Introduction
Hello Central Carolinas members, associate members, and any potential members that may be reading this newsletter! We have had a couple email newsletters but this is the first official newsletter. If you are a potential member we hope you consider joining our chapter. While many of us like azaleas our interest does not end there. It carries into camellias, Japanese maples, rhododendrons, woodland plants such as trilliums, day lilies, and much more. Interests of our current members ranges from the typical gardener to those interested in various ways of propagation (creating more plants for free), and even hybridization (creating new plants). Some of us know only the common names and some of us can speak the Latin names. We all hope to learn from each other and do not be intimidated if you feel you do not know much. Chances are you know more than you realize. Some of you may be wondering what that orange thing is in the top left corner of this page. I thought the same thing about 5-6 years ago. Well it is a deciduous azalea. I knew a good bit about plants but had never seen an orange azalea. Yes, azaleas can be orange. They can also be yellow. If you are more advanced in your knowledge we hope you consider joining our friendly group and help teach those interested in learning more.
Chapter History…
A lot has happened in a short amount of time. Our first interest meeting was October 6, 2013. The second meeting on November 10, 2013 covered some business items as we discussed requesting affiliation with the Azalea Society of America (ASA). On December 12, 2013 our request was approved to become an official chapter of the ASA. On December 27, 2013 we received an offer from Larry Mellichamp, Director of the UNCC Botanical Gardens, for us to hold our meetings at the McMillan Greenhouse and adjoining classroom facility.
Meeting Place and Time
For the foreseeable future our meetings will be held at UNCC. They will typically be every other month, on a Sunday, and around 2pm. We will attempt to hold meetings at consistent times but because we are new times may vary in the first year. There may be more activities in the spring and summer due to plants being in bloom. Attendance is not mandatory but encouraged as we hope you will enjoy the meetings. Plenty of parking is available but requires explanation. This will be explained at the first meeting. Just make your way to the McMillan Greenhouse at 2:00pm on January 26 and you will be directed where to park. Click here for directions.
Join us: Come to one of our meetings. If you decide you would like to join, membership is $30 annually. You receive a free azalea, quarterly issues of The Azalean magazine, chapter newsletters, and access to plants not commercially available at discounted prices. Meetings can range from general discussions, workshops, guest speakers, cuttings exchanges, and field trips to nurseries or parks and gardens. You will also have access to private member gardens.

About UNCC Botanical Gardens
The meeting place is a huge perk for us as we will have an area to hold workshops and just outside is the 3 acre Susie Harwood Garden and the 7 acre Van Landingham Glen. McMillan Greenhouse has orchids, carnivorous plants, desert plants, and many other tropical plants.
Admittance at the UNCC Botanical Gardens is free of charge.
The Van Landingham Glen is a woodland garden showcasing over 1,000 species of plants native to the Carolinas. It also features hybrid rhododendrons and native azaleas. The many wonderful native azaleas and rhododendrons are present thanks to UNCC staff and the Rhododendron Society Chapter that used to meet at UNCC.
The Susie Harwood garden features many hardy ornamental plants with year round interest. There is a small pond, waterfalls, a winter garden, an Asian garden, and a garden featuring native plants for the home landscape is currently being installed.
The gardens are open 7 days a week and are a wonderful place to take a stroll. My wife, Beth, and I have visited several times over the past few years to walk the meandering paths. You can find out more about the UNCC Botanical Gardens at http://gardens.uncc.edu/ .
Hours for outdoor gardens: Open 7 days a week during daylight hours.
Hours for Greenhouse: Mon-Sat: 10am-3pm and Sun: 1-4pm

Meeting on January 26, 2014
We will be hosting a workshop on growing deciduous azaleas from seed. We will be explaining technique perfected by J Jackson and Lindy Johnson of Appalachian Native Plants. They have developed a technique which maximizes root growth, which they call rapid propagation. We will have seed and a demonstration on how to sow the seed. From this point we will explain how to grow on the azaleas. This will include technique on care for the seedlings and things such as fertilization. A few members will grow this seed on for the chapter. These plants may be used in a future plant sale or given to members in a year or two. Perhaps we may even take a field trip to their nursery in the future. For more information on Appalachian Native Plants visit http://www.appalachiannativeplants.com/.
2014 ASA Convention in Charleston, SC
The annual ASA convention will be held in Charleston, SC of this year. The information sheet on this convention and the registration packet are on pages 5-7 of this newsletter. The convention this year will cost a little more than the average convention because of Charleston being a tourist town. Highlights of the convention include public and private garden tours, very inexpensive plant sales of varieties not commercially available, meeting other plant enthusiasts, and learning more about growing azaleas!

We are pleased to announce we will have Don Hyatt giving a presentation on America’s Treasure: Our Native Azaleas! The rich flora of North America boasts seventeen species of native deciduous azaleas. Although some have been grown widely in Europe or used in hybridizing since the 1800’s, these native azaleas are becoming increasingly valued as adaptable landscape plants in our own country again.
In this multimedia presentation, Don Hyatt will try to give attendees an appreciation for the range of flower color and form of our native azaleas as they exist in the wild. He will discuss a few tips on how to tell the various species apart as well as specific cultural requirements to assist home gardeners. He will also try to give people an appreciation for the scenic wild places where these species often grow.
Don’s presentations are typically fast paced and informative. Although illustrated with many lovely photographs, don’t be surprised by the occasional humorous anecdote or Photoshop image. Don hopes his enthusiasm for native plants and wild places will encourage others to join with him in preserving this beauty for future generations.
Please note the meeting time for this meeting will be 3pm. This is due to another group meeting earlier.
Biography:
Donald Hyatt has been gardening at his family home in McLean, VA, since early childhood. He holds a BS degree in Horticulture with a double major in Biochemistry, and a Master’s degree in Computer Science, all from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The shady garden he has created over the past 60 years emphasizes azaleas, rhododendrons, and wildflowers.
Don has received a number of awards for his work with rhododendrons and azaleas including both the Silver Medal in 2002 and the Gold Medal in 2012 from the American Rhododendron Society. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Azalea Society of America in 2009. He has served on the national Boards of both organizations and is the current Director for ARS District 9.
Although professionally a mathematics and computer science teacher in Fairfax County, VA for 33 years, Don has maintained a life-long interest in plants of all kinds. Now retired, he enjoys having more time to pursue his varied horticultural interests including gardening, photography, botanical illustration, and the study of native plants in the wild.
