Support chariot for ITS & FMD services on the RB24 side
• Foreward– This presentation reports the current ideas to
solve the problem of moving the ITS services out of the PMD acceptance cone
– To fit in the existing installation procedure, the chariot supporting the ITS and FMD services is made of two, upper and lower, halves
– There are still 4 identified open problems, which will be described in details; therefore the present procedure should not be considered as a finalized design

● The minimum clearance with respect to the TPC thermal screen (~20mm),● the radial thickness of the services (~50mm), ● the presently estimated thickness of the conical section of the chariot
(30mm), seem to limit the opening angle of the services to 11.6º
11.6º

Movable section of the ITS & FMD service trays:• cylindrical during TPC sliding-in• conical when TPC is on Int. Point
Hinges of the cable trays1st problem: they require flexible pipes (plastic or metal bellows) and prevent tight fastening of cables
1 out of 11 cable trays per quadrant
2 lowered cable trays to allow the TPC sliding-in (room for the tools used for hanging ITS to the TPC)

Tools to link the base plane of the conical section with the plane of the TPC service wheel. It also lifts the outer end of the chariot.

Chariot installation – step 1
♦ In laboratory, for both the upper and lower half-chariots:►Services are assembled into their trays►Fixed section of the trays are assembled
onto the chariot cylindrical section ►Movable section of the trays are fixed to
the temporary cylindrical support

Chariot installation – step 2
♦ Both the upper and lower (not shown) half-chariots are mounted onto the ITS rails and slid through the TPC
♦ Services are then connected to ITS and FMD at the 1st patch panel

Chariot installation – step 4
♦ For both the upper and lower (not shown) half-chariots:►the conical section of
the chariot is slid in►with appropriate tools it
is bolted to the cylindrical section

Chariot installation – step 5
♦ Two adjustment tools with hinges, mounted on the conical section, are used to find the effective position of the TPC SSW and, then, to bolt the conical section to the SSW.●They allow to require
an SSW positioning accuracy of 2mm
CERN, November 25, 2003 – Technical Board
Chariot installation – step 6
♦ The service trays are opened and fixed to the conical section of the upper and lower chariots
♦ The temporay cylindrical support of the service trays are removed
CERN, November 25, 2003 – Technical Board
♦ The service trails are opened and fixed to the conical section of the chariot.2nd problem: the trails nearest to the horizontal plane clash with the C4 support of the ITS rails 1 trails out of 11
should be removed and the services redistributed into 10 trays; feasibility to be verified.

C4
CERN, November 25, 2003 – Technical Board
Chariot installation – step 7a♦ The third support-point of the
beam pipe is fixed by means of the usual 4 wires and collar3rd problem: the procedure to execute this step has not yet been completely defined. In particular:●Fixations of the wires to the
TPC face (which has good positioning accuracy) have to be agreed upon with the TPC group (for both the position and the compatibility with the ~400 N wire tension preliminarily requested by the beam pipe group)
●Space between two cable trays has to be provided for the wire feed-through
●Angles of the wires have to be agreed upon with the beam pipe group
CERN, November 25, 2003 – Technical Board
♦ The chariot of the beam pipe and the one of the vacuum valve are removed
Chariot installation – step 7b
CERN, November 25, 2003 – Technical Board
♦ The upper and lower chariots are raised in cantilever mode by using the tool (1), pushing onto the TPC SSW, and by exploiting the hinges included in the tools (2)4th problem: The stiffness of the TPC SSW has to be verified together with the TPC group
