM.
18 19
Steel
The GFG Alliance has an integrated steel offering – ranging from liquid steel made from recycled and raw materials through to high-value precision engineered products and associated services, sold around the world.
Liberty Steel and Liberty OneSteel are the Alliance’s steel manufacturing arms. Their comprehensive product range includes slabs, ingots, billets, blooms, structurals, merchant bar, rail, rail sleepers, de-bar, wire rod, engineering bar, HRC, plate as well as pipe and tube, ranging from precision tube to structural hollow sections to large diameter energy (API) pipe. These are manufactured in a variety of grades and finishes to comply with national and international quality-certified standards and meet stringent customer specifications.
Located across the UK, Australia, Europe, India, China, and the USA, the division’s furnaces, mills, service centres and distribution sites serve demanding sectors such as automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, ship building, construction, on and off-shore power generation, yellow goods, pipeline, mining, machinery, highways and materials handling.

Mining
SIMEC’s South Australian Mining operations have a current run rate of approximately 10 million tonnes per year and are well-placed for an exciting future.
The mining business primarily operates in the Middleback Ranges, located 60 kilometres from Liberty’s integrated Whyalla Steelworks. These operations incorporate the Iron Baron, Iron Knob and South Middleback Ranges mine sites. They mine both hematite and magnetite iron ore which is respectively railed and piped to Whyalla. The majority of the magnetite is pelletised (c.1.3mtpa) and used within the steel works. The hematite ore (c.10mtpa) and
excess magnetite is loaded onto ships for transport to a primarily Asian customer base. Total reserves and resources are just under half a billion tonnes.
The Alliance also owns a portfolio of non-ferrous mining assets located in South Australia. This includes the Ardrossan Dolomite Mine – which supplies dolomite flux to Liberty’s Whyalla Steelworks – as well as a collection of copper-gold exploration projects.

Aluminium
GFG Alliance has a growth strategy in aluminium as a core product in its portfolio and sees an opportunity in re-growing supply chains for the benefit of customers and communities.
GFG Alliance’s vision for the reestablishing metals manufacturing recently led to the rebirth of the iconic British Aluminium brand. In December 2016, with the help of the Scottish Government, the Alliance purchased the last primary aluminium smelter in the United Kingdom, located in Fort William. The facility currently manufactures 48,000 tonnes of slabs and sows every year.
The smelter is powered by two neighbouring hydroelectric stations and a complex of bio fuel units, owned and managed by the GFG Alliance energy
company, SIMEC. This combination of renewable energy resources makes the site one of the greenest metal production plants in the world.
In addition to serving international markets with semi-finished aluminium, Liberty is investing to upgrade the smelter and add value through the creation of downstream manufacturing based on the liquid aluminium produced on site. This includes the creation of an adjacent facility to make alloy wheels and other components for the UK and European automotive industry.
Greener aluminium for growing industries
26 27
SIMEC Energy is a fast growing producer of renewable power.
Renewable power is at the heart of SIMEC’s activities as it looks to ensure a long term, stable and sustainable power source for industry. SIMEC Energy, part of the multi-national SIMEC Group, is developing a wide portfolio of renewable assets in the UK and beyond.
The Group already delivers low-carbon energy from hydro and bio fuel sources for use in GFG Alliance’s own industrial activities and in the wider market.
The Alliance will continue to drive the development of other green power sources and aims to create
additional generation capacity using technologies such as waste to energy, pumped hydro, solar and wind.
Looking further into the future, GFG has invested in the development of tidal lagoon power, which will harness the energy of the tides in a programme that could deliver 8% of the UK’s electricity needs. GFG Alliance also has capabilities for the manufacture of wind turbine pylons and is looking to expand its renewable energy portfolio with the addition of on and off- shore wind power assets.

The GFG Alliance’s model involves reshaping the metals recycling supply-chain to provide abundant high-quality raw materials for its manufacturing processes.
GFG Alliance’s recycling business holds a well-established position in its chosen markets supplying steel making raw materials to domestic and international mills through a collaborative partnership model between suppliers and consumers. Handling over 3 million tonnes a year of ferrous material the recycling business is a significant contributor to the raw material requirements of the steel industry and provides a sustainable alternative to landfill capturing the full value in use of the materials recycled.
The business’ experience in international non-ferrous trading and marketing, key relationships with consumers and close proximity to as well as local market knowledge are key assets of the non-ferrous recycling business.
The diverse geographical spread of global offices are staffed by a, multi-national and multi-cultural team
of trading and administrative support professionals providing a unique offering to our suppliers and customers alike.
Expanding on the well-established Australasian footprint and knowledge base, the Alliance is developing its network of suppliers as well as advanced collection and processing facilities for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals across the UK, USA and continental Europe. We will use locally sourced ferrous scrap metal to supply Liberty Steels’ electric arc furnaces and steel mills with feedstock to manufacture and distribute new steel products through our downstream businesses and supply-chain expertise. The sustainability of this fully integrated GREENSTEEL approach will be further enhanced in the future by use and investments in renewable energy.

Commercial ports, railway stock and marine fleets as well as storage facilities provide the Alliance with the ability to extend services to customers and support the delivery of its own value-added activities.
The GFG Alliance companies own and manage the Whyalla port in South Australia, and three ports in the UK, two on the River Usk in South Wales and a facility in Blyth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The Whyalla port services SIMEC’s iron ore mines and Liberty’s steel facilities in South Australia. The facility caters for inbound raw materials, storage and blending of iron ore for export, and the loading of transhipping vessels with export iron ore. Significant upgrades completed in 2013 saw the installation of state-of-the-art equipment – including a new high-capacity ship-loader and negative pressure storage sheds – enabling the mining business’ export capacity to more than
double to ~13mtpa. The facility has also garnered interest for its potential to cater for third-party access.
The UK ports are equipped with specialist heavy duty gantry cranes for handling steel and other products and can achieve a high output performance, crucial to their ability in being able to turn vessels round quickly.
