HALAKHIC CORNER Q: What is the proper way to fulfill the Mitzvah of sitting in the Sukkah? A: Rav Yoel Sirkis, in his early 17 th century commentary on the Tur, entitled Bayit Chaddash (commonly known as the Bach) writes that a person should make it a point when sitting in the Sukkah to remember that he or she is doing so because G-d took the Jewish people out of Egypt and provided them with a protective cloud of glory during their sojourns in the desert. While it is important to always have in mind when performing any Mitzvah that one is doing so for the sake of G-d, it is especially important when sitting in the Sukkah as the Torah explicitly states, “So that your generations will know that I caused the Children of Israel to dwell in booths when I took them from the land of Egypt”. Since the Torah puts a special emphasis on knowing and understanding the reason behind the Mitzvah of Sukkah, special care must be taken to remember this fact while sitting in the Sukkah. If a person does not have the proper intentions in mind, Rabbi Yosef ben Meir Teomim in his 18 th century work, Pri Migadim, posits that one has nonetheless fulfilled the mitzvah of Sukkah. The Mishnah Berurah adopts this opinion. Interestingly, Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger, one of the great German Rabbis of the 19 th century, in his Sefer on the laws of Sukkah entitled, Bikkurei Yaakov, rules that since the Torah has put special emphasis on remembering the reason behind Mitzvot, if one does not do so, he or she has not fulfilled the Mitzvah. It is therefore critical to take a moment during the first meal on Sukkot to pause and think about why one is sitting in the Sukkah. Minhagim and Halakhot

FOR DAVENING @ HOME Sukkot 5781 (October 2 – October 9, 2020)

By Rabbi Elazar Muskin

The following guide has been compiled to help in lieu of davening with a Minyan. May we all

merit a healthy and uplifting Yom Tov.

Erev Sukkot – Friday October 2nd

• Recite a regular Shacharit. Omit Tachanun but insert Lamenatzeach between Ashrei and U’va

L’Tziyon.

• After Aleynu recite Tehilim chapter 27, L’David Hashem.

• Recite a regular Mincha, but omit Tachanun.

• When lighting Yom Tov candles recite Lehadlik Ner Shel Shabbat V’Shel Yom Tov and

Shehecheyanu.

• An abridged Kabbalat Shabbat is recited. It begins with Mizmor Shir L’yom HaShabbat. Bameh

Madlikin should be omitted.

• Both V’shamru and VaYedaber Moshe are recited before the Amida.

• Recite the Maariv Amida for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Shabbat and Sukkot.

• After the Maariv Amida recite Vayechulu but not Magen Avot and Elokeinu V’Elokei Avotenu.

They are only said when davening with a permanent Minyan. It is customary to recite Vayechulu

together with either another male or female.

• After Aleynu recite Tehilim chapter 27, L’David Hashem.

• Eat your Seudah in a Sukkah. Kiddush should not begin before 7:21 PM.

• Kiddush should begin with Vayechulu like on every Friday night and then follow a Yom Tov

Kiddush with Shabbat insertions. One should recite the Brakha for Leshev Ba’Sukkah at the end

of Kiddush before saying Shehecheyanu.

• Birkat HaMazon should include insertions for Shabbat and Sukkot.

First Day – Shabbat October 3rd

• Shacharit – Regular Shabbat - Yom Tov davening.

• Because it is Shabbat we do not use the Arba Minim.
