An overview of #healthtech

at #CES2015

Here are some of the stands I visited at CES this year. I

had included discussions with the various company

representatives, however I can’t swear to their accuracy.

I have proposed some thoughts on use cases however

project specific thinking is required to see how the

technology can be strategically aligned and where the

consumer can benefit from this!

BASIS

Talked with Damon Miller marketing

director. Focus on latest device the

‘Basis Peak’ I actually own one and

am impressed (apart from the wrist

rash from extended use)

• Lots of hardware sensors, plan is

to offer a sequence of software

updates to maximize potential

• Automated sleep tracker – claims

it is 90% accuracy of a sleep lab

• Issue with locked down data but

Damon claimed that is ‘on the

road map’ so anyone’s guess

when I can get my data out

fitbit

An early and now established name

in wearable fitness. Latest product is

the ‘Surge’ This watch has multiple

sensors like the Basis and auto sleep

detection. Unlike Basis they have an

open API and SDK

• They are going ‘bling’ with a

jewellery partnership (similar to

Misfit)

• Very nicely designed and visually

engaging dashboard via the app

runtastic

Range of devices and apps focused

on fitness.

• Watch is water resistant for

swimming and has environmental

sensors such as temperature and

luminosity. Sleep sensor is not

automatic

• Integrates with apple healthkit

MISFIT

Wearable trackers with the key

differentiator on beauty, fashion and

style

• Very ‘bling’ partnership with

Swarovski

iFIT

Wearables and equipment for fitness

• Seems a big focus on the serious

athlete

• But workplace wellness and sleep

solutions for the ‘mainstream’ eg

the configurable treadmill desk

(pictured)

OMRON

Range of consumer devices and

monitors such as BP and Pulse Ox.

The data can now be synched with

their platform

• Open data that can be integrated

with other platforms

InBody

Their main product they were

demoing was the Body Composition

Analyzer

• Uses electrical impedance to get a

full picture of the body, broken

down into fat, water and muscle

mass

• Not for home use but a place in

corporate wellness and gyms

MASIMO

Focus was launch of consumer

wireless pulse oximeter, clinically

matched with their full scale hospital

oximeter

• Launch consumer product likely to

be the first component of a larger

ecosystem

• Offers HealthKit integration

QARDIO

Focus on a range of consumer cardio

products. Wireless blood pressure

and scales. I was intrigued by a

consumer ECG machine they are

currently seeking FDA approval for

• ECG offers ongoing Holter style

monitoring. 3 channel ECG

system and results transmit

wirelessly to the app

• Information can be shared with

your physician

• They are open to cloud-cloud data

sharing with the right partner

iChoice

Provide a range of the ‘usual’ health

monitoring devices. Key selling point

is on affordability. They promised an

open API and data.

• Of most interest was the ECG vest

although this is not yet FDA

approved. It was not available for

demo

iChoice ECG vest

Withings

A range of devices with wireless

connection, eg BP monitoring and

weighing scales with data uploaded

to a patient app and if required a

physician app

• Wearable watch is analogue style

with 8 month battery and can be

used for swimming

• The Aura mattress sleep sensor

(pictured) with lamp, tracks heart

rate, movement and breathing

combined with environmental

factors such as temperature and

luminosity, to uncover personal

insights

iHealth

A huge range of devices to track

vitals, sleep, blood glucose

• Open API and possibility for cloud-

cloud data sharing

• Easy to share with your doctor

• Point of interest was the range of

devices

tinke

A range of wearables but they had an

interesting ‘pressable’ to measure

health and stress in a given moment

• Measures breaths per minute and

heart rate variability (single

measurements)

• Interesting dashboard that can be

shared with familiy and friends.

• Easy to see you how you are

doing versus others in the

community similar to you

mental wellness

muse

An EEG headband that senses your

brain and gives biofeedback based

on your relaxation levels. Essentially

exercising your brain in focus and

calm. I own one and use it regularly

• Open API and possibility to tailor

an app for a pharma company

• Can also be used in mood

disorders, eg depression, anxiety

and ADHD, and potentially

conditions where stress is an

issue (that’s all of them I guess…)

muse headset

melo mind

To me offering seemed similar in

concept to muse (consumer EEG for

brain training) but very bulky in

design

• Scheduled launch 2015

• A range of music types that

change based on your brain state

• They claim it is clinically

validated.. I have not validated

that!

being

Another wearable, and it does track

your fitness but they claim to track

your mood (as well as sleep and

activity)

• Tracks Distress, Excited, Normal

and Calm

remote wellness

DOCTOR ON DEMAND

Remote service to gain access to a

physician via your smartphone

anytime, anywhere (in the US)

• Claim a high quality service with

only 20% of doctors who apply

able to be part of this service

• Easy and convenient with

apparent positive patient feedback

• Exciting and disruptive

innovation…just don’t call it the

UBER of medicine…

ADT & IDEAL LIFE

Partnership leveraging ADT’s

infrastructure and competency in

home security, focusing on remote

monitoring for the elderly

• A range of products and sensors

in the home

• Smart monitoring and data system

that understands context and

detects unusual changes.

• Combines data streams such as

front door being opened at a

certain time, lights turned on and

fridge opening to understand

safety and wellness

more interesting wellness

stuff

ALCOHOOT

Device attached to your smart phone

or tablet that detects your blood

alcohol level. Planned use for drivers

and quantified self

• Potential amongst rehab or

reduction patients if they can be

engaged. A number of pharma

companies have products in this

area. Opportunity?

My alcohol level...

Quell

One of a number of devices that

promise pain relief via sensory

stimulation!

• Needs clinical validation

• If validated this and similar

devices could be used in

conjunction with pain medication

PAXIE

Essentially an electronic tag for

parents to monitor their kids. Where

they are, have they fallen etc.

• May seem overprotective but I can

see particular utility in children

with particular conditions, e.g.

ADHD, asthma, epilepsy.

• You need 2 hands to remove so

they need at least need help from

a friend to get rid of it. Parent

notified if the device is removed

netatmo

Interesting suite of products to

measure environmental factors. Can

be combined with other wellness

parameters

• Weather station including indoor

temperature and air quality

• Of particular interest was the

product JUNE that measures

realtime sun exposure throughout

the day

thank you
