What started as a hobby grew into a home-based business four years ago, when Laurie Wadle was asked to become a state-licensed bakery in or-der to supply a local caterer with cookies. Since that time, the small home-based bakery has grown into the 13th Street mainstay business known as Morning Glory Bakery. In the summer of 2011, Laurie and husband, Dave, opened their 13th Street location with the help of Team Work One, LLC, Marshall Economic Development Impact Committee (MEDIC), and their own hard work and perseverance. They expanded their menu, offering not just baked goods, but lunch sandwiches, soups, and fresh-baked breads.

The decision to move out of their home was not an easy one for the Wadles, but they had faith in being part of the 13th Street Revitalization. “I began baking out of my home four years ago,” said Laurie. “It all grew from there. I soon began supplying pies and other goodies to local businesses.” Today Laurie and her team at the bakery are best known for their sticky buns, cinnamon rolls, cookies and super moist cakes. But she added that their lunches are becoming more and more popular, especially their chicken salad on croissant. “One thing people don’t know about us is that you can buy our dough,” added Laurie. “You can buy our cookie dough, cinnamon roll dough, cut- out sugar cookie dough already rolled out, and you can bake it all at home. You can even safely eat all of the dough because we use pasteurized eggs.”

In addition to being committed to their business, the Wadles are also dedicated to the community. They donate and provide discounts to a number of community, school, and Chamber functions throughout the year. “Owning a business in Marshall-town is pretty amazing. People in this town are so excited to see the 13th Street area be brought back to

‘the way it used to be’ and encour-age other businesses to come down here,” said Laurie. “A small local community like this is wonderful to be a part of. Our regular custom-ers are such a joy to see all week. Whether it’s the couple that comes in and eats a couple of cake donuts a couple times a week, or the insur-ance agent who comes in several times a week to get sticky rolls for his clients. We love seeing them and have enjoyed getting to know them all by name or food prefer-ence!” One unique aspect of Morn-ing Glory’s business is that their school-aged children often help out the store, waiting on customers, run-ning the cash register and cleaning tables. “We like watching our kids interact with the customers and vice versa,” added Laurie. “It’s fun listening to the kids count change back to custom-ers.” In 2009, Morning Glory Bakery joined the Marshalltown Area Cham-ber of Commerce. “It was the best decision I could have made. The Chamber is an integral part of this community and is there to help when-ever they can. The Chamber members truly make up a great ‘web’ of connections,” said Laurie. Although the past year has been difficult due to the 13th Street con-struction, the Wadles are thankful to the customers who stuck by them and to City and others who made the project happen. “It’s amazing down here now,” said Laurie. “All of us down here on 13th Street appreciate you all and look forward to the next year!” Morning Glory Bakery is located at 209 North 13th Street. Sports Page expands and relocates Sports fans, coaches and athletes will soon have the opportunity to enjoy a new level of service and merchandise as Sports Page recently expanded and relocated at Marshall Town Center. Sports Page opened December 1 in its brand new location at the main entrance to the shopping center, across from Mama DiGrado’s. “The opportunity to expand our selection of athletic apparel and shoes was just one reason we made the decision to relocate at the mall,” said Todd Thimesch, owner of Sports Page. “This expansion will also provide the opportunity for our customers to be able to actually try out the latest in athletic footwear before they even make their purchase.” Athletes will be able to test new shoes on the miniature indoor basket-ball court inside the store or test those new cleats on a section of artificial turf. Other interactive displays will enhance the level of excellent customer service that Sports Page is known for, “We could not be happier to work with Todd and his staff to help Sports Page expand in order to better serve our customers,” stated Ken Huge, General Manager of Marshall Town Center. “Sports Page is literally synonymous with Marshall Town Center. It was our goal to maintain that relationship for the community as well as the shopping center.” While the “new” Sports Page is currently open, the store’s former loca-tion at the south end of the mall has been renamed “Sports Page Express” and will be open through the end of the year, featuring great merchandise at great prices. Sports Page is a locally owned sporting goods store, which caters to area high school and collegiate teams, as well as athletes of all ages. In addition to the Marshalltown location, they also has locations in Altoona, Ames and Pella.

Shop Small Saturday a Success! On Saturday, November 24, the Mar-shalltown Area Chamber of Commerce and twenty of our small business members, participated with the rest of the country in celebrating Small Business Saturday. The Chamber’s promotion called Shop Small Saturday, featured a number of local retail businesses who each gave away between $50 and $150 in prepaid American Express gift cards. The Chamber was one of only fifty chambers from across the country to be selected to partner with American Express on the retail holiday. “We were very excited to have this chance to highlight a number of our small business members,” said Chris Brodin, Chamber Board Vice Chair of Membership Services. “It was a great day where people got out and shopped in our locally-owned stores.” “Wow! I want to let you know what a great day we had on ‘Small Busi-ness Saturday’. The shop was constantly filled with visitors who seemed to be enjoying the spirit of the event,” said Pam Swarts, owner of The Perfect Setting, one of the participating businesses. “Hurray to the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce and American Express!” The Chamber would like to extend a huge thank you to the businesses who participated in the November 24 promotion, as well as anyone who “shopped small” on that day.

BUSINESS NEWSChamber announces 2013 state legislative priorities

The Chamber Board of Directors formally approved the 2013 state legislative priorities at its December meeting as recommended by the Government Affairs committee. They focus on key issues that impact our businesses everyday – taxes, regulations and workforce. Incentives are also an important factor in helping our businesses grow, as well as helping make significant improvement in our community. Tax credit incentives, as an example, have made projects like the proposed renovation of the Tallcorn and the Iowa Wholesale building possible. These priorities will be presented to our elected officials prior to the start of the 2013 legislative session. Watch for updates on all key issues during the session. Friday legislative forums are also being planned as a way to stay in touch with our elected officials and with the issues being considered during the session.

COMMERCIAL/INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY TAX Iowa’s tax environment continues to be a challenge for existing business health, expansion potential and for the attraction of new businesses. Com-mercial/industrial property taxes are a major concern for the members of the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce. We support property tax reform that: •Requires local taxing entities to reduce costs wherever possible

• Addresses unfunded mandates, reforms pensions and other measures that impact local government budgets • Conducts a critical analysis of all programs that property tax currently supports to make sure property tax is the appropriate funding mechanism for those programs • Moves the four locally assessed classes of property taxpayers to more equitable treatment with the goal of lowering taxes for the commercial/industrial sectorEDUCATION & WORKFORCE SKILLS Marshalltown like all of Iowa is experiencing a significant gap between skills sought by employers and the skills our workforce currently possess-es. We support: • Using the Iowa’s community colleges as primary delivery system for programs that are designed to improve the skills of our existing workforce • Improve our K-12 student readiness to enter the workforce by using programs like the National Career Readiness Certification • A continued emphasis on Iowa’s push to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills in K-12 educationBUSINESS REGULATIONS Regulatory stability and responsiveness must be recognized as a critical component of our business climate. Therefore we support the adoption of a plan that implements a rolling-sunset requirement to review each rule/regulation for effectiveness that includes a cost-benefit analysis.ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT INCENTIVES Economic development incentives have been an important part of Mar-shalltown’s job retention and expansion success. Therefore, we support the continuation/creation of appropriate economic development incentives and tax credit programs that provide the necessary tools to the Iowa Part-nership for Economic Progress.

Travel Federation of Iowa Tourism gener-ated more than $7.2 billion in spending in 2011, and is respon-sible for more than $328.8 million in state tax revenues. Tourism marketing is a smart investment and pro-duces a quick economic benefit, yet Iowa spends far less on tourism marketing than its neighbors and is 45th nationally in funding for tourism promotion. Tourism produces almost twice as many jobs as the rest of the other private sector or the same value of sales and is one of the top ten employers in 48 states (including Iowa). Iowa travel generated enough state and local sales tax revenue to pay the entire salaries of all Iowa firefighters, police officers, and sheriffs. Put another way, rev-enues from travel in 2011 could pay the salaries of all Iowa middle school teachers. Sources: US Travel Association & Bureau of Labor Statistics (Economic Impact of Travel on Iowa’s Counties 2011) Tourism works for Iowa. It produces jobs, makes us healthier, contrib-utes to our quality of life, and improves the state’s bottom line. Tourism could contribute even more with the Legislature’s support for these priori-ties listed below. Invest in tourism marketing by increasing funding available for the Iowa Tourism Office, Iowa’s three tourism regions, regional tourism grant pro-grams, and cooperative marketing grants. • Increases state tax receipts. • Leverages private sector investment to expand into new markets. • Creates jobs and spurs entrepreneurship. Enforce Iowa’s current school start date. Tourism doesn’t compete with education - it helps pay for it. • Travel is education – kids learn outside the classroom. • Millions in state sales tax revenue are lost each day school starts early - including the local option sales tax for schools. • Let’s make sure all of Iowa is open for business during the entire month of August. Support outdoor recreation by increasing funding for state parks, trails, and community attraction and tourism (CAT) grants. • Improves Iowa’s quality of life. • Helps recruit & retain business. • Keeps Iowans healthy and active, and helps Iowa become the “Healthiest State.” Tourism in Iowa is about more than places to visit; it’s about jobs, economic growth, quality of life, and revenue generation. It’s about invest-ing in Iowa’s future. Tourism works for Iowa. Its economic impact reaches every job sector, county, school, child, and household in the state.

Economic Statistics

It is a great resource for current demographic information about

Marshalltown, Marshall County and the state of Iowa.

Business Retention and Expansion Business retention and expansion is a core component of any economic development program and compliments efforts to attract new businesses and the creation of new businesses. Business retention and expansion pro-grams assist businesses in an effort to keep them from relocating to other areas, help them survive economic difficulties, assist them with expansions that add new jobs and increase their competitiveness in the wider market-place. The focus is thus on existing companies, which form the local or region-al economic base. Studies have shown that the businesses already existing in a community are responsible for up to 80% of all net local employment, and many communities consider business retention and expansion pro-grams to be their primary mission. Business retention and expansion programs typically involve partner-ships of the business and community leadership that assess the economic base and the needs of individual companies within the community through periodic surveys and interviews with business owners and managers at company facilities. These surveys and interviews are normally carried out by economic development agencies. Based on these contacts and the information they generate, economic development organizations can inter-vene with strategies designed to retain and assist firms. This is important because the impact of a business closing or relocating can be significant. Closing or moving can reduce local employment, reduce the local tax base, lower surrounding property values, contribute to blight or decline, lower community image and lead to additional business closings. Converse-ly, business expansion and or retention can keep or increase local jobs, preserve or increase the local tax base, increase local property values and enhance the community’s image and economic health. Business retention and expansion also plays a key role in efforts in busi-ness attraction and recruitment. Many of the same economic development tools are used in both efforts. And existing businesses are the best sources for finding out if a community is a good place to locate and conduct busi-ness. The survival of businesses and the ability to retain them is integrally related to bringing new businesses into the area. Marshall Economic Development Impact Committee (MEDIC) main-tains an aggressive business retention and expansion program of regular visits and contact with Marshall County businesses and industries. In the recent past this regular con-tact has led to significant expansion and assistance to our area business and industry. For more information about MEDIC and their business retention and expansion program, contact MEDIC at 641-753-6645. Or visit the MEDIC website at www.marshalltownworks.com.

A leader leads by example in their pro-fessional lives as well as their personal lives. A leader is one who is insightful while also having an eye for detail and how all of the pieces fit together. ”

I wanted to learn skills I could use with organizing events as well as projects.”View on leadership: “I believe a leader needs to get along with people well and have a good amount of knowl-edge in the area that they’re leading in. They need to set reachable goals that still require involvement and adamancy so that the group doesn’t get off task.”
