Central Oklahoma is in its third year as a member of the Mid-Amer-ica Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II insti-tutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first or-ganized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of be-ing one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts champi-onships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and ten-nis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercol-legiate Athletic Association to the Mid-Amer-ica Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain member-ship in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

the mid-ameriCa interCOllegiate athletiCS aSSOCiatiOn State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retire-ment in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commis-sioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought member-ship back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Mis-souri Southern and Missouri Western be-gan competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was re-placed by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006,

NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invi-tations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebras-ka-Kearney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which left the conference with 14 schools.

sChool nICkname“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. ProduCTIon CredITs

Cody whITe

In his second year at the helm of the Central Oklahoma program is Cody White, who served in an interim capacity in 2014 before assuming the reigns last summer.

White became the pro-gram’s first-ever full-time

assistant coach in 2012 and helped lead the Bronchos to the NCAA Division II national championship in 2013.

He played a key role during a sensational sea-son that saw the Bronchos win a school-record 51 games en route to capturing the school’s first women’s national title in any sport.

UCO claimed the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association crown in its first year in the league and went a perfect 9-0 in NCAA post-season play to take the national champion-ship, clipping Kutztown 5-2 in extra innings in a thrilling finals contest to end a 51-11 campaign.

Cody and head coach Genny Stidham were selected the Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association after the season.

White was named interim head coach on Aug. 9, 2013 after Stidham took over at Texas Woman’s and went on to lead the Bronchos to another outstanding season in 2014.

UCO finished runner-up in the MIAA regular season standings and earned an at-large bid into the national tournament, finishing the season 41-17.

White came to UCO after serving as assistant baseball and softball coach at Edmond Memorial High School. He was on the baseball staff for four years, helping the Bulldogs reach the state

Cody guided the Edmond Stars American Le-gion team to the state tournament in his one year as head coach and he helped lead the Edmond Memorial American Legion team to a pair of state runner-up finishes during two years as an assistant.

White played baseball at North Central Texas College for one year before spending his fi-nal three seasons at Southern Nazarene.

He was a two-time Sooner Athle t ic Conference Gold Glove Catcher for the Crimson Storm in addition to earn-ing All-SAC honors.

Cody, who re-ceived his bachelor’s degree from SNU, is married to former UCO softball stand-out Hillary Brandt and they have two children (Lillie and Brooks).

Jon hunTer

In his second year as an assistant coach at Central Oklahoma is Jon Hunter, who came to the Bronchos in the fall of 2013 from Edmond North High School.

Hunter helped lead the Bronchos to a 41-17 record and runner-up finish in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2014, with UCO making a third straight trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Jon was an assistant basketball coach for the Huskies from 1999-04, helped with baseball from 2004-13 and was a softball assistant from 2008-13.

Hunter helped lead the ENHS baseball squad to the 2012 Class 6A state championship and he was the interim head coach in the fall of 2012 when the Huskies captured the Class 6A state title.

A native of Clinton High School, Hunter played collegiately at St. Gregory’s before graduating from UCO. He and his wife, Traci, have two daughters (Abby and Halle).

keely bobeCk

Serving in her second season as an assistant coach at Central Oklahoma is former Division I pitcher Keely Bobeck.

Bobeck helped lead the Bronchos to a 41-17 record and runner-up finish in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2014, with UCO making a third straight trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Bobeck is a product of Drippings Springs (Texas) High School who went on to pitch two years at Navarro College and two years at Texas Tech. She had a 1.19 career earned run average at Navarro and threw four shutouts her first season with the Red Raiders.

Keely was a pitching instructor for six years after graduating Texas Tech and came to UCO in January of 2012 when her husband, Nick, took over as head football coach for the Bronchos. They have a son (Tucker) and daughter (Miller).

kalynn sChroCk

Helping out the Central Oklahoma program as a student assistant coach this year is Kalynn Schrock, who ended a sensational career with the Bronchos last season.

Schrock came to UCO after playing two years at Division I Tulsa and helped lead the Bronchos to 92 wins the past two seasons as a dominating force in the pitching circle.

She went 34-6 with 312 strikeouts and a 1.69 earned run average in 2013 as UCO finished 51-11 and captured the Division II national championship. Schrock was a second-team All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and All-Central Region selection after setting single-season school records for wins, strikeouts and innings pitched (265 2/3).

Kalynn was named Most Valuable Player of the Division II World Series after finishing with a 1.00 ERA and 40 strikeouts in four games, fanning 14 in a 5-2 nine-inning finals victory over Kutztown.

Schrock threw two perfect games and put together a 25-9 record last year, finishing with a 1.58 ERA while striking out 264 in 222.0 innings. She was a first-team All-MIAA and All-Central Region pick in addition to earning second-team All-America honors.

Kalynn had a 59-15 career record to set a UCO career record for winning percentage (79.7) and she ranks in the top five in four other all-time categories -- strikeouts (second with 576), saves (third with seven), wins (fourth) and innings pitched (fourth with 487 2/3).

A prep star at Choctaw High School, Schrock has a daughter (Rylie) and is completing work on her education degree.

lenty of returning experience has Central Oklahoma looking to stay among the NCAA Division II elite in 2015, with the Bronchos expecting to once again challenge for the national championship.

UCO returns nine players -- including seven position starters -- from last year’s 41-17 team that made a third straight trip to the Division II playoffs and the Bronchos hope to add another national title to the one captured in 2013.

“We feel like we can be as good as any team out there,” second-year head coach Cody White said. “We have a lot of players on this team who know what it takes to compete at the highest level and we’re look-ing forward to seeing how good we can be this season.”

UCO only has to replace its starting shortstop from last year in the every-day lineup, though filling the void left by an All-American pitcher will be a tough challenge.

Leading the large number of returners are a pair of All-Region perfomers -- senior outfielder Kaylee Brunson and junior second baseman Ally Dziadula, the team’s top offensive sparkplugs.

The Bronchos also have back five second-team All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association performers in senior outfielder Devyn Frazier, junior catcher Tori Collet, junior third baseman Ashton Smith, junior outfielder Brooke Zukerman and sophomore catcher Ashleigh Tramel.

Senior first baseman Emily Ditmore is another return-ing starter and junior pitcher Nicole Brady has plenty of experience in the circle, so it’s easy to see why UCO is poised for a stellar season.

“We’re very fast again this year and will continue to be aggressive,” White said. “We added some more power and that should help us drive in more runs, so we feel good about our offense. The key will be our pitching, but I’m confident in what our staff can do.”

Here’s a look at the 2015 Bronchos: CaTCher

A great situation for the Bronchos with the return of junior Tori Collet and sophomore Ashleigh Tramel, who shared starting duties last year. Collet hit .317 with 22 runs batted in and was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Year, while Tramel batted .350 with 10 doubles. fIrsT base

Senior Emily Ditmore hit .327 with 13 doubles, six home runs and 44 RBI while starting every game here last year and gives UCO great stability. Freshman slugger Bre Davis adds depth and should see action.

2015 season ouTlook

P

Kaylee Brunson

seCond baseUCO features one of the best in NCAA Division II in junior Ally

Dziadula, who led the team in most offensive categories last year and is a main cog in everything the Bronchos do with her overall ability. Rookie Kourtney Tanner can help out if needed. shorTsToP

The only position where the Bronchos are looking for a new starter, with talented freshman Morgan Heard expected to step in and become

an immediate mainstay on both offense and defense. Sopho-more Ally Dziadula is also available.

ThIrd baseJunior Ashton Smith took over here early last season and quickly proved what she could do in hitting .325 with 11 doubles, six homers and 29 RBI and even

more is expected of her in 2015. Freshman defensive ace Kourtney Tanner provides depth.

ouTfIeldThe Bronchos are loaded in the outfield with the return of

all three starters for the second straight year. Senior Kaylee Brunson, who already owns school career records for runs scored and stolen bases, is an All-America candidate in center field. Senior Devyn Frazier must overcome a knee injury that knocked her out late last season, but is looking to be back in left after hitting .353 with 27 RBI a year ago. Junior Brooke Zukerman holds down the job in right and will be

an offensive force after batting .331 with 10 homers and 47 RBI last season. Freshman Shelby Carel will push for playing

time and junior Rachel Harper is also available. PITCher

Maybe the biggest question mark on the team simply because of the unknown. The Bronchos earned two shutout wins over intrastate rival Rogers State in their next outing, getting two home runs and seven runs batted in from Hannah Justus in a 10-0 first-game rout before Brady tossed a five-hitter in a 7-0 second-game shutout.

UCO returned to league play March 21 by clubbing 24 hits in 14-1 and 8-0 run-rule romps over Nebraska-Kearney, stretching its winning streak to 13 straight while improving to 21-7 overall and 10-0 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State ended that long streak the next day with a 4-1 first-game win, but the Bronchos took the nightcap 9-1 behind an 11-hit attack.

Central went on the road the next weekend and swept twinbills from Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri, moving to 26-8 and 15-1.

UCO split a non-conference doubleheader with Oklahoma Christian on April 1 and then outscored Northeastern State 35-9 in a four-game

series sweep as Brooke Zukerman went 11-for-12 at the plate with eight RBI.

The Bronchos improved to 33-9 with two wins over Midwestern State to finish off the home schedule and then split a road doubleheader with Emporia State, win-ning the opener 3-2 as Kaylee Brunson went 4-for-5.

Schrock threw her second perfect game of the season the next day in a 4-0 first-game win over Washburn before the Ichabods came back to take the nightcap 5-3.

UCO split a doubleheader at Southern Nazarene and then ended the regular season with four more conference road games, winning the first three before falling to Mis-souri Western in the finale to finish 22-4 in MIAA play.

The Bronchos blanked Lindenwood 3-0 in the opener of the conference tournament as Schrock tossed a three-hitter and Ashton Smith drove in two runs, but losses to Missouri Western and Emporia State eliminated UCO.

Central earned an at-large bid into the national tourna-ment and Tori Collet had five hits and five RBI to spark a 7-5 nine-inning victory over Emporia State in the first round of the Central Regional in Mankato, Minn. UCO fell to Southeastern Oklahoma 5-4 in the next round and then was ousted by Emporia State in finishing 41-17.

Central Oklahoma overcame a rough start in earning a third straight trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament and reaching the 40-win plateau for the fourth time in school history last season.

The defending national champion Bronchos opened the season ranked No. 1, but lost three straight games in the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. and were 3-5 after eight games before rebounding strong.

UCO put together eight- and 13-game winning streaks en route to a 41-17 finish and came in second in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association before going 1-2 in the Central Regional.

“We got off to a slow start and struggled some early, but we ended up having a really good season,” head coach Cody White said. “We did a lot of good things and played really well at times, though we just weren’t as consistent as we needed to be.”

The Bronchos dropped a pair of one-run decisions to ranked opponents in starting 0-3 at the Desert Stinger Tournament before winning their final two, capped by a 3-2 victory over Minot State on Brooke Zukerman’s two-run home run and Emily Ditmore’s game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

UCO lost two of the first three games the following weekend at the 8-State Classic to fall to 3-5 before end-ing that event with three straight wins, outscoring those opponents a combined 19-3.

Central wrapped up its early-season tournament sched-ule the next week by going 3-2 at the Rattle Invitational and was 9-7 going into the start of conference play.

The Bronchos outscored Lindenwood 16-1 in sweep-ing a doubleheader to open the MIAA schedule and came back the next day for 9-0 and 5-0 shutouts of Lincoln as pitchers Kalynn Schrock, Nicole Brady and Amanda McClelland gave up a combined seven hits.

UCO continued its league dominance the next weekend, outhitting Missouri Southern 21-7 in an easy doubleheader sweep before beating Pittsburg State 7-3 and 6-2 to improve to 17-7 on the season and 8-0 in the conference.
