To start the year, centrED’s annual dance day has proven to be a motivating event for Year 11 & 12 students. Whether students want to pursue dance as a subject, or as a career, they should find the day inspiring and educational. The day consists of • Technique classes in a range of genres• A special industry presentation• Tips on how to successfully manage the

SACE dance curriculum

Note Participants must wear appropriate dance gear. They are also expected to understand safe dance practices and dance class procedures.Teachers hold the duty of care and must supervise their attending students at all times. The day is busy, so we ask that all students and teachers bring their recess and lunch as there will not be the opportunity to leave the grounds.

“I really enjoyed the contemporary class, it gave me a chance to work on my weaknesses and have fun.”

“I learnt to choreograph using techniques I hadn’t ever before.”

Fascinated by the world around him and full of determination, Grug embarks on an epic journey to reach the rainbow that always seems just beyond his grasp. Will our grassy little friend find what he’s looking for? And what fun and adventure will he have along the way? An epic story of displacement, loss, and adapting to different worlds.Chloe and Hassan are under suspicion for stealing money while feeding the class Axolotl. Sent outside to work out who’s responsible, the unlikely pair find they have something in common. Each of them has been forced by their parents to leave their respective homes and face life as the new kid at school. As their personal histories are revealed, Chloe hears the incredible first-hand account of a 12-year-old boy who’s travelled alone, thousands of kilometres across land and sea, for a better life. Is the discovery of Hassan’s back story enough to save him from Chloe’s desire to protect her position in her new-found friendship group?

Written to be spoken aloud like Homer’s poem, Alice Oswald’s universally lauded Memorial strips the narrative from Homer’s Iliad, concentrating on personalising the deaths of the 215 soldiers named in the epic.Directed by Adelaide’s Chris Drummond, Memorial sees one of the leading actresses of her generation, Helen Morse, bring her decades of experience to Oswald’s transforming poetry with a new score by Golden Globe nominated UK composer Jocelyn Pook for a live ensemble. On a magnificent set designed by Michael Hankin and lit by Nigel Levings, Circa’s Yaron Lifschitz will create haunting physical shapes with 215 performers drawn from the Adelaide community.Marking the centenary of the 1918 Armistice, Memorial is an engaging insight into the use of words, theatrical technique, and history, and is suitable for senior students.

An aspiring actress stands on the 50-foot ‘H’, looking down at the lights of Los Angeles and the dream factory known as Hollywood. She has only ever wanted one thing: to be a star.Winner of the inaugural Made in Adelaide award, Joanne Hartstone’s ‘play with music’ takes audiences on a nostalgic journey through the Golden Age of Hollywood from a whole new perspective.

An isolated volcanic island emerges from the ocean. A seed floats in from distant shores, finding purchase on the rock. A beetle, clinging to driftwood, washes ashore. Time and currents bring more and more new arrivals, by accident and design, to create a rich and varied home.Songs for Those Who’ve Come Across the Seas is a prog-rock cabaret show exploring the beauty and strength of diversity. Featuring original songs, fabulous projected imagery and Slingsby’s immersive and thought-provoking theatre making.

EMERGENCIESAdelaide Festival Centre’s Front of House staff are trained in emergency response procedures. In the event of an emergency please follow the directions of the Front of House attendants.

AUDIENCE ETIQUETTEAdelaide Festival Centre is a professional working arts complex with four theatres, including Her Majesty’s Theatre on Grote Street, and a variety of exhibition spaces. On arrival for a performance you will be greeted by Front of House staff or the Education Coordinator and escorted to your seats in the theatre or workshop venue(s).Whilst in the auditorium, students are expected to comply with behaviour appropriate for a live performance. Please advise students to • Refrain from taking notes until during interval or after the show • Switch off all electronic devices • Only drink water in the theatres and workshop spaces • Save talking and sharing observations until interval and after the show

DUTY OF CAREThe Education Coordinator can act in many different capacities including; facilitator, supervisor of activities or provider of extended learning resources. All teachers are reminded that they have a duty of care to supervise students at all times. centrED follows the recommended DECD teacher to student ratio:

• 1:6 for Pre-school – 2 • 1:10 for Years 3–7 • 1:15 for Years 8–12

Teachers’ duty of care can act in different capacities including supervision in small and large groups, instructing, observing from a distance or participating in the activity.A minimum of two sanctioned supervisors/teachers are required at all times. For learning experiences with a fee, supervisors will be admitted free at least up to the ratios outlined above or as stated in centrED Teaching & Learning Program Guidelines.

BEFORE YOU VISITCheck: • The time and date of your visit

– aim to arrive 20 minutes early • Which venue you are attending and the best

way to access it (access has changed with the redevelopment!)

• The duration of travel requirements and best drop-off point

• If tickets are available by post or at the venue (BASS)

• That you have the correct contact information on the booking form

PREPARING YOUR STUDENTS FOR LEARNINGBefore bringing your students to see a show or take part in a workshop, we recommend that you prepare your students for their learning experience, this may be by running pre visit activities from the teacher resource kit for the show, or talking them through themes, styles and expectations. Students who are prepared for their visit are likely to be more engaged and have a deeper learning experience.
