Promat TD Board

1. This approval relates to the use of Promat TD Board for the fire protection of I-shaped and hollow steel sections, structural tees, angles and channels. The precise scope is given in Tables 1 to 21 which show the thickness of Promat TD Board required to provide fire resistance periods in accordance with BS476: Part 21: 1987 of up to 240 minutes for differing sections and section factors (Hp/A) at various critical steel temperatures.

2. This certification is designed to demonstrate compliance of the product or system specifically with Approved Document B (England and Wales), Section D of the Technical Standards (Scotland), Technical Booklet E (N. Ireland). If compliance is required to other regulatory or guidance documents there may be additional considerations or conflict to be taken into account.’

3. The product is approved on the basis of: i) Initial type testing ii) Audit testing at the frequency specified in TS14

iii) A design appraisal against TS14 iv) Inspection and surveillance of factory production control v) Production surveillance under ISO 9001:2000

4. The data at a critical steel temperature of 550°C relate to beams and columns with fire exposure on one, two, three or four sides. The data at a critical steel temperature of

620°C relate to beams, supporting concrete floor slabs, with fire exposure on three sides, with the exception of the ‘dry board joint’ systems where a critical steel temperature of

550°C is used for that configuration. The data is applicable to Promat TD Board applied as a box protection to horizontal, vertical, flexural and compression members supporting loads up to the maximum design loads specified in BS449: Part 2. Separate consideration is required where this is not the case.

5. The data at critical steel temperatures of 300°C, 350°C, 400°C, 450°C, 500°C, 550°C,

600°C, 620°C and 650°C relate to beams and columns with fire exposure on one, two, three or four sides protected with the ‘bonded board joint’ systems. The data is applicable to Promat TD Board applied as a box protection to horizontal, vertical, flexural and compression members. The critical steel temperature is determined from BS5950: Part 8 depending on the load ratio applied to the member. Separate consideration is required where this is not the case.

6. The approval relates to on going production. Product and/or its immediate packaging is identified with the manufacturers’ name, the product name or number, the CERTIFIRE name or name and mark, together with the CERTIFIRE certificate number and application where appropriate.

Promat TD Board

Application technique Clip fix dry joint board system Installation method: Friction fit the correct length steel clips onto the flange tips at maximum 900mm centres

(maximum 600mm centres for the top flange of beams). The clips adjacent to the ends of each length of board are positioned maximum 100mm (minimum 20mm) from the end of the board.

Impale the Promat TD Boards onto the clip legs so that all board to board joints are tight butt joints.

Fit Promat TD non-return steel washers, 38mm diameter, onto the clip legs and push washers tight to the insulation face.

Fit Promat TD spiral steel screws to all web board to flange board joints. Screws are at 150mm maximum centres starting 75mm from the ends of each board length. Minimum screw length is 2 x cover board thickness less 5mm.

The limiting section factors for the protected steel section for Promat TD Board thicknesses from 25mm to 40mm and fire resistance periods up to 120 minutes are given in Tables 1 to 3 for

critical steel temperatures of 550°C and 620°C. Welded pin fix dry joint board system Installation method:

Stud weld steel pins, 3mm diameter, onto the flange tips at maximum 900mm centres (maximum 600mm centres for the top flange of beams). The pins adjacent to the ends of each length of board are positioned maximum 100mm (minimum 20mm) from the end of the board.

Impale the Promat TD Boards onto the pins so that all board to board joints are tight butt joints.

Fit Promat TD non-return steel washers, 38mm diameter, onto the pins and push washers tight to the insulation face.

Fit Promat TD spiral steel screws to all web board to flange board joints. Screws are at 150mm maximum centres starting 75mm from the ends of each board length. Minimum screw length is 2 x cover board thickness less 5mm.

The limiting section factors for the protected steel section for Promat TD Board thicknesses from 25mm to 60mm and fire resistance periods up to 120 minutes are given in Tables 1 to 3 for

critical steel temperatures of 550°C and 620°C.

Promat TD Board

Adhesive fix nogging dry joint board system Installation method: Fit 120mm-wide noggings of Promat TD Board between the flanges, bonded with Vicubond

adhesive, at 1000mm maximum centres. The thickness of the noggings is the same as the cover board thickness. For web depths of 500mm and above solid noggings or T-noggings made from the cover board thickness are fitted.

The Promat TD Boards covering the web of the section are fastened to the noggings with Promat TD spiral steel screws at 100mm maximum centres. Board joints must coincide with the noggings.

The Promat TD Boards covering the flanges are fitted between the web boards. The web board to flange board joints are tight butt joints fastened with Promat TD spiral steel screws at 200mm maximum centres starting 50mm from the ends of each board length.

Minimum screw length is 2 x cover board thickness less 5mm. The limiting section factors for the protected steel section for Promat TD Board thicknesses from 25mm to 60mm and fire resistance periods up to 120 minutes are given in Tables 4 and 5 for

critical steel temperatures of 550°C and 620°C. Adhesive fix nogging or stud welded pin adhesive board joint systems Installation method – nogging fix: Fit 120mm-wide noggings of Promat TD Board between the flanges, bonded with Vicubond

adhesive, at 1000mm maximum centres. The thickness of the noggings is the same as the cover board thickness. For web depths of 500mm and above solid noggings or T-noggings made from the cover board thickness are fitted.

The Promat TD Boards covering the web of the section are fastened to the noggings with Vicubond adhesive. The boards are held in position while the adhesive dries with steel wire nails at 150mm maximum centres. Board joints must coincide with the noggings. The adhesive is applied continuously and liberally to all board interfaces.

The Promat TD Boards covering the flanges are fitted between the web boards. The web board to flange board joints are bonded with Vicubond adhesive. The boards are held in position while the adhesive dries with steel wire nails at 400mm maximum centres. The adhesive is applied continuously and liberally to all board interfaces.

Minimum nail length is 2 x cover board thickness.

Promat TD Board

Options and other requirements Types of board: Promat TD Board is produced as a plain board, with a facing of glass tissue and with a facing of reinforced aluminium foil. The performance tables are applicable to all three types of board. Where the additional facings interfere with the mating surfaces of a bonded joint or nogging fixing, the facing must be removed over the area of the joint prior to the application of the adhesive. Steel preparation: The steel of the protected section must be wire brushed and degreased where adhesive is applied. Mitred joints: Bonded board joints between the Promat TD web and flange board may be mitred as an alternative to square butt joints. Noggings: For web depths of 500mm and above solid noggings or T-noggings made from Promat TD Board are fitted. The face of T-noggings is made from the same thickness as the cover board but the thickness of the return into the web should be at least 50mm thick. The board layers of solid noggings or T-noggings are fastened together with either Promat TD spiral screws or Vicubond adhesive. Maximum section size: The maximum size of beam or column to be protected with the Promat TD systems is 1000mm deep x 419mm wide. Maximum board size: The maximum board size for Promat is 2000mm x 1200mm.
