Chamber Sponsors Forum On Health Care Reform As the debate on health care reform in Colorado continues, it is important for businesses to learn the issues and weigh in on possible fixes. The Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce, along with the Business Health Forum, will host a presentation on Tuesday, June 24, to update employers on health care reform efforts and capture their responses to proposed changes. Ralph Pollock and Amy Fletcher of the Business Health Forum will lead the discussion. Pollock is a frequent speaker on health care market dynamics. He served on the Blue Ribbon Commission for Health Care Reform and chairs the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry’s health council. Prior to joining the Business Health Forum, Fletcher spent seven years reporting on health care and the state Legislature for the Denver Business Journal. Join us to review recommendations from a blue ribbon commission on health care and legislative proposals, and give us your feedback to take back to the Capitol. The latest survey technology will capture your opinions and those of your peers for on-the-spot sharing and discussion. The meeting will be held from 7:30 to 9 AM, Tuesday, June 24 in the Krey/Zeigel Room of the Mesa State College Student Center. Register online at www.gjchamber.org or by calling 970-242-3214.
Help Us Recruit New Employees to the Area The Chamber’s Workforce Committee in collaboration with the Mesa County Workforce Center is preparing materials for several out-of-state job fairs. One opportunity already targeted for mid-July is a job fair in Las Vegas, an area that has seen a major slowdown in construction. Workforce Center personnel have already agreed to physically staff our booth at these trade shows but we need employers’ help in compiling a “take away” piece with information on job opportunities in the area. We are asking employers to forward a brief description of their company, their website address and the location of job listings (i.e. the company website, chamber website, national job posting sites, etc.) to the Chamber office as quickly as possible. Please e-mail your information to Shawna Grieger ([email protected]) or Diane Schwenke ([email protected]) in the Chamber office. The Workforce Committee will also be preparing a brief two minute slide show of the area which will be available to any employer who is doing out of state recruitment.

Activities Related To Energy Slated For June With the Colorado Oil and Gas Commission (COGCC) scheduling hearings in Grand Junction on proposed new rules for June 10th, a tour of the Roan Plateau slated for June 17th and an Energy Briefing highlighting “An Industry Perspective on the COGCC Rulemaking” for June 3rd this will be the month for members to get educated and speak up about a major driver of our economy. As many members are aware, the COGCC has been engaged in a rulemaking process since directed by the 2007 Legislature in HB 1298 and HB 1341 to adopt new rules to address the concerns of wildlife, public health issues and expediting of permits. The meeting scheduled in Grand Junction on June 10th at Two Rivers Convention Center will be an opportunity for the Commission to accept public comment on the proposed rule released earlier this spring. The Chamber intends to offer comment similar to the concerns raised during the pre-draft hearing process. Members are urged to become involved in this process which will determine the future course of energy development on the Western Slope. The Roan Plateau has been the center of attention since the BLM created a plan to allow limited drilling on top of this natural formation that is home to wildlife and natural beauty in addition
to major energy deposits. As part of the chamber’s ongoing efforts to educate members about energy related topics and issues, the Chamber in collaboration with Williams Production is hosting a five hour tour of the area. Participants will leave the Chamber at 8:00 AM on June 17th and return at approximately 3:00 PM. For more information or to register for this tour contact Ryan at the Chamber office ([email protected] or 970-263-2917). The Chamber’s energy briefing series continues this month with the topic of “An Industry Perspective on the COGCC Rulemaking” on June 3rd, 7:30 AM at the Chamber office. As always, there is no cost to attend these informative sessions but reservations for planning purposes are appreciated and can be made online at www.gjchamber.org and clicking on events.
Board Takes Action At the May meeting of your board of directors members heard a summary of the finding of the AGNC Socio Economic Study of Energy Development…approved the format of a letter to the COGCC concerning the draft rules for drilling that will be presented to the Commission in June…appointed Dan Roberts and Bob Wilson to the IDI Board for another three year term…and approved thirteen businesses for membership in the organization.
Chairman’s Reportby Betty Bechtel
On May 13, I attended the Chamber’s graduation ceremony for the Mesa County Leadership Program. A select group of 12 participants had completed the 10-month class that began last September, and their sponsors, program presenters, family and many local leaders gathered at the Pinyon
Grill to congratulate them. From the smiles, the noise level, and the disclosure of class secrets by their chosen speaker, classmate Birgit Rose, it was obvious that the graduates had gained from the Program more than an understanding of how Mesa County works through leadership--they had gained a dozen new friends who are all go-getters. Mark my word, this group will accomplish great things in our community, and they’ll do it partly through the relationships they built in the Leadership Program. The event caused me to think about why the Chamber, with the help of its public and private partners, began the Leadership Program in 1992. The community had gone through ten years of economic crisis following Black Sunday, and was finally enjoying the fruits of recovery. Good leadership in the public and private sectors had made an economic turn-around happen. There was a strong desire to ensure continued success. How better to keep the community on track, long-term, than by bringing together rising stars from the business, non-profit and public arenas and letting our current leaders share with them relevant experiences and personal knowledge of the community, its resources and needs–show them the ropes, so to speak. The Leadership Program was born and is working. Many graduates of the program are now in leadership positions in Mesa County, doing great things. One such graduate is Michael Stahl, presently the acting CEO of Hilltop, a director of GJEP, and past Chairman of the Chamber. Another is Tom Benton, Chair of 4-H Livestock and a past member of the Mesa County Planning Commission. More recent graduates taking leadership roles include Travis Robinson, President of Grand Valley Young Professionals, and Deb Hoefer, who is serving on the VCB Advisory Board. There are many, many more. On behalf of the Chamber, I wish to congratulate the graduates, past, present and future, and thank everyone
J u n e 2 0 0 8 w w w . g j c h a m b e r . o r g 3who contributes their time, energy, talents, knowledge and, of course, money, to make the Leadership Program happen. And regarding this year’s graduates, as Birgit Rose explained in her speech, “we’ve got your names and numbers–you can run but you can’t hide.” The community will be calling!
Congratulations 2008 Leadership Class The Chamber would like to take this opportunity to publicly recognize the 2007-2008 Mesa County Leadership Class on successfully completing over 80 hours of instruction in leadership and community issues. These are the people who are already committed to making a difference in our community and have shown through their participation that they will be thoughtful leaders on our nonprofit and public boards in the future. Golf Goodies Sought The year is almost half over! And that means the Chamber’s Annual Golf Tournament is right around the corner. With over 200 golfers this is one of the largest tournaments of the entire year. It will also be one of the most enjoyable ways to network in late September (September 26th to be exact) when the Grand Valley is truly a pleasant place to enjoy outdoor activities. The Chamber is now soliciting items for the bags we will be giving to each registered golfer. This is an excellent way to market your business so give us a call at 242-3214 if you would like to insert golf balls, tees, towels, a better swing…you name it!
New Faces at the Chamber There have been a couple of changes recently in the Chamber staff. Ginny Revel has joined the staff as our information specialist manning the front office. She has years of experience in an office setting and has worked in several attorney offices as well (something we won’t hold against her). Barb Bullock has left the Chamber staff to pursue a career as an investigator for the Public Defender’s Office. Lindsay Byers will join the staff on June 9th and assume the duties of Events and Member Relations Manager. A recent graduate of Colorado State University, Lindsay has interned in the State Legislature and with a business trade association in the recent past.
Market Your Community Events The Chamber maintains a community calendar of events that is updated continuously as a service to the area. If you or someone you know is planning an event, list that event with us at no charge. It is fast and easy. You can go to our website, www.gjchamber.org, click on “events” and then click on “add an event”. If you prefer you may also call in the information to our office at 242-3214. We will need the name of the event, date, a brief description and a contact for more information.

Businesses The Target Of Multiple Ballot Proposals Now that lawmakers are headed home for the year, our attention turns to the November ballot, where legislators and citizens will ask voters to make big decisions on: Unions, Businesses, Employers, Trial Lawyers, Farmers, Home Builders, Executives, Real Estate Brokers, Doctors, Oil & Gas, Real Estate Buyers and TABOR/Amendment 23, to name a few. At the top of the priority list of measures for businesses no doubt is the ongoing clash between business and labor. The “Right to Work” measure has the necessary signatures and is ready for the ballot. In response to the measure, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union filed five initiatives of their own:
Mandatory “Cost of Living” pay increases•
“Safe Workplace” - gives employees the right •to sue for alleged unsafe working conditions
Employer responsibility for health insurance •for employees and their dependents
Prohibition on tax incentives or subsidies to •companies that “off-shore” jobsIncrease in assessment ratio for business from •29% to 34% for property tax
The Chamber is closely watching these and other important initiatives as their respective proponents begin the process of setting title and gathering signatures. At this point, the Chamber Board has not yet taken formal position on these measures, but will likely take action in the coming weeks. For a comprehensive look at the total of 128 initiatives filed this year, visit the Legislature’s home page at www.leg.state.co.us, which is the state’s primary Web resource for learning about ballot initiatives, legislation, interim committees and a wealth of other information concerning Colorado law.

Get The Facts In Chamber Profile You read about the state of the national economy every day and the news is not good. But for business planning purposes you need to get the “real skinny” on what is happening on a local level. And, our economy is not following the national trends. The Chamber has produced a new community profile that offers a thumbnail sketch of local economic activity along with community demographics and other useful community information. Copies of the new publication are now available at the Chamber office. All membership levels receive some copies of the profile at no cost beginning with Business Memberships who receive ten and ranging up to 1,000 free copies at the Chairman level. Additional copies beyond the initial allocation are available at a cost of fifty cents per piece to defray printing costs.

Did you know that sponsoring a Chamber event or service is five times more effective in reaching business clients than any other form of media outreach? We didn’t either but that is what we have heard anecdotally from some of our members who have tried utilizing our sponsorship opportunities. With sponsorships ranging in price from $250 to over $3,000 there is something for every member’s budget. Our sponsorship opportunities have also expanded in terms of events (think Annual Banquet, Legislative Trip, Golf Tournament, Business Showcase and Job Fair) and in terms of publications and services (think community profile, voters guide, event programs, legislative links and even more). Here are just a few of our current and upcoming opportunities:
