CFM INTERNATIONAL,
A GLOBAL LEADERSince its creation in 1974, CFM International has become
one of the worlds leading suppliers of jet engines for commercial
airplanes. CFM engines set the industry standard for technical
innovation, reliability and cost of ownership.
Pioneers and visionaries
CFM is a 50/50 company of Snecma (Safran) and GE. It develops, produces
and sells the CFM56 product line, the best-selling jet engine in the history of civil aviationand a leader in the single-aisle aircraft segment. This long-standing joint venture,
unprecedented in the aviation industry, is nurtured by the complementary capabilities
and cultures of the two parent companies. Building on this success, GE and Snecma have
extended their partnership to the year 2040 and also kicked off an exciting new challenge:
to develop the LEAP engine, which will power the next generation of s ingle-aisle
commercial aircraft.
The CFM spirit
By capitalizing on the powerful expertise and the world-class industrial organization of its
parent companies, CFM consistently develops innovative solutions and delivers products
offering outstanding reliability. Customer satisfaction is an integral part of the companys
strategy and CFM delivers world-class services and optimized cost of ownership to keep
its customers satisfied. Along with the new LEAP engine, CFM has developed even more
cost-effective packages to support operators and keep CFM56 engines running efficiently.

TWO STRONG AEROSPACE
LEADERS BEHIND CFMThe work split for the CFM56 and LEAP engines takes advantage of
the technological expertise and capabilities of both GE and Snecma.
Each partner handles the production of all modules for which they are responsible,
then sends half of its production to the other partner. GE is in charge of the CFM56
core, comprising the high-pressure compressor, combustor and high-pressure turbine.
Snecma is responsible for the fan module, low-pressure compressor and turbine,
gearbox and accessories. The complete engines are assembled on a 50/50 basisby GE at its facilities in Evendale, Ohio (near Cincinnati), and Durham, North Carolina,
and by Snecma at Villaroche (near Paris, France).
GE profile
GE Aviation, a division of General Electric Company, is a world-leading producer of
commercial and military jet engines and components, as well as integrated digital, electric
power and mechanical systems for aircraft. Technological excellence, supported by
continuing substantial investments in research and development, has been the foundation
of GE Aviations growth and helps to ensure quality products for customers. GE Aviation also
makes aeroderivative gas turbines for marine applications, and provides aviation services.
Snecma profile
Snecma, a Safran company, is one of the worlds leading manufacturers of aircraft
and rocket engines and propulsion systems for civil and military aircraft, launch
vehicles and satellites. Snecma also provides a complete range of engine support services,
including fleet management for airlines, armed forces and other operators. To meet
customers expectations and anticipate their evolving needs, Snecma continuously invests
in research & development for new technologies. It counts on the proven expertise and
innovative capabilities of its talented people, plus support from parent company Safran.

CFM56,A LEGEND
IN AIRCRAFT POWERThe CFM56 engine family powers nearly 11,000 single-aisle commercial
jets produced by both Airbus (A320) and Boeing (737). The CFM56 is
the best-selling engine in the history of commercial aviation, a success
thats built on the continuing incorporation of new technologies and
continuous improvement in production processes.
Offering dispatch reliability of nearly 100%, the CFM56 is the most reliable engine
in its thrust class and is the best-selling engine in the world. Its also the worlds mostrobust aircraft engine, featuring unrivalled time on-wing (without removal for servicing).
The CFM56 product line covers a thrust range from 18,500 to 33,000 pounds, and offers
excellent environmental performance retention. It now powers aircraft for more than
530 operators worldwide. Although it will eventually be replaced by CFMs new LEAP
engine, demand for the CFM56 family is still strong. Production will continue until 2020,
and GE and Snecma will continue to produce parts for this engine until 2045 to
support its expected service life.
CFM56-5B PIP
Since entering service in October 2011,the CFM56-5B PI P (Performance ImprovementProgram) has demonstrated a 0.5% reductionin fuel consumption. The upgrade includeschanges to the core, with a new turbineand fan blades, compressor blades andguide vanes. The parts count has beenreduced as well, leading to a 1% reductionin maintenance costs.
CFM56-7BE
For the CFM56-7B engine, the exclusivepowerplant for Boeings Next-Generation 737,CFM introduced the CFM56-7BE variant inJuly 2011. Engine improvement (changes tothe low-pressure turbine and the core, includingnew turbine and fan blades, compressorblades and guide vanes) coupled with aircraftenhancements have reduced fuel consumption2% and maintenance costs by about 4%.

LEAP:THE NEW
BENCHMARK IN SINGLE-AISLE POWERPLANTS
The new LEAP engine combines the proven reliability of the CFM56
with state-of-the-art technologies, including 4th generation 3-D aero
design, lighter, stronger materials, an innovative low-emissions
combustor and much more.
Starting in 2016, the new LEAP engine will power the first three new-generationsingle-aisle commercial jets, the Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX and COMAC919.
CFM has forged LEAPs reliability, robustness and cost-effective maintainability
by leveraging the experience gained with the CFM56 product line. The LEAP engine
also incorporates innovative environmental technologies to significantly reduce
fuel burn a major concern of operators and meet future pollution standards.
CFMs ongoing focus on customer expectations and the environment have earned
the trust of a vast majority of aircraft manufacturers and operators from around
the world. More than 4,500 LEAP engines are already on order and CFM plans
to build 1,700 engines per year by 2019.
Supporting sustainable
development
Innovative LEAP technologies help
protect our environment. They generatea 15% improvement in fuel efficiency overthe current CFM56 product line, and willhave better fuel burn retention over the lifeof the product. Greenhouse gas emissionswill be reduced by an equivalent amount.Emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx)will be 50% under future standards, andLEAP will reduce noise by 15 decibelscompared to the current product line, giving the engine a significant marginversus future Chapter 14 regulation.

READY TO MEET THE
PRODUCTION CHALLENGE!CFM has planned ahead for LEAP production startup and
the transition from the CFM56 by optimizing current processes,
developing innovative technologies, streamlining the supplier
base and ramping up production capacity.
CFMs organization clearly reflects the solid partnership between its parent companies.
Each is in charge of manufacturing the components for which it is responsible, including
management of the associated supply chain.
Smooth-running supply chain
The LEAP supply chain is largely inspired by management methods proven on the CFM56
product line. It is also based on a careful selection of suppliers, including criteria such
as the ability to keep pace with the ramp-up in production, while meeting quality, cost
and on-time delivery requirements.
Planning ahead
Both parent companies are modernizing and expanding industrial facilities to be ready
for the ramp-up in CFM56 production and the transition to LEAP engine production.
CFM plans to produce 1,600 CFM56 engines in 2015, versus 1,450 in 2012.The changeover to LEAP engines will begin in 2016 and annual production should
reach 1,700 by 2020. Both companies have already invested heavily to meet these
goals, including new facilities to support the ramp-up in LEAP production.
