The CG inlet ceilings meet the highest hygienic and air-handling demands for the filtration and air distributionfunctions in medicine.

Bacteria, viruses, and dust particles are separated before airenters rooms.

CG air distribution principle The CG laminar ceiling for sterile air is a large-area air outletcovered with two layers of fine micro-fabric. This specialarrangement facilitates the laminar discharge flow with a specified air velocity. The inductions and vortexes are limitedto the maximum extent and occur actually only in the fringeareas.

The disadvantages of perforated ceiling panels that, even witha closely spaced perforation, result in the occurrence ofvortexes inside the flow field in consequence of inductions, donot occur with the CG laminar ceiling for sterile air.

Due to an air velocity in the flow field of approximately 0.25 m/s and a CG special element for air distribution, impurities in the flow field, such as dust particles and germs, are directly drawn off.

A high level of cleanness of the area and an extremely lowlevel of germs (less than 10 germs per m3) are thus ensuredin the area of the operating table during operations.

The CG laminar ceiling for sterile air creates laminar, veryhomogenous discharge flow. The inner area of the inlet field isnot thus affected by pollutants from the surrounding area.

Sterile air is evenly distributed and flows at a rated velocityunder the whole outlet field. If the project is executed expertly, the quiet flow of air achieved by the CG laminar ceiling forsterile air is not experienced as unpleasant draught.

This „laminar flow“ determines the clear area in the room withits size corresponding to the ceiling panel. The use of curtainsat the air outlet or supporting flow is not required.

Level of germsThe publication of Prof. Dr. K. H. Knoll of the Medical Centre forHygiene and Medical Microbiology of the Phillips University inMarburg (at the Congress on Hygiene in 1986, authors: Steffenand Lühring (Figure 1) and the research of Thomas andMeierhans (Medical and Orthopaedic Technology, 1979, Figure 2)) presented the relevant data concerning the number of germs for the below mentioned systems of the distribution of entering air:

Figure 1: Operating rooms with ceiling outlets with the filters formicroparticles: 200 germs/m3 and more.

Figure 2: Operating rooms with the additional equipment for the stabilising of flow, such as the supporting flows, outlets withopenings or inclined shields: 70 to 150 germs/m3.

Figure 3: CG inlet ceiling: less than 10 germs/m3.

The detailed research carried out by the Doctor of Medicine, Prof.J. Beckert, Director of the Institute of Hygiene of the University inLübeck clearly shows that it is possible to maintain the requiredlevel of germs of < 10 germs/m3 in the operating areas. Inaddition, it was proved that the laminar discharge flow provides aneffective barrier against the unwanted importation of outdoor airimpurities into the wound area.

Measurement of the concentration of germs in the wound area

Apart from the high purity of air, the low velocity of the laminardischarge flow was appreciated by Professor Beckert as especiallypositive: „From the medical point of view, I have to highlight low velocitiesof air near patients that are beneficial in terms of thermal hygienicconditions.“

The inlet air exhaust system, CG type, is a well-proven structureused with excellent results in a number of operating rooms.

DimensioningThe size of the ceiling panel is determined according to the following criteria:- Total volume air flow available- Medical requirements resulting from various types

of operations - Value of contamination between the secondary emissions in

the room and the flow field

The dimensioning should allow for an outlet velocity of air of 0.25 m/s; this ensures the direction-defined, non-inductive,and steady flow of entering air – „laminar airflow“.

The dimensions of the ceiling panel for ensuring the operatingarea given in the following table are thus given. The specificvolume air flow amounts to 900 m3/h/m2. The air renewal inthe operating field for an hour is more than hundredfold.

The adjustment of dimensions, supply channel routing, arrangement of filters for microparticles, position of theoperating room lighting, and integration of the basic lightingaccording to the given layout should be agreed for eachproject individually.

The laminar discharge flow cannot be guaranteed in the caseof heating through the inlet ceiling due to physical reasons.

The CG ceiling panel dimensions depending on the volume airflow

In order to maintain the required constant temperaturein the working area of the operating table, werecommend that the temperature should be regulated bymeans of entering air.

The entering air temperatures should differ from theroom temperature by 1 to 2 °C.

With reduced temperatures of entering air, the outletvelocities lower than 0.25 m/s are possible.

A larger quantity of air entering the room through the laminarceiling for sterile air proportionally reduces pollution and thusalso the concentration of germs in air.

A respective enlargement of the ceiling panel in the operatingroom facilitates the unlimited performance of required typesof operations with certainty that the surrounding area is theclean area.

System structureThe inlet ceiling consists of the inlet air housing located in the intermediate ceiling, the connection for the supply airchannel, H13 filters for microparticles according to EN 1822(S/DIN 24 184), CG laminar ceiling for sterile air with theopening for the operating lighting tripod, and integrated basiclighting.

Design, materials and maintenanceThe pressure housing is made of stainless steel no. 1.4301or other material as agreed. The filter housing is equippedwith all elements required for securing and easy installation of filter elements and it is made of sheet metal painted withprime coating and powder synthetic varnish resistant to disinfectants or 1.4301 steel on request. The connectionto the pipeline of inlet air is rectangular with a flange or roundfacilitating the installation of air-tight shutting flaps (accordingto DIN 1946).

The CG laminar ceiling for sterile air is made of lowcombustible fabric made of plastic material and is connectedwith the precision stretcher frame made of aluminium profiles.

This complete part is also removable downwards, ensuringthus access to the whole interior of the air housing and the possibility to replace the filter and to carry outdisinfection.

The air inlet element – laminar ceiling for sterile air – can bedisinfected by both spraying and wiping.

The ceiling opening for the operating lighting tripod is fittedclose to the pressure housing.

Due to that the CG laminar ceiling for sterile air transmitslight, it is possible to integrate into the system the generaldiffused basic lighting pleasant for eyes and hygienicallyclosed. One of the advantages of the system is that it isspace saving.

The filter elements are tested according to EN 1822 (DIN 24 184). They are assembled from compact units withlarge filtration surfaces on the basis of the modern techniqueof the pleating of filter media. The elements are sealed withpressure screws in the test groove facilitating the testing, atany time, of the installation tightness as prescribed accordingto DIN 1946.

The arrangement of the filter pleat of the N ultrafilter in the V-shape pleating:

The purity of air is ensured by the application of the filters formicroparticles (HEPA). All the types of filters are based on thefilter pleats made of a high-quality filter medium made of glassfibres.
