    Post-Graduate Diploma in Energy Management (PGDENM)

    Background to the programme : Government of India formulated a Vision of electrifying all villages by 2007 and

    electrification of house- holds by 2012. It is estimated that over 100,000 MW of additional capacity will be required by

    2012. It is also estimated that for building over 100,000 MW of additional capacity and associated transmission &

    distribution infrastructure nearly Rs.800, 000 crores of investm ents would be needed in the current and next plan

    periods.

    With the liberalization of power sector, private investors are participating in the development of power sector in India

    along with the Government and Public Sector Power utilities. Till now power utilities in India are technology driven

    organizations, implementing administrative directives from the state governments. With the entry of FIIs and private

    investors into the power sector, competitive environment emerged in Indian power sector. It is incumbent on State

    Power Utilities to apply business prudence in all decisions and actions. These power utilities are restructuring the

    organization into various strategic business units. With ever increasing pressure to improve performance, taking

    decisions in a competitive business environment requires different managerial skills. The official to be charged with

    the responsibility of managing the business units should have the general management skills. It is also necessary to

    develop the supervisory cadre who can take on the challenges of managing their role in competitive environment.

    School of Management Studies deemed it appropriate to offer a one-year P.G. Diploma in Energy Management

    under distance education mode to impart the knowledge and skills of business managers.

    To manage an organizational unit, an employee should have skills of a generalist apart from technical knowledge of

    the function he is assigned to manage. Important general management traits that a manager should possess include:

    Analytical ability, Creativity, Risk- taking ability, Planning and controlling, Communicating, Negotiating, Leading the

    team for achieving superior performance, and Developing and Maintaining cordial human relations in the unit.

    Therefore the programme is designed to develop these traits in the students.

    Objectives of the programme:

    To provide base level knowledge in the area of general management and

    To impart techniques and approaches for managing the resources in the most efficient and effective manner, with

    specific reference to Energy Sector.

    The Programme will consist of two semesters. There will be six papers in each semester, with each paper valued for

    100 marks. The courses are scheduled as follows:

    Term I: (January - June)

    DENM 411 : Management and Organisational Effectiveness

    DENM 412 : Accounting and Financial Management

    DENM 413 : Human Resource Management

    DENM 414 : Marketing Management

    DENM 415 : Quantitative Techniques and Research Methodology

    DENM 416 : Energy Management for Sustainable Development- (Paper-1)

    Term II: (July - December)

    DENM 421 : Business Law including Electricity Act 2003

    DENM 422 : Decision Support Systems and Management Information System

    DENM 423 : Tariff Structure and Analysis

    DENM 424 : Project Development and Management

    DENM 425 : Energy Management for Sustainable Development- (Paper-2)

    DENM 426 : Project Work

    Brief introduction of the content of the courses

    DENM- 411 : Management and Organisational Effectiveness: it introduces the latest concepts and techniques of

    managing organizations in competitive environment such as risk management, IT in management, quality

    management and management control systems. It also familiarizes the basic organizational processes to bring about

    organizational effectiveness and change.

    DENM- 412 : Accounting and Finance for Managers: The basic purpose of this course is to develop an insight of

    postulates, principles and techniques of accounting and utilization of financial and accounting information for

    planning, decision- making and control. It also acquaints the students with the broad framework of financial

    management in competitive environment, deals with latest topics such as financial risk management, value-based

    management and financial modeling.

    DENM- 413 : Human Resource Management: In a complex world of industry and business, organizational efficiency

    is largely dependent on the contribution made by the human resource of the organization. This course is to sensitizestudents to the various aspects of managing people and to create an understanding of the various policies and latest

    practices of human resource management.

    DENM- 414 : Marketing Management: this course familiarizes the basic concepts of marketing function and deals

    with latest techniques such as customer relationship management.

    DENM- 415 : Quantitative Techniques and Research Methodology: This course familiarizes the students with some

    basic statistical and linear programming techniques, focus however, is in their applications in business decision-

    making. This course also introduces the basic techniques in conducting management research.

    DENM- 416 : Energy Management for Sustainable Development- (Paper-1): this course introduces the basic

    postulates in energy economics, environmental dimensions, organization for energy management, and deals with

    global scenario on energy management, Role of International agencies on energy, Policy initiatives in India for energy

    management, and related issues, at national level and state level.

    DENM- 421 : Business Laws including Electricity Act and Taxation: The course facilitates the students in

    understanding basic laws affecting the operations of a business enterprise. This course also deals with importantlaws specific to energy sector such as Electricity Act, 2003.

    DENM- 422 : Decision Support Systems and Management Information System: in today?s competitive business

    environment, the organizations should leverage the power of information technology for improving information system

    and design the architecture for decision support system to help the management in strategic decision-making. This

    course is designed to introduce the concepts of Management Information System and develop the basic

    understanding of the decision support system of the artificial intelligence for business organization.

    DENM- 423 : Tariff Structure and Analysis: the manager is expected to be proficient in designing the tariff relating to

    the services rendered by the organization. This course provides thorough understanding of the tariff making and

    analysis. It also familiarizes the procedure for filing of returns with regulatory commissions.

    DENM- 424 : Project Development and Management: project development and management is a multi-disciplinary

    function in any organisation. A manager is expected to understand the concepts and techniques used from

    conception of a project till project is commissioned for commercial use. This course is designed to provide basic

    understanding of concepts of project management and approaches used in practice for developing and managing

    projects under different situations. It also focuses on managing various risks in project?s life cycle.

    DENM- 425 : Energy Management for Sustainable Development- (Paper-2): This course would equip the students

    with knowledge and skills needed in managing energy for sustainable development, by developing non-conventional

    sources of energy and using efficiency, conservation and conversion technologies for organizational use at a macro-

    level. Techno-economic aspects of various operating decisions taken by organizations for complying with regulatory

    mandates will also be discussed.

    DENM- 426 : Project Work: In order to gain the experience of applying academic knowledge/ management

    techniques in real life situation, the student is expected to undertake a project on any managerial issue/ problem in

    his/her organization under the guidance of a senior manager of his organization or a management expert to be

    approved by programme coordinator. The dissertation duly authenticated by the guide should be submitted to the

    University by the end of the academic year for evaluation.

    Programme Delivery:

    Centre for Distance Education of the University of Hyderabad will arrange to supply the study material at the

    beginning of each semester. In addition the students can seek clarification on academic matters through e-mail.

    Contact Classes and Management Development Programmes

    The contact classes will be held for about 10 days at the end of each semester just before the beginning of the

    semester-end examinations. In order to develop soft skills for the students, General Management Programmes with

    modules such as Leadership development, Finance and Accounts, IT skills etc. will be conducted during contact

    classes. These are held on non-residential basis at the University campus, Hyderabad. However the outstation

    students are given accommodation in the university campus on a nominal charge as per rules of the University. In

    addition the participation in these classes / programmes will carry a weightage of 20%, in the over?all assessment of

    the students.

    Managers of the Energy industry and (e) Visits to the industry

    Target group

    1. Any graduate with work experience in energy industry (Manufacturers of equipment for Power industry,

    manufacturers/ suppliers of fuel to the energy industry; power generating/ transmitting/ distributing companies) staff in

    regulatory commissions and staff working in government departments connected with energy would benefit

    immensely from this programme.

    2. Any graduate seeking a career in energy industry.
