Roughly speaking, building a robot means using machines to realize similar functions to those performed by humans. For example, cameras are used instead of eyes, and motors are used instead of muscles. Human senses are realized with machinery, and the fluid movements of humans are recreated with machinery.

Robots in human form are, in a sense, the ultimate robot form, but since building such robots is still difficult, robots are currently being created with specialized functions, such as robots that clean or robots that can communicate … in this way, the use of robots in everyday life is spreading.

Recently, the use of cleaning robots in general households has spread. Initially, these robots cleaned by performing various actions randomly, but recent models are equipped with sensors that enable them to function by creating a map of each

room as they clean (vacuuming) to ensure that they clean the entire room without missing a spot.

There are also many robots being built for the purpose of working at disaster sites. For example, robots are being developed for the purpose of conducting searches. These include robots whose function is to find people trapped under buildings that collapsed in an earthquake, and robots that search underwater for survivors of boating and other water accidents.

I have recently been conducting research on nursing care robots. It is essential that nursing care robots are safe. When using a robot, neither elderly users nor their caregivers can be injured, and so it is important to verify robot safety. Rather than just randomly incorporate advanced technology, robots must be available to users at affordable prices. It is important that robots be built at costs that make it possible for users to purchase them inexpensively.

ロボットを作るということは、ざっくり言うと人と同じような機能を機械で実現するということです。たとえば目の変わりにカメラを使ったり、筋肉の代わりにモーターを使ったり、人の感覚を機械で実現したりします。人のなめらかな動きを、やはり機械で実現します。

人の形をしたロボットというのがある意味究極の形ですが、それはまだ難しいので、たとえば掃除をすることに特化したロボットや、コミュニケーションをすることに特化したロボットなどが世の中に出てきています。

家庭では最近、掃除ロボットが使われています。最初はランダムに、いろいろな動きをして掃除をしていました。最近では、センサーが付いて、部屋の中の地図をロボットが掃除をしながら作っていき、くまなく掃除をするような機能も備わっています。

災害現場で働くロボットもたくさん作られています。たとえば地震などがあったときに建物が倒壊して、その現場で生存している人を探すためのロボットや、水中に潜って生存者がいないか探索するロボットが開発されています。

私は最近介護ロボットの研究をしています。介護ロボットは安全であることが大切です。ユーザーである高齢者がロボットを使ったために怪我をしてもいけませんし、介護をする人が怪我をしてもいけないので、安全性を検証することが大切です。やみくもにハイテクを投入せずに、使える価格、安く買える価格で作るということが大切です。

moreover は、「そのうえ、さらに」、という意味で、前に述べたことに新しい情報を付け足したりするときに使います。ここでは、前の文で人型ロボットができることを述べた後で、「そのうえ、さらに」とロボットができることを述べています。moreover はとてもフォーマルな語ですので、日常会話では、also などが使われます。

colorful に more をつけると、～（なになに）より色彩に富んでいる、という意味になります。A is more colorful than B. で、「A は B より色彩に富んでいる」という意味です。２つの人やものを比べるときに使います。スペルの長い語の場合、colorful の前に more をつけて比較級にします。

Many robots capable of communicating with people are being developed. The key to this is voice recognition technology, as well as technology related

to how to assemble conversations based on the words the robot recognized. Robots that play games with elderly people are now available. These recognize certain actions and words but also communicate by speaking and singing songs spontaneously.

Some children have difficulty talking to other people. In such cases, sometimes it is possible for the child to talk to a robot instead, and so robots are now being used in therapy for such children.

Communication robots can also be seen or heard when you are out and about in the community. For example, communication robots are used to provide information and guidance in such facilities as shops and banks, as well as navigational guidance. Recent communication robots are connected to Internet cloud servers, and the content of the language they recognize and vocalize is being accumulated in databases so that the more they communicate, the more intelligent they become. These are some of the functions robots are now equipped with. A recent invention is the so-called smart speaker, which is able to recognize vocal commands and respond. Devices are also being made that specialize in this function.

In Japan, robot development is not limited to functions, and robots in human and even animal form are being created and communicating with humans. It might be possible to say that the value placed on robots’ ability to soothe or make people happy through such communication is a reflection of Japanese culture.

人とコミュニケーションを取ることができるロボットもたくさん開発されてきています。ここでキーになる技術は音声を認識する技術や、認識した音声に基づいて、どういう会話を組

み立てて行くかという技術です。お年寄りとゲームをするというロボットが作られていますが、動作や音声を認識したり、自分で発話したり歌を歌ったりしてコミュニケーションを取っています。

人と話しにくいというお子さんもいますが、そういった場合に、ロボットであれば話ができる・・・ということもあるので、そのような治療でも使われ始めています。

街中でもコミュニケーションロボットを見かけるようになりました。例えば、店や銀行などで案内をしたり、道を教えてくれたりします。そんなところでコミュニケーションロボットが使われています。最近のコミュニケーションロボットは、インターネットでクラウドサーバーにつながれていて、認識した音声や発話内容をどんどんデーターベースに蓄積していき、話をすればするほど賢くなるという機能が備わっています。最近ではスマートスピーカーといって音声認識をして返事する機能に特化した機器も作られています。

日本では機能に限定したのもではなく、人や動物の形をして人とコミュニケーションを取り、癒されたり、楽しく感じられたりするなどのロボットもあり、そのような面を大切にして作られたロボットがあるのは、日本の文化と言えるかもしれません。

Robots of the future will become increasingly intelligent, and I think they will gain the ability to perform dexterous and smooth movements very close to human movement. Robots in human form are called humanoids, and it may happen that humanoids are created that can become like friends living together with people in their homes.

At the present time, however, robot development is still at the stage of, for example, walking on two legs, or holding objects, and integrating functions, such as eye functions and hand functions—realizing all these functions together remains an extremely difficult challenge. Perhaps in about 20 years or so, the day will come when robots become people’s friends.

In this research field, I think that the final hurdle will be the hands. The hand contains many joints—so many, in fact, that the number of joints in the hand is not much different from the number of joints in the rest of the human body.



Certain parts of the brain control hand movements. The area of these parts is about the same size as the area of the brain that controls the movement of the entire body, which shows that a large portion of the brain is used for hand functioning and indicates just how extremely important hand function is within the human brain.

In addition to having many joints, the hand also has sensors for feeling things. The skin sensors are extremely fine-tuned and precise, so that humans can identify the kind of object or substance simply by touching it. We can identify something even it moves just a tad. We are equipped with a sense of touch that is extremely accurate and that has been honed extremely precisely.

Actually, realizing such functions in a robot is not an easy task. In the future, there will be not only robots in robot form but also equipment with robotic functions that humans “wear.” These are called wearable suits and are used to support human movement. It is believed that in the near future new technologies in this field will be developed that enable people to check their performance after performing an activity and answering questions such as “How was my body exercising?” “Did I run well today?” “Did I play a good game of tennis?”

将来ロボットは、どんどん賢くなっていき、人間に近いような器用な動作やなめらかな動作ができるようになると思います。人の形をしたロボットをヒューマノイドといいますが、ヒューマノイドのようなロボットができて友達のようになり、一緒に家で暮らすということもあるかもしれません。

ただ、現在は、例えば 2 足で歩いたり、モノをつかんだり、それを眼の機能や手の機能と統合することを実現するのはなかなか難しいのが現状です。あと 20 年くらいすると、みなさんの友達になる……そんな日も来るかも知れません。

こういう研究で最後に残るのは「手」の部分だと思います。手にはたくさんの関節があって、手の関節の数と、手以外の関節の数は、それほど変わりません。手を動かすことに対応した脳の部分がありますが、その部分は、全身を動かすことに対応する部分とほぼ同じぐらいの領域を占めています。このように、人間の手の機能は非常に重要で、脳の大きな部分を占めているのです。

手にはたくさんの関節があるのと共に、モノを感じるセンサーがあり、皮膚感覚が非常に細かく、精密に備わっていて、人間であればモノを触れば、どんな物であるかがわかります。たとえば、ものが少しずれただけでもわかるのです。非常に精密な研磨をするとか、非常に細やかな感覚が備わっているのです。

このような手の特徴を、実際にロボットで実現するのは容易ではありません。将来は、ウェアラブルスーツといって、ロボットの形をしたロボットだけではなく、ロボットの機能を持ったものを人が「着る」ということもでてくると思います。人の動きをサポートしてくれ、どんな運動をしたか、今日はうまく走れたか、うまくテニスができたかなどということを後で自分で確認できる……そんな技術も近い将来、出来てくると思われます。
