A few months ago I met someone at a party who asked me what I did. On telling her that I ran the Two Moors Festival, she said, ‘Oh, you mean the big one! Shortly after this, someone else commented on the

Festival being unique. Ever since, I have been wondering why.Is it because of its Foot and Mouth Disease background? Or that we cover

a vast 1200 square miles patch – or could it be (as quoted in Private Eye) that we recover well from disasters? I suppose one could say that a dropped piano, and the knock-on effect of the tragic fire in Exeter’s Clarence Hotel have provided the Festival with two of the many hurdles that we have had to overcome. However, we have bounced back from all of them and no doubt have learnt much in the process. Staying power – and never taking no for an answer are the reasons why the Festival has developed into the major arts organisation it is today.

Every year the Festival faces new challenges. They might be that some of the church venues have removed some of their pews therefore throwing carefully planned row numbers into complete disarray. It could also be that artists go to the wrong moor – and this has happened. Music can be left at home, cufflinks forgotten, tickets mislaid or that a singer has lost his voice at the last moment. It’s even been known for an ensemble as well as an orchestra to turn up armed with the wrong music!

As to what is on offer this year, I hope there is enough variety to satisfy the tastes of each member of the audience. One person may be devoted to

Renaissance repertoire while another might revel in opera; someone else will happily immerse

himself in Lieder but not so with jazz.

Among the glittering array of artists taking part, pianist Barry Douglas and Tasmin Little - both among the foremost artists in the UK - will be giving recitals on the 14 and 19 October respectively. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra visits the Southwest for the first time. The celebrated Endellion Quartet and supremely talented Heath Quartet fill the chamber music slots while Schubert’s three famous song cycles are to be performed in one day with pianist, Jâms Coleman (tackling no less than fifty-eight songs in the process!).This year’s crop of Young Musicians Platform winners show exceptional talent – so make sure you hear them in their concert on the 21 October.

The final concert is worth a mention in that the splendid amateur orchestra, North Devon Sinfonia, winners of BBC Four’s ‘All together Now – The great Orchestra Challenge’, happen to be part of the local community. The urge to do Haydn’s Creation with them proved to be irresistible and particularly with many choral singers from the Devon Wildlife Trust taking part as well.

There are three talks worth highlighting; one given by the Exmoor Society, during which listeners will be enlightened on the valuable work performed by the organisation; presenter Sally Sedgman will lead a programme that combines art with musical improvisation and the Devon Wildlife lecture will provide a fascinating insight into just how much flora and fauna exists in this precious landscape.

I would like to think there is enough diversity in this year’s programme to entice as many people as possible to come to the Two Moors Festival. It is a special event and one that the Trustees and I are passionate about. It’s impossible to please everyone but we do give it our best shot.

Welcome to the Two Moors Festival 2017!

BARRY DOUGLASPIANOLIVE BROADCAST FOR

Barry Douglas is one of the world’s most eminent and sought after pianists. Having won the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in 1986 he has toured the world performing with all the major orchestras as well as giving countless solo recitals. He appears regularly at the Proms and records exclusively for the Chandos label. He is an artist who relishes a challenge the most recent of which was to record the complete piano works of Johannes Brahms.

His programme will appeal to music lovers whether they be discerning devotees or those who simply enjoy listening to exquisite piano playing. Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons were inspired by poems reflecting the months of the year while Schubert’s C minor Piano Sonata shares many links with his Winterreise Song Cycle.

It was on listening to Dame Felicity Lott’s recording of Strauss’s Four Last Songs that inspired artist, Benedict Rubbra to paint four abstract paintings. The natural progression from this was to include a Masterclass focusing on these magnificent settings of texts by Eichendorf and Hesse.

Dame Felicity will be working with two very fine emerging professional singers, Nia Coleman and Lorena Paz Nieto, winner of the Oxford Lieder Prize.

Benedict Rubbra’s paintings At Dusk 2016, September 2016, Going to Sleep 2016 and Spring 2016 (shown below) will be on display.

Barry Douglas is joined by the celebrated Endellion String Quartet. For over thirty years the Quartet has graced the world’s finest concert halls and embraced most of the chamber music repertoire. Their broadcasts, television appearances and collaborations with other esteemed artists are inexhaustible and no less so than on this occasion when they perform Brahms’s rich Piano Quartet with Barry Douglas.

The other works, Haydn’s Op 54 String Quartet and that of Beethoven’s Op 18 reflect the complicated relationship between the two composers; Beethoven is quoted as saying that he never learnt anything during his studies with Haydn!

One of the world’s greatest orchestras, City of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra makes its first appearance in Exeter. In 2008 the CBSO realised its potential under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle and since then has risen to the ranks of international prominence with Michael Seal as Associate Conductor.

BBC New Generation artist, Pavel Kalesnikov was a winner at 2011’s Tchaikovsky Piano Competition and also the Gilels competition. He has performed with many prestigious orchestras and his appearance with the CBSO alone is testament to his gifts.

Glinka Overture ‘Ruslan and Lyudmila’Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor Op 16Brahms Symphony in C minor Op 68 No 1

Glinka’s sparkling Overture to his opera, Ruslan and Lyudmila (based on a poem by Pushkin) is a great favourite. This couldn’t be a better introduction to Grieg’s masterpiece written in 1868. The only concerto to be completed by the composer, the work was first heard in this country in 1872; from then on, it has become one of the most recognisable concerti ever written for the piano.

As for Brahms’s first symphony, it is a mighty work, rich in texture and worthy of the famous quote in the final movement – ‘Thus blew away the shepherd’s horn today’.

The Heath Quartet is one of the most exciting British chamber ensembles to appear in recent years. They have been selected for the Wigmore Hall’s Emerging Talent Scheme, with plans for the 2017/18 season including a cycle of Jörg Widmann’s string quartets.

The programme for this recital covers a range of genres that represent the different styles of the Classical, twentieth century and back in time to the Romantic Periods. Haydn’s Op 76 Quartets were composed while the composer was in residence with Prince Esterházy; the Tippett Quartets were inspired by the need to turn over an old 78rpm record, often in musically strategic places, and Mendelssohn’s work was written in homage to his sister, Fanny.

Franz Schubert wrote some of the greatest music the world has ever heard, including over 600 songs (Lieder). His predominant themes were love and its loss, longing and loneliness. Schubert’s songwriting reached its apogee in the two great cycles, Die Schöne Müllerin and Winterreise and in the collection of songs known as Schwanengesang, the very last that he composed.

For German Lied aficionados and newcomers to the genre alike, this marathon of Schubert Song Cycles is a must, revealing as they do Schubert’s genius for composing songs that are poignant, beautiful and heart-rending.

Each singer will explain the background to these famous settings, as each song describes a mood or is part of a narrative.

It’s worth mentioning that the fine pianist, Jâms Coleman will be tackling no less than fifty-eight songs in one day.

Please give it a go!

Die SchÖne Müllerin is the first of the Cycles and thought to be one of the composer’s most significant works. Originally written with a tenor in mind, it tells the story of a young man who falls in love with a miller’s daughter.

The celebrated singer, Elena Gerhardt said of Winterreise, “you have to be haunted by this cycle to be able to sing it”. It is one of the most moving works in the Lieder repertoire ever to be composed. The songs highlight the importance of the pianist’s equal role within the genre.

Schwanengesang or Swansong consists of a collection of songs written by three different poets; Haslinger, Rellstab and Heine. They were published posthumously and attracted Liszt to transcribe many of them. The final song, Taubenpost, is thought to be Schubert’s final Lied and a joyous finale to the overall total of over seven hundred songs.

Last year’s open rehearsal project proved to be such a success that it seemed a good idea to repeat the formula.

On this occasion, Tasmin Little is accompanied by a charismatic team of artists: BBC New Generation Artist and supremely talented cellist, Michael Petrov; gifted clarinettist, Jordan Black (who played at John Adie’s Memorial Concert) and Andrey Gugnin whom Tasmin ‘discovered’ while in Australia last year.

Tasmin will be exploring Debussy’s three instrumental Sonatas not only comparing the links between them but also their differing qualities.

Following a break for lunch, the artists will return to give an open rehearsal on Messiaen’s profoundly moving Quartet for the End of Time.

YOUNG MUSICIANS PLATFORM COMPETITIONWINNERS’ RECITALWITH ALISON FARR PIANO

SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER

The Festival’s Young Musicians Platform Competition has become a known and much valued performance opportunity for instrumentalists aged eighteen and under within the region. The audition format is relaxed, the panel of four is welcoming and the atmosphere full of fun. It is in this environment that students give their best and enjoy making music. The standard of the competition is high and the annual concert given by the winners is an exciting event and well worth attending. Above all, these aspiring instrumentalists need as much encouragement as possible in a fiercely competitive world.

DEVON WILDLIFE TRUSTHARRY BARTON CEO‘INSPIRED BY NATURE’

What can an eighteenth-century composer tell lovers of the natural world today? If one piece of music ever stood out as a statement of pure reverence for the natural world, then Haydn’s Creation is surely it.

In Devon we have one of the best natural environments anywhere, with stunning moorlands, cascading rivers and shimmering seas. Haydn delights in all these aspects of nature, and is as admiring of the “glittering plumes” of a bird in flight as he is of the “sinuous trace” of the humble worm.

Haydn’s masterpiece was written at a time when the world was turning to empirical science, machines and utilitarianism. And with this revolution in thought came the taming of nature in every sense – from the industrialisation of our rivers to the view of wildlife as a resource to be exploited. Little wonder that so many species – including the nightingale, our most melodious songster – have disappeared from Devon since Creation was written.

Today, our natural environment is under greater pressure than ever. But there are signs that the tide is changing. Companies like South West Water are paying DWT to help clean up our rivers. We are starting to welcome back native animals like the beaver. And educationalists are becoming ever more interested in the wealth of evidence showing that we feel and learn better when we have contact with the wild.

SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER

In our modern world it can seem that something has to be measured or have a price tag to be given any value. But there is surely no substitute for the pure, subjective joy in nature’s intrinsic beauty. Maybe Haydn will have the last word after all!

Chief Executive Harry Barton joined Devon Wildlife Trust in October 2011, having spent the previous five years as Chief Executive of the Earth Trust in Oxfordshire. He has worked for nearly twenty-five years in the environmental sector, including spells at the Council for National Parks, Kew Gardens, CPRE and the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. Harry studied Geography at Durham University (BSc) and then Environmental Policy at Wye College, University of London (MSc). He has a passion for the environment and a particular interest in landscape scale conservation, having played a key role developing the Wildlife Trust movement’s Living Landscapes programme.

Harry’s other interests include cycling, running, martial arts, music and issues surrounding disability, especially autism. He firmly believes that spending time in the outdoors - especially the wonderful places we have in Devon - are essential in keeping us happy and healthy.

The Festival has included a choral concert whenever possible. Having the North Devon Sinfonia, winners of BBC Four’s Great Orchestral Challenge, on the doorstep, has provided an irresistible incentive to put on a performance of Haydn’s joyous and splendid Creation.

The NDS (as it is known) whose players come from one of the most rural areas in Devon, produced a standard of performance that surpassed the nations’ other amateur orchestras. Not only that, but their enthusiasm showed no bounds! They are joined by a massed Two Moors Festival chorus that includes members from the Devon Wildlife Trust and Blundell’s School. The soloists are some of the foremost young professional artists; the Chorus Master none other than Colin Howard (known to many in the Festival) and the performance will be directed by NDS’s conductor, Emma Kent.

HANDEL’S ‘ALCINA’ IN CONCERT

Tickets: Details of how to book will be available

on the website in the autumn

The adaptation of this opera is intended as a semi-staged collage of materials from George Frideric Handel’s great opera, Alcina. It is a chance to enjoy the spectacular arias of this opera with theatrical

staging to connect the characters, story, music and drama.

Harvey Davies’s ensemble from the alumni of the Royal Northern College of Music and in

collaboration with the American tenor, Chase Hopkins, have put together a mesmerising

team of singers for this production.

‘One distinction of presenting opera in this format is the absolute necessity

of the participants being good actors. This was certainly the case here.’

‘Carving for posterity’Master Carver Laurence Beckford lives and works in Dulverton, and is one of only handful of master carvers and apprentices in the country.

Laurence’s work is in high demand, and he has worked on many prestigious projects, including the restoration of the fire damaged

Grinling Gibbons carvings at Hampton Court Palace and the replacement of the carved enrichments in the State and Octagon Dining

Rooms at Windsor Castle (where Laurence was the ‘signature’ carver).

Laurence’s talk will give us a fascinating insight into the rigorously detailed work involved in the restoration of fire, weather and vandal-damaged carvings. He will also talk about his passion

for traditional ‘hand cut’ lettering in slate and stone. If you would like to see more of Laurence prior to his talk you

can visit his website www.beckfordsartworks.co.uk
