English translation

Good day, I am Mr Munro. I am a Gaelic teacher in the school where Donald and Kateare learning Gaelic. I also teach Calum and Nina. You will not hear too much fromme in the course except when there is a grammar point (or other matter) which needsexplanation.

I am here just now to tell you how our course complements the Higher course of theScottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). You will see here the outcomes for the two units.“Understanding Language” and “Using Language”. Each outcome has an abbreviationwhich will appear with every exercise in the course to inform you when you are fulfillingthem.

This outcome will mostly be assessed by reading texts. These texts will vary in style andform and the course will expose you to a wide range of these.

The learner will:

This outcome will mostly be assessed by listening texts. These texts will vary in styleand form and the course will expose you to a wide range of these. This outcome canalso be assessed by your responses to talking.

The learner will:

3 Understand detailed and complex written Gaelic literary texts by:3.1 Evaluating the effectiveness of the texts (UND3.1)3.2 Expressing a personal appreciation of the texts (UND3.2)

This outcome will be assessed by the reading and analysis of Gaelic literary texts. Whilstyou may focus on short stories and poetry, you may also look at novels and drama if youwish. You can work towards fulfilling this outcome through talking but your main focuswill be through writing.

The learner will:

1 Use detailed and complex spoken language in conversation by:1.1 Using relevant ideas and content (USE1.1)1.2 Applying grammatical knowledge (USE1.2)1.3 Applying knowledge and understanding of detailed and complex language (USE1.3)1.4 Conveying meaning to a sympathetic listener with accuracy (USE1.4)

This outcome may be assessed in several ways; your own everyday Gaelic conversation(which you must ensure you practise), formal talking assessments where you areengaged in conversation with a teacher or peer, and in presentations upon a specificsubject.

The learner will:

2 Use detailed and complex written language by:2.1 Using relevant ideas and content (USE2.1)2.2 Applying grammatical knowledge (USE2.2)2.3 Applying knowledge and understanding of detailed and complex language (USE2.3)2.4 Communicating with accuracy (USE2.4)

This outcome will be assessed mostly through the written Gaelic texts you create; thesetexts will be in a variety of forms and style. They will draw on your knowledge ofvocabulary and grammar in order to show your understanding of the language.

1.1.6 Using the glossaryThe glossary in this course is not a comprehensive dictionary. All students should sourcea modern Gaelic-English, English-Gaelic dictionary

Directions for use

As gender and case are vital to understanding Gaelic syntax and grammar, the followinghas been attached to the vocabulary within the course.

• nm - masculine noun

• nf - feminine noun

• nplu - plural noun

• adj - adjective

• av - adverb

• v - verb

• vn - verbal noun

• phr - phrase

• idiom - idiom

For nouns, the gender is indicated on the nominative/naming case of the noun. Somenouns are often used in their plural so this is also indicated. Irregular or interestinggenitive/possessive cases of the noun will also be indicated.

For adjectives and adverbs, these are indicated.

For verbs, the verb root, which is used to create all tenses is a separate entry from theverbal noun, which can also be used to create the infinitive.

For phrases, these are indicated. These will include a mix of the above.

For idioms, where a literal translation may confuse the learner, these are also indicated.
