Black Divaz

Black Divaz is a compelling documentary that follows Indigenous Drag Queens from around Australia as they embark on a quest to be crowned the Inaugural Miss First Nations Drag Queen. However, Black Divaz goes beyond the make-up, the glue guns and the glamour of drag to reveal the complexities of a world that is little known or understood. The pageant, hosted during Darwin Pride Week, showcases not just the incredible talent in the Indigenous drag community but also sheds a light on some of the bigger issues faced by Indigenous men and sistergirls who happen to love drag. Souls will be bared and connections made as one Queen makes history as she is crowned Australia’s Miss First Nation.

Connecting with Culture on Dja Dja Wurrung Country

Noah's Ark Inc Bendigo and Communities are privileged to have worked with members of our local community to create 'Connecting with Culture on Dja Dja Wurrung Country' - a short video which has been developed through our work in listening to the voice of Aboriginal families and sharing their experiences to influence system and practice change. This video is suitable for all ages and aims to provide local perspectives on creating welcoming services for Aboriginal families and children.

Healthy Spirits

Healthy Spirits is a therapeutic approach to working with Indigenous men through issues around family violence. The short video describes the program delivered by the Bendigo & District Aboriginal Co-operative.

His teeth, this place:

High above the ground stands Leanganook or Mount Alexander which means ‘his teeth’. We learn of the cultural significance of this place from Dja Dja Wurrung man Trent Nelson who shows us where the young men’s ceremonies were held with the nearby Taungurung people and of ‘Bunjil’, the Wedge-tailed Eagle and creator spirit. A short video from ABC Indigenous.

In My Blood It Runs

Ten-year old Dujuan is a child-healer, good hunter and speaks three languages. As he shares his wisdom of history and the complex world around him we see his spark and intelligence. Yet Dujuan is ‘failing’ in school and facing increasing scrutiny from welfare and the police. As he travels perilously close to incarceration, his family fight to give him a strong Arrernte education alongside his western education lest he becomes another statistic. We walk with him as he grapples with these pressures, shares his truths and somewhere in-between finds space to dream, imagine and hope for his future self.

In My Own Words

Raw, heartfelt, sometimes painstaking but often funny, In My Own Words follows the journey of adult Aboriginal students and their teachers as they discover the transformative power of reading and writing for the first time in their lives. This award-winning documentary is set in the small New South Wales town of Brewarrina and runs for 60 minutes.

Little J and Big Cuz

This Logie Award-winning animated series, featuring Miranda Tapsell and Deborah Mailman, follows the adventures of Indigenous Australian kids Little J and Big Cuz living with their Nanna and Old Dog. With the help of Nanna and their teacher Ms Chen they learn about culture, community and country.

The Bendigo Discovery Science and Technology Centre is running a hands-on virtual science workshop for kids aged 3-7, based on an episode of Little J and Big Cuz.

Niminjarra

Niminjarra is a story owned by Warnman people of the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia but shared with other language groups to the East. Two dissatisfied young men transformed themselves into snakes (“Jila Kujarra”) to make their way home from law ceremony to their mother in the west. This short video was made by Pilbara and Kimberley Aboriginal Media (PAKAM).

River Tour 2019

River Tour is an event supported by North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) for Traditional Owners of the region to share some time on Country. With Traditional Owner groups, CMA staff and scientists come together in a two-way knowledge exchange to better understand the cultural landscape, river and grassland management and get to know each other with some fun along the way. This short video is a snapshot of the event from April 2019 and the Q&A will go for 20 minutes.

Spear

Spear is Stephen Page’s directorial debut feature film telling a contemporary Aboriginal story through movement and dance.

Collaborating with dancers and creatives from Bangarra Dance Theatre, Stephen brought this visually stunning dance work to the screen. Through a unique collaboration between artists and filmmakers, this ground breaking film follows the journey of a young Aboriginal man Djali, as he tries to understand what it means to be a man with ancient traditions in a modern world.

From the outback of Australia to the gritty urban streets of Sydney, Spear is a poignant reflection of the continuing cultural connection of Indigenous people.

Tjawa Tjawa

Tjawa Tjawa is a Ngarti traditional story told in Kukatja language (with English subtitles) about a group of women who travelled from Roebourne in the northwest of Western Australia to the Great Sandy Desert south of Balgo in search of husbands. This short video was made by Pilbara and Kimberley Aboriginal Media (PAKAM).

The 2018 Reconciliation Week Speech

Tashara Roberts is an Indigenous Academic and cultural educator with many years' experience developing and delivering Indigenous

Cultural Awareness training. Tashara is currently working full-time in Indigenous Education and Engagement for La Trobe University.

Tashara is also a contemporary Indigenous conceptual artist whose practice includes photography, moving image, installation, mixed media, painting, sculpture and jewellery. Her work is sometimes subversive and politically charged; using visual culture to explore cultural and societal issues. Her multi-disciplinary practice often explores her Aboriginal heritage and/or shows the viewer what it is like looking at the world through her eyes.

The Australian Dream

The Australian Dream is a theatrical feature documentary that uses the remarkable and inspirational story of AFL legend Adam Goodes as the prism through which to tell a deeper and more powerful story about race, identity and belonging. It is also a deeply personal and comprehensive exploration of Goodes’ own journey which saw him retreat from everyday life only to return determined to rise above the ugliness he had been forced to confront. This is a feature length film made by Walkley award winning writer Stan Grant and BAFTA award-winning director Daniel Gordon.

Uncle Rick’s COVID rap

A COVID-19 rap for the mob by Dja Dja Wurrung Elder Uncle Rick Nelson.
