TheCenterforGlobalEnterprise(CGE)beganitsmissionfiveyearsagonextmonthtoadvanceandmakegloballyaccessiblecontemporarymanagementlearning.Itsoughttoopenupinnovativeappliedlearningmodelstobusinessleadersfromaroundtheworldbasedupontheconvictionthatknowledgesharingamongthemostseniorandmostengagedbusinessleaderscanproduceabetterconditionfordevelopedandemergingeconomiesalike.Sincethen,CGEhasengagedwithCEOsfromeveryhemisphere,convenedlargeandsmallbusinesses,andembracednewapproachestolearningthatprovideglobalandfreeaccesstoworld-classexpertsonleading-edgetopics.AndithasestablishedaGlobalScholarsProgramthatcomprisesover200institutionsoflearningacross96countriesandover4000individualstobothactasadistributionsystemforthecontentCGEcreates,andseekinsightsfromindividualswhocareaboutbringingthebesttosocietyfromtheprocessoflearning.
Asitbeginsitsnextchapter,CGEisproudoftheimpactithasmadeonthelivesofmanycurrentandfutureleaders,anditseekstoexpandthisimpactbydeepeninglearningacrossdistinctareasofmanagementresponsibilities.Digitalsupplychains,cyberreadiness,investorengagement,platformbusinessmodels,andAfricanentrepreneurshiparejustsomeoftheimmediateprogramsCGEisengagedinoverthenextfewmonths.Theabilityoftheseandotherareasofmanagementlearningtoattractindividualsinterestedincreatingsocialandeconomicvaluefromtherealmofknowledgesharingwillhelpdeterminewhetherthefutureisbrighterthantoday.

GlobalScholars(GS)MembershipinourGlobalScholarsprogram,CGE’sfreeglobalonlinelearningcommunityfocusedonappliedandcollaborativelearningactivities,continuedtoexpandin2017.Asofyearend,wehave214schoolsfrom96countries,and4,159individualmembers--upfrom2016yearendfiguresof156schoolmembersfrom87countries,and3,220individualmembers.Afewhighlightsfromthepastyearinclude:
• GSmanagedanAlphaTeamforCarbon,aSiliconValley-based3Dprintingsystemsstartuprevolutionizingadditivemanufacturing.Overthecourseofthe6-weekdigitalinternship,21teammembers—collectivelyrepresentingninecountries,threecontinents,and15languages—researchednewapplicationsofCarbon’stechnologyinthesparepartsmarket,identifyingkeytargetindustriesandcompaniesintheU.S.,Germany,UK,andJapan.
• GSconductedaMicro-CourseforalumnioftheGoldmanSachs10kWomenand10kSmallBusinessesprograms.Over5-weeks,100learnersrepresenting5countriesand24differentlanguagesparticipatedintheGlobalvs.LocalBrandingandMarketingonlinecourse.50%ofactivecourseparticipantsreceivedaCertificateofCompletion.
• GSdesignedandpresentedanewtwo-weekMicro-Lesson,PlatformBusinessModels,Management&
Strategy.Ratesofcompletionforthiscourse—31%—andotherCGEcurriculumcontinuetosignificantlyexceedindustrynormsforonlinelearning.
• GShostedExpertConnectwebinars,includingtwo90-minutesessionsledbySamPalmisanoonCyberSecurityandGlobalization.Studentsfrom11schoolsinteractedwithSam,ChrisCaineandKierstenTodtinfrontofaliveglobalaudience.
• GlobalScholarMemberschoolshavehelpedtoconveneseveralonline“CyberReadinessDialogues”withleadersofsmallandmedium-sizedbusinessestolearnabouttheirchallengesmanagingcybersecurity.ThedialogshelpthenewlyestablishedCyberReadinessInstitute(CRI)developcyberriskmanagementbestpracticesandtools.
• WecontinuetoengagewithGSalumnitomeasurelongtermoutcomesofourcourses.Inasurveyofalumniofour2016platformmanagementcourses,nearlytwodozenrespondentsreportedthattheexperiencewasinstrumentalintheirdecisiontostartanewcompany.

TheDigitalSupplyChainInstitute(DSCI)ThemissionoftheDSCI(dscinstitute.org)istohelpcompaniesaccelerateprogresstowardsatrulyDigitalSupplyChainthatboostsrevenuewhilecontrollingcosts.In2017,DSCIconvenedthreeExecutiveLeadershipForums:HongKong,Zurich,andBaltimore.Onaverage,eachmeetingattracted70seniorsupplychainandITleaders.SAP,Li&Fung,ZTE,ChainIQandUnderArmoursponsoredthesesessions,andavaluableexchangeofideasandapproacheswereshared.
TheDSCIfocusedonthreeresearchtopicsin2017.First,itdiveddeepintothetopicofPerformanceMetrics.ItisclearthatcompaniesmustadoptanewsetofmetricsthatsupporttheDigitalSupplyChainvision.Aspartofthiswork,wedevelopedaTransformationMaturityAssessment(TMA)thattwocompanieshavealreadyusedwithgreatsuccess(MicronandZTE).Second,webeganworkonthreepilotprojectsforDSCImembercompaniesthatuseBlockchaintoimprovesupplychainperformance.Onepilot,withAricent,iscomplete,successfulandreadytoscale.Theotherpilots(Li&Fung,LockheedMartin)areunderway.Third,wedelvedintothetopicofusingartificialintelligenceandmachinelearning(AI/ML)todriveDigitalSupplyChaindemand.
AfricanWomenEntrepreneurshipCooperative(AWEC)CGEentered2017knowingthatwehadasuccessfulandinnovativelearningmodelrootedinourMicro-Courseprogram.Thequestionwashowtoapplyitinasustainedmannertoaddressanexistingandsystemicgapintraditionaleducation.TheanswercamefromthealumniofourGlobalScholarsMicro-Courses.
Surveysandinterviewswithourcommunityof500+Africanalumnishowedthattheywantedmorein-depthtrainingoncriticalmanagementtopics,longerprogramengagementandmentorship,andasustainedpeernetwork.CGEcombinedthisfeedbackwiththeknowledgethatdespiteAfricaleadingtheworldinthenumberofwomenstartingbusinesses,theseentrepreneursfaceuniquebarriersthatthreatentostifleinnovationandslowthegrowthneededtopropeltheAfricaneconomy.Thesechallengesinclude:

capitalInresponsetothesechallenges,CGEcreatedtheAfricanWomenEntrepreneurshipCooperative(AWEC),aone-of-a-kind,12-monthtrainingprogramthatbuildsapan-Africancommunityofwomenentrepreneursandbusinessowners,empoweringthemwiththestrategy,leadershipandbusinessmanagementskillsneededforgrowthandeconomicadvancement.
ThefirstAWECcohortof200entrepreneurslaunchesinApril2018.

TheCyberReadinessInstitute(CRI)InJuly,theCenterforGlobalEnterpriseandtheCenterforResponsibleEnterpriseandTrade(CREATe.org)launchedanewnonprofitinstitute,TheCyberReadinessInstitute(CRI).CRIconvenesseniorleadersofglobalcompaniesfromacrosssectorstodevelopbestpracticesformanagingthepeople,processes,andtechnologyneededforeffectivecybersecurity.
TheAppliedCorporateGovernanceInstitute(ACGI)LaunchedinSeptember,theACGIadvisesinterestedstakeholders(e.g.companiesandinvestors)tounderstand,engage,andsucceedwithfrequentlycomplexandcontestedshareholdermatters.Conductingoverayear’sworthofleading-edgeresearchwithColumbiaUniversity,CGEdevelopedmanagementstrategiesandtacticsthroughtheuseofourproprietarypredictiveanalyticsandaBoardAdvisorswiththegoaltocreatethe“best,long-termoutcome”forallshareholders.TheAppliedCorporateGovernanceInstitutebeganastheEngagedInvestorresearchprojectin2016.ThisresearchwasdoneincollaborationwiththeRichardPaulRichmanCenterforBusiness,Law,andPublicPolicyatColumbia.Inadditiontothelaunchoftheformalinstitute,afewkeyhighlightsfrom2017include:
• InpartnershipwithColumbiaBusinessSchool,ACGIpublisheditsfirstresearchpaper,ManagementPracticesinanAgeofEngagedInvestors.
• ACGIdevelopeditsownproprietarydatabaseandpredictiveanalyticstool,theStewardshipVulnerabilityScoreTMtoidentifyvulnerabilitiestoapotentialshareholderengagement:
• ACGIpresentedresearchfindingsatseveralconferencesandmediaoutlets,includingtheNationalAssociationofCorporateDirectors(NACD)GlobalSummit,ColumbiaUniversityandBloombergMarkets
ThiscollectiveknowledgewillinformtheCyberReadinessInstitute’sdevelopmentofpracticalcontentandtoolstohelpsmallandmedium-sizedenterprisesaddressgrowingcybersecuritythreats,inordertosecureglobalvaluechains.TheInstitutewillalsofacilitatetheworkforcedevelopmentneededforimplementingthesecyberriskmanagementtools.
