SUPPLEMENTS FOR HEART HEALTH 12 Saint Paul Drive, Ste 105 Chambersburg, PA 17201 (717) 217-6790 www.NorlandRx.com “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” - Ephesians 2:10 FEBRUARY 2018 Heart disease is the leading cause of death in adults in the United States, surpassing death from all other forms of can- cer, respiratory disease, stroke, and accidents. While most adults are terrified of succumbing to Alzheimer’s, heart disease took almost 300,000 lives in the US in 2016, while only 43,000 died from Alzheimer’s. So, what can you do to lessen the chances of dying from heart disease? A multi-prong approach is actually the best approach for reducing heart disease mortality risk— controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels (and dia- betes if you have it), maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, refraining from excessive alcohol use, and not smoking. While it’s sometimes impossible to over- come genetics, controlling many of these factors is largely a lifestyle issue, so it’s safe to say that a lot of heart disease is preventable. Looking at these factors, there are a lot of sup- plements that can positively impact heart health. Multivitamins: If you’ve had a comprehensive blood panel run anytime recently, it likely measured levels of a protein called hs-CRP or high sensitivity C-reactive protein. Made by the liver, C-reactive protein is known as an inflammato- ry marker, and this protein indicates the presence of in- flammation in the body. Since experts believe hardening of the arteries is an inflammatory process, hs-CRP may pre- dict heart disease along with the standard cholesterol screening tests. The hs-CRP measure may indicate whether cholesterol plaque is about to rupture, releasing clots in the blood stream. A number of drugs can affect hs-CRP levels including aspirin, beta-blockers, and statins. Research has also shown that a good multivitamin, particularly one with vitamin B6 and vitamin C, also lowers C-reactive protein. CoQ10: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is found in every cell in your body. CoQ10 has a broad range of functions, but its main function is to serve as a catalyst to convert the food we eat into energy. Described as “cardioprotective”, CoQ10 protects both the blood vessels that feed the heart, and the heart muscle itself, from damage. CoQ10 levels are lower in patients with heart muscle disorders and de- creased heart function, so improving CoQ10 in blood levels has been associated with improvements in ejection frac- tion, a measure of heart function. Research indicates that statins (cholesterol lowering medications) deplete the level of CoQ10 in your body. For this reason, I suggest that pa- tients taking a statin also take CoQ10 daily. Vitamin D: Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that func- tions as a hormone in the body. The benefits of vitamin D include bone strength and cardiovascular health. Research suggests individuals with low levels of vitamin D have ele- vated risk of heart attack. In a study conducted in Den- mark, researchers found that individuals with extremely low blood levels of vitamin D had an 81% increased risk of fatal heart disease, and 64% increased risk of heart attack when compared with people with higher vitamin D levels. Omega-3: There are literally thousands of studies showing the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for the heart because they help lower blood pressure, resting heart rate, risk of arrhythmia, sudden death, and triglycerides. Omega-3 fats can also improve the HDL/LDL cholesterol ratio and re- duce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a precur- sor to diabetes. For the second month in a row, it is no surprise that these four vitamins are on our list of the Top Five Supplements we recommend to almost everyone. “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” - Ephesians 2:10

FEBRUARY 2018

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in adults in the United States, surpassing death from all other forms of can-cer, respiratory disease, stroke, and accidents. While most adults are terrified of succumbing to Alzheimer’s, heart disease took almost 300,000 lives in the US in 2016, while only 43,000 died from Alzheimer’s.

So, what can you do to lessen the chances of dying from heart disease? A multi-prong approach is actually the best approach for reducing heart disease mortality risk—controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels (and dia-betes if you have it), maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, refraining from excessive alcohol use, and not smoking. While it’s sometimes impossible to over-come genetics, controlling many of these factors is largely a lifestyle issue, so it’s safe to say that a lot of heart disease is preventable. Looking at these factors, there are a lot of sup-plements that can positively impact heart health.

Multivitamins: If you’ve had a comprehensive blood panel

run anytime recently, it likely measured levels of a protein called hs-CRP or high sensitivity C-reactive protein. Made by the liver, C-reactive protein is known as an inflammato-ry marker, and this protein indicates the presence of in-flammation in the body. Since experts believe hardening of the arteries is an inflammatory process, hs-CRP may pre-dict heart disease along with the standard cholesterol screening tests. A number of drugs can affect hs-CRP levels including aspirin, beta-blockers, and statins. Research has also shown that a good multivitamin, particularly one with vitamin B6 and vitamin C, also lowers C-reactive protein.

and the heart muscle itself, from damage. Two women, who are dog owners, are arguing over

which dog is smarter.

First woman, “My dog is so smart. Every morning he waits for the paperboy to come around and then he takes a newspaper and brings

it to me.”

Second woman, “I know.”

First woman, “How?”

Second woman, “My dog told me.”

Vaginal dryness and atrophy is a silent epidemic that affects many women who are undoubtedly suffering

in silence. This chronic and progressive medical con-dition has been estimated to affect up to 50-60% of postmenopausal women. With increased life expec-

tancy, the impact of vaginal dryness on quality of life, sexual functioning, and urogynecologic health is be-

coming more evident. Many younger women and those in perimenopause (or in the transitional period)

may also experience periodic vaginal dryness and as-sociated problems.

Women with this condition may have a variety of symptoms that may include vaginal and vulvar pain,

external and internal irritation, and aches in the vulva and vagina. Vaginal dryness due to lowered estrogen

levels can be accompanied by itching, severe burning, discharge, and painful intercourse. Frequently, wom-en also report urogenital problems and urinary com-

plaints that may include multiple irritative urinary tract infections, increased urinary frequency and in-

continence, and discomfort. Together, these have a great impact on overall quality of life.

Treatment goals for vaginal atrophy include alleviat-ing symptoms, reversing or minimizing the physiolog-

ic changes, and improving quality of life for the pa-tient. Many prescribers are turning to intravaginal

therapy since oral medications seem to take longer to work and have more side effects. Some women have great success with estriol vaginal cream or gel to help

vaginal dryness, irritation, and frequent UTIs.

Estriol is a bio-identical hormone that is produced in women’s bodies in large amounts by the placenta dur-ing pregnancy and in relatively small amounts by the

liver and other fat tissue. Sometimes called the “forgotten estrogen,” estriol is considered to be the

most therapeutic estrogen for the vaginal lining, cer-vix, and vulvar tissues, but exerts only a weak effect

elsewhere in the body. Estriol is quite good at “plumping up” these delicate tissues to help reverse vaginal dryness, irritation, and atrophy.

A second, stronger form of estrogen known as estradi-

ol is also prescribed for vaginal atrophy. Bio-identical estradiol is commercially available in the form of a vaginal cream. Unfortunately, the cost can be ex-

treme.

We can compound estriol and estradiol

vaginal creams and

gels in our state-of-the-art compounding

lab. One advantage to using compounded

bio-identical hormones is that we can customize your dose, combining hormones as necessary, expressly to meet your needs. We have even found that many

times it is a more affordable option.

FILLING THE GAPS In our modern world, you can’t get all of the nutrients you need, even from a well-rounded, healthy diet. The reality is that gaps in the American diet are widespread. We con-sume far more sugar and processed foods than our grand-parents would have ever dreamed possible. Even if we did eat “perfectly”, there is clear evidence for declining nutri-ent composition of food. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition looked at changes in food composition for 43 garden crops from 1950 to 1999. As a group, the 43 foods that were studied showed de-clines in six areas: protein, calcium, potassium, iron, ribo-flavin, and ascorbic acid. A rather important group!

Once you decide to start taking a multivitamin, look for:

Convenience: It won’t help if you don’t take it.

Gender Specific: Women and men have different nutri-

tional needs.

Age Specific: Nutritional needs change as you age.

We carry many great multivitamins at Norland Avenue Pharmacy. If you would like help, please stop in and ask!
