CPHS MISSION STATEMENTTo prevent animal neglect and cruelty through education and enforcement while providing a safe haven and finding forever homes for those in need.

CPHS VISION/VALUES STATEMENTTo meet the needs of the animals in our community through communication, compassion, and conviction.

People enter the field of animal care because of their love for animals. Being a Humane Officer certainly fits this idea, but comes with a tough job description. Some situations you cannot even train for. It can be a very difficult job with many emotional, physical, and very technical demands. Many times the public is unsure and unaware of their authorities and duties that can vary vastly across the state.

The Humane Officer is a sworn officer appointed by the courts of the county to enforce animal cruelty laws. They are trained by the academy and complete updates every two years. Our on duty officers with CPHS have the same authority as any police officer in the state while on duty and operating in the scope of their job. In our area they work very closely with other police agencies to help them with animal issues. Humane Officers

must cover vast areas and do their best to be as efficient as possible.

Our laws in Pennsylvania are a bit behind the times. Interestingly, in New York committing certain animal cruelty crimes is a felony, whereas in Pennsylvania it is not a felony offense.

The community’s support in understanding the very difficult job our Humane Officers have, and help with updating legislation surrounding animal cruelty and welfare is very crucial. Their job is to enforce the laws, which as said before are extremely out dated. Our officers are on call 24/7 and often are requested to assist surrounding counties in their animal emergencies. We are very fortunate to have our Humane Officers in our area serving the hundreds of animal cases they work on each year.

The Central PA Humane Society announces Eats for Treats, a fundraiser everyone can participate in just by going out to eat! Participating restaurants will be creative on certain days of the month to raise money for our four-legged friends. The restaurants will be competing for the CPHS Fire Hydrant Trophy that they will get to proudly display the following month should they be the top donator that month.

See the participating restaurants below. An updated flyer is available monthly on our website under the Eats for Treats Contest. Please show to your waiter or waitress at restaurants indicated to affirm their help.

Should you not be able to fill your belly and support your favorite restaurant that month, fear not! Go onto the Eats for Treats web page on our website and make a donation to our fur babies attached to the Top Dog Restaurant you love. Your donation vote will not only be added to the restaurant’s tally for the Fire Hydrant Trophy that month, but there will also be many tail wags in thanks from our fur babies too!

100% of the proceeds from Eats for Treats will go to help the animals at the CPHS. For additional information email Becky Felton, Director of Outreach and Development at bfelton@centralpa humane.org.

UPCOMING EVENTSPAWS IN THE PARKSATURDAY, JUNE 3Paws in the Park is a fun event to involve the whole family, and help all the animals at the Central PA Humane Society at the same time! Kids of all ages will enjoy the World Famous Disc-Connected k9s Frisbee show. It will held Saturday June 3rd at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg, rain date Sunday June 4th. There will be a total of three shows that day from 10am to 4pm.

Lawrence Frederick, the owner of the Disc-Connected k9s, travels around the world with his world champion shelter frisbee dogs. All of the Disc-connected k9 shows that day will be in honor of his late uncle David W. Troxell. His uncle was a great supporter of the CPHS and lover of animals. David had rescued quite a few animals in his life, and asked for donations in his memory be given to our furry friends at the shelter.

This is the story of how Paws In the Park began! Lawrence decided to do more than just make a donation. He reached out to us here at the CPHS and asked if we could help him coordinate a dog flying, frisbee catching fundraiser! His hope was to bring as much of a donation as he could to our shelter pets in his uncle’s honor. After reading the show description below found on the Disc-Connectedk9s website, k9frisbee.com, we were very excited to say the least.

All kids are welcome, two and four legged! Some of the four legged kids last year enjoyed watching the shows too, almost as if to say, I can do that! Altoona Honda will be a key sponsor again this year handing out frisbee’s for the kids. Something else new this year will be a frisbee golf course. It

promises to be a fun filled day so mark your calendars! Make a monetary donation to the dog box that day for our shelter animals, and be eligible for more fun activities, and giveaways during the shows! We are now looking for sponsors to help make this a community event for everyone to enjoy just by making a monetary donation.

We want to say thank you to everyone who helped make this event a huge success, and hope

we can count on your support again this year. From our sponsors, volunteers, vendors, attendees and especially the Disc-connected K9s we were able to raise over $10,000 for our furry four legged friends.   What a fantastic day!

Last year’s sponsor’s also included Gate Sponsor: Paul Davis Real Estate. Shelter Sponsors: McLaughlin Oil, Austin’s Texas Hotdogs, ATS Pro Diesel, ATS Transmission, Coldwell Banker Town & Country Real Estate, Edgar Snyder & Associates. Celebrity Dunking Booth Sponsor: Happy Tails. Activity Sponsors: Stultz Real Estate, Reliance Bank, Metzger Animal Hospital, Monarch Cleaners, Greenwood Pools & Spas, Ebensburg Animal Clinic, Monarch Cleaners, Styles by Paul, Dicks Pharmacy, Shellco Seafood, G.B. Wineland & Son, Mid State Tool & Supply. In Kind Sponsors: Fiore True Value Hardware, Hlbg Animal Hospital, Altoona Mirror, Roaring Spring Bottled Water, WTAJ TV, Stevens Company, Meadows Frozen Custard.

If you happened to have missed Paws in the Park in 2016…make sure you don’t miss June 3rd 2017!

Presley is a Beagle mix, approxi-mately seven years old, who was found in October on Bed-ford Street in Hollidaysburg by our Humane Officer, Paul Gott-shall. This poor little guy was carried into us because he was unable to put any weight on his back legs. Our Veterinarian determined Presley had some-thing compressing his spine, most likely caused by being hit by a car. Dr. Morgan unfortu-nately thought Presley would be paralyzed for the rest of his life. He put him on meds to de-crease the inflammation, and thought massaging his hips at least would decrease his pain.

Every once in a while we find that special volunteer who will spend the time to help one of our animals — that volunteer is Chuck LaMark. Chuck came in

daily to massage Presley and to spend time with him. He would hand feed Presley letting him know that no one was giving up on him. Chuck built a cart for him to get around easier. Presley sped around in the yard when he had his cart attached to him. The cart relieved pressure on his nerves which gave him the ability to act like a puppy.

After about two months Presley started to try and put weight on his back legs. Low and be-hold Presley now walks out to the front yard all on his own four legs! Thanks to a caring volunteer, Presley is back on his paws! Presley is still a little wob-bly, but he is a happy boy.

Further good news – Presley was adopted and will be going to his forever home soon!

The Central PA Humane Society held their annual Chili Fest & Wings fundraiser on January 28th this year and what a big night it was! Held in the Grand Ballroom at the Bavarian Aid Society CPHS sold out of the 500 tickets days prior to event.

The total raised this year was just over $16,000 which was well over the nearly $10,000 raised in 2015. This event continues to grow in popularity and this year there were many new contestants who created some tasty chili and spicy wings for the attendees.

Chili contestants were: The Bavarian Café, Cristi Waltz, Ed’s Kountry Kitchen, Jack’s Grubb Shack, Jim Ott, Joe & Mara Murgo, Paul Lang (Lang & Sons Construction), Marzoni’s Greenwood, Mike Daversa, Steele Pier Hot Dogs, Tammy Wolfe (Wolfe Art) and Wendys (E Plank Rd)Wings Contestants were: Altoona Parrot Head Club, Chewy’s Pizza, Jack’s Grubb Shack, Jim Ott, KFC Plank Rd and the US Hotel Tavern.

The celebrity judges Mayor Matt Pacifico, WTAJ’s KC Kantz and Karina Cheung took their judging responsibilities seriously and voted their winners as:Judges Choice chili: 1st The Bavarian Café, 2nd Marzoni’s Greenwood, 3rd Cristi WaltzJudges Choice wings: 1st Altoona Parrot Head Club, 2nd US Hotel Tavern, 3rd Jim Ott

The attendees also voted on their favorites:People’s Choice chili: 1st Jim Ott, 2nd Paul Lang, 3rd The Bavarian CaféPeople’s Choice wings: 1st Jim Ott, 2nd US Hotel Tavern, 3rd Altoona Parrot Head Club

CPHS would like to give a huge big thank you to their sponsors. Title sponsors The Bavarian Aid Society and City Beverage continue to provide their support year after year. City Beverage donated some wonderful unique items for a silent auction which was very popular. Some fantastic gift baskets were donated from community businesses and generous donors and CPHS cannot thank their monetary sponsors for their generosity in giving to this event for the shelter and the animals.

The attendees were treated to entertainment from DJ Toby and live band Shallow 9 played several sets which had a big crowd up dancing the night away to some great music. Reviews from the night have been very favorable with everyone going home feeling full and having had a night of fun!

CPHS would like to thank the organizing committee for their hard work arranging this event, and also a big, big thank you to all the volunteers who give up their time so generously time and time again. Next year’s event is already booked in for January 27th 2018. Keep this date free for another fun filled night!
