SAP MONITORING WITH CENTERITY

Centerity offers a wide range of monitoring options in order to cover any SAP products and enhance – to

provide end to end visibility to the entire SAP business environment:

Applications

SAP CCMS (Computing Center Management System)

SAP customers can use Computing Center Management System (CCMS) to monitor, control, and configure

their SAP System. The alerts are displayed in a tree structure in the alert monitor, and assigned a severity

and a color (yellow for a warning, red for a problem). CCMS provides customers with the current status of

their SAP system and process alerts here.

Centerity has an RFC NetWeaver client installed on the monitoring system, The RFC API enables

establishing RFC communication between an SAP systems and external systems. In this manner, Centerity is

able to collect any alert / metric from CCMS notifying according to the CCMS alert color, and go as far as

managing CCMS thresholds within Centerity itself, centralizing all monitoring functions into one

management application.

Whilst any CCMS MTE (Monitoring Tree Element) is available for use, simply by specifying its location in the

CCMS structure, Centerity offers best-practice monitoring that is relevant for all SAP applications, providing

customers over 30 best-practice metrics for monitoring. Some of our selected metrics include:

1. ABAP Dumps: If an unhandled exception occurs while an ABAP program is executed the ABAP

runtime environment triggers an ABAP runtime error. The execution of the program is terminated

and a detailed error log (aka “Short Dump”) is created and saved in the affected system. Centerity

is able to retrieve all dumps in the last X time, as well as monitor amount of Shortdumps/min.

2. Aborted Jobs: Listing all terminated jobs, or jobs exceeding the given time limit.

3. Background Utilization: Average usage of background work processes of an application server.

4. Failed Updated: Queries “ErrorInUpdate” for any incorrect update requests.

5. Dialog Response Time: The dialog response time consists of the period of time from the request of

the dialog to the dispatcher through the processing, to the ending of the dialog in the dispatcher

and the transfer of the data to the presentation layer. Indicates performance problems in the SAP

system.

See full SAP CCMS datasheet for additional best-practice monitors.

SAP Host Agent – Java monitoring

SAP Host Agent can accomplish several life-cycle management tasks, such as operating system monitoring,

database monitoring, system instance control and provisioning. Any SAP Standard host will include the SAP

Host Agent, allowing monitoring of all necessary Java components as well as other metrics.

Using Centerity Agent, Centerity can directly use the SAP Host Agent installed on the SAP system to collect

data. Monitoring samples include:

1. Java PAS Availability: Using process list function, validating J2EE server and Watchdog processes

are running as expected (“GREEN” status).

2. Java SCS Availability: Using process list function, validating Message Server, Gateway and Enqueue

Server are running as expected (“GREEN” status).

3. Java Alerts: By using Get Alert Tree function, it is possible to gather performance data for

monitoring, examples include: object utilization, active web sessions and long running threads.

Java Management Extensions (JMX)

JMX™ is used to instrument, manage, and monitor all SAP Java server components (services, interfaces,

libraries) and applications. The JMX™ infrastructure is provided by the JMX Adapter Service, which in turn

uses the SAP-JMX library. The SAP-JMX library provides an almost complete implementation of the JMX™

1.2 core APIs. Using the JMX connector for remote clients based on RMI-P4, Centerity is able to connect to

any SAP Java application and monitor all required monitoring information.

SAP Java monitoring via JMX includes: Java threads, garbage collection, memory heap usage and more.

SAP CCMS for Java

Please review “SAP CCMS” listed above for full-method-detail. SAP CCMS contains “SAP J2EE Monitor

Templates” including several performance metrics for SAP Java instances, for example:

1. Process Table: Information about processes of the Java instance: CPU Usage, Process type, status.

2. Garbage Collection: Information about Garbage Collections of the Java instance: Memory released

by Garbage Collections per minute (15-minute average), memory utilization, duration of the last

complete Garbage Collection in seconds and more.

3. Long Running Threads: Number of threads with too long a runtime; a thread is regarded as long-

running if it exceeds the value defined in the profile parameter service - By default, this time is 20

seconds.

4. Sessions AS Java: Querying the number of web sessions, browser sessions, EJB sessions.

5. Memory: Java Heap memory usage, memory utilization of java objects and more.

SAP Solution Manager

Centerity is capable of fully integrating to Solution Manager with multiple methods:

1. Solution Manager Notification System: Centerity is able to gather data from many types of

ticketing systems using their own notification module. In Solution Manager Service Desk,

specifically, it is possible to receive all new SOLMAN incident data, using notifications, passively

sent into Centerity for alerting.

2. SNMP Traps: Send incident data to Centerity Monitor, triggering an alert in monitoring. Centerity is

capable of filtering SNMP trap data using the content, sources, IP Addresses and more.

Learn more about Centerity SNMP Traps.

Database SAP HANA

SAP HANA provides a driver for connecting applications to the database with the ODBC application

programming interface (API). Centerity Monitor uses this method, installing an SAP HANA driver on the

monitoring server.

Using this method, Centerity has developed with SAP COIL a technique allowing DBAs to execute any

desired query from SAP HANA database, as easily as writing it down without any additional configuration.

Any query can trigger an alert using warning and critical thresholds.

Example: Centerity BSM (Business Service Management) for SAP Hana with Hadoop

Page 7: Centerity Monitor End -to End Monitoring forPlease review “SAP CCMS” listed above for full-method-detail. SAP CCMS contains “SAP J2EE Monitor Templates” including several performance

Whilst any query is possible, Centerity keeps up with SAP HANA best-practice monitors with the help of SAP

HANA administrators, providing customers 30 best-practice metrics for monitoring. Some of our selected

metrics include:

Alerts: Checking Hana Alerts table, discovering any new alert that is added to the table.

Crush Dumps: Querying HANA DB Statistics table to see if there are alerts on new crash dump files

creation.

Replication Errors: Querying m_service_replication table for newly added replication errors.

Disk Space: Checks the amount of space used by data / logs.

Expensive Statements: Check m_expensive_statements table for statements that exceeded given

duration.

Top 10 Tables: Checks top 10 tables according to their size.

Query Runtime: Checks a specific query runtime and notify if runtime exceeds thresholds.

See full SAP HANA datasheet for additional best-practice monitors.

In addition to the SAP HANA monitoring, Centerity provides a SUSE certified solution for SUSE Linux

Enterprise Server (SLES) monitoring, the default installation for SAP HANA – running on thousands of SAP

HANA instances. For monitoring Linux, specifically SLES, Centerity offers multiple methods: Linux SNMP

(agentless) and Centerity Linux Agent for SUSE. The Centerity recommended method is the agent method,

as it grants the ability to track and monitor advanced customizable information from the operating system.

See full Linux datasheet for additional best-practice monitors.

SAP ASE (AKA SAP SYBASE)

SAP Sybase ASE provide an ODBC driver for connecting applications to the database for all major OS

distributions. Centerity Monitor uses this method, to tap into the database and query all major best-

practice monitoring requirement using ASE’s ability to gather monitoring data. In the SAP ASE case, it is

possible to query any data, although the following would be the recommended best-practice service

checks, guided by Sybase recommendations.

Cache Buffer Pools: The number of buffer pools within the cache, queried from “monDataCache”.

Connection Successful: Creates a login request to the ASE, to validate availability.

Last Backup Failure: Querying “monOpenDatabases” table for the state of the most recent

database backup.

Lock Waits: Returns list of locks that are being held by processes / objects, and the time in seconds

the lock request has not been granted.

See full SAP Sybase ASE datasheet for additional best-practice monitors.

SAP & BIG DATA

SAP HANA & Hadoop

Combining the SAP HANA in-memory processing power with Hadoop’s ability to store and process huge

amounts of data in any structure – allows the maximum extraction value from Big Data. The aggressive data

growth over the past several years has created an immediate need for faster processing systems, such as

the SAP HANA database technology.

Centerity has introduced monitoring support for all major Hadoop platforms, starting from Hadoop’s raw

Apache architecture using JMX (Java Management Extensions) to extensive monitoring in the major

Hadoop distributions APIs.

Cloudera: Cloudera Manager platform provides users with a REST API module, accessible via HTTP calls

using Cloudera Manager role based web-users. Centerity uses this method to discover all available API

metrics according to the currently installed Hadoop applications. In addition, Centerity provides a basic

best-practice for Cloudera distribution default applications - See full Cloudera data-sheet.

Hortonworks: Hortonworks open-source Hadoop distribution uses Ambari manager for all Hadoop

application management. Apache Ambari has a default REST API module, requiring basic API authorization

via HTTP calls using Ambari web-users. Centerity uses this method to discover all available API metrics

according to the currently installed Hadoop applications. In addition, Centerity provides a basic best-

practice for Ambari manager - See full Hortonworks data-sheet.
