Senior Center News, Activities & Entertainment

Arts & Crafts—March 13— Please join us the 2nd Tuesday of each month to make different arts and

crafts projects for FREE by hand, donations are welcome to help keep the program going. Please sign up

at the Pine River Senior Center front desk or contact Brenda Jones at 884-5415 so we know how many

will be attending.

Adventures in Dining - On the 3rd Thursday’s of the month the seniors go to different restaurants

around the area. Durango, Farmington, Pagosa Springs, & Ignacio. Please call to make reservations.

Bayfield Food Bank Donation - Friday, March 9 - On Birthday Celebration Day, the Senior Center

will be collecting non-perishable, unexpired, unopened packages of food for the Bayfield Food Bank.

Monetary donations are also welcome and can be dropped off at Bayfield Town Hall or given to Brenda at

the Senior Center.

Birthday Celebration - Friday, March 9 at noon - Please join us on the 2nd Friday of every month

for our birthday celebration.

Blue Star Moms - Donations for our troops are being collected for the Blue Star Moms of Durango.

There is a drop box at the Senior Center for donated items. Support our troops and this great

organization!

Box Tops & Labels for Education - The Senior Center is collecting Box Tops & Labels for Education

to benefit our local schools. Please drop them in the plastic container on the front counter.

Brenda Marshall’s Card Making Class - Tuesday, March 27 - Brenda from the Pine River Public

Library hosts a “Stamping Up”! card making class 4th Tuesday of each month from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00

a.m. Cost is FREE; we will make 2 greeting cards each. Call 884-5415 with questions.

Bridge Club - Tuesdays at the Senior Center from 9:00 a.m.. - 11:30 a.m. Please call Joe Mozgai at

884-0928, or call 884-5415 for more information. New members are always welcome!

Caregivers Group - Meet the second Friday of each month at 10:00 am till 11:00 am at the Senior

Center. This group will provide support for those who are caregivers needing help or want to know more

about caregiving. For more information please call Elaine Stampo 259-0122.

Community Quilt Group - Tuesday, March 13 All quilters & people with homemade projects are

invited to come join them on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This group is open to all who are interest-

ed in sharing the joy of homemade items. Please contact Shelia at 970-884-2372 for further information.

Easter Celebration - Wednesday, March 28 - Please join us for Easter Celebration and wear your

craziest hat for crazy hat day. There could be a prize for the best hat.

Senior Center News, Activities & Entertainment

Health Checks—Friday, March 9— San Juan Basin Health will be here on the 2nd Friday of each

month to take blood pressures and check blood sugar for free. For more information please call

Christian at 970-335-2076. He will be here at 9:00 am for the people that need to be fasting blood

glucoses. He also performs lipid tests (cholesterol and triglycerides). Any senior who wants testing should

fast after 9 pm the night before--no cream or sugar in their morning coffee or tea, no breakfast, etc.

Mexican Train Dominoes - Join us on Tuesday Game Days, Wednesdays and Fridays after lunch for

a fun game of dominoes. Anyone can join and it’s free. Can’t beat free entertainment!

Pine River Public Library - Friday, March 30- The library will be here the last Friday of each month with

books, movies, & audio books available for check out. Please call Brooke at 884-2222 ext. 514 for more infor-

mation or requests.

Pine River Senior Board Meetings - Held on the 2nd Wednesday of every other month. The 2018

dates are January 10, March 14, May 9, July 11, September 12 and November 14. Everyone is welcome to join

us at 1:00 p.m. in the conference room.

Pot Luck Tuesday’s - Tuesday, March 6 - Join us on the 1st Tuesday of each month to have pot luck.

Please bring a dish to share.

St Patrick’s Day Celebration - Friday, March 16th - Come join in the fun of celebrating the Irish, don’t

forget to wear your green.

Veterans’ Services - Friday, March 30 - Richard Schleeter with the La Plata County Veterans Service’s

Office will be at the Senior Center at 10:00 a.m. to visit with any veterans that may have questions about

what benefits and services are available to them, please call 970-759-0117 for more information.

Fitness & Exercise Programs

Stretch & Flex is a balance and coordination based exercise class that takes place every Wednesday & Friday from

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. for FREE - Reserve your spot today!

Yoga - Tuesday at the Pine River Library Community Room 9:00 am, Thursday 8:00 am at the Library;

Colleen Theobald will guide participants through Hatha Yoga Class. The focus will be on core strength, body toning,

proper alignment and breathing techniques. This class is also held on Tuesday 6:00 p.m. at the

Recipe Corner

Hot Spinach Artichoke Dip

2 (8-oz) pkgs. Cream Cheese, Softened 1 (10-oz) pkg. Spinach, thawed, drained & chopped

1 1/2 c Mayonnaise, real 1 1/2 C Parmesan Cheese, grated

1 Clove Garlic

1 (14-oz) can Artichoke Hearts, drained & chopped

Beat cream cheese & mayonnaise with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Add remaining ingredients; mix well. Spoon into 9 in pie plate or quiche dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until very lightly browned. Garnish with chopped tomato if desired. Serve with crackers or vegetable dippers.. Makes 16 servings. (2T)

Wedding Punch Punch: 1sm box lemon Jello 1qt. Ginger ale, chilled 1 pt. hot water 1 bottle almond extract 2 cans frozen lemonade 1 (32-oz) can pineapple juice, chilled Dissolve Jello in hot water. Cool. Mix lemonade with water as per directions on can. Combine all ingredients and chill thoroughly. Pour in punch bowl and float frozen ice ring on top. Two recipes of punch will serve 75—80 people. Ice Ring - 1 jar maraschino cherries—mint leaves 1 can pineapple tidbits - 1 can mandarin oranges & Punch recipe. Pour punch over fruits and mint that have been arranged in a mold. Freeze and float in punch bowl.

January 10, 2018 Sr. Board Meeting

Minutes read from November 8, 2017, meeting, no changes, motion to accept as read, passed, accepted.

Tony: Treasurer's Report: We spent $250 for a custom pool table cover to be delivered the last of January, first of February. For the whole year, Sr. Center financials ended up with $324.15 more than we started the year with, includes interest on CDs. Motion to approve financial report, approved and accepted. IRS: 2013-2014 approved for tax exempt status. No filings for 2014 or 2015, but they do have 2016, so as of now no tax exempt status. We can refile for both years which would cost $800 with explanation of why we did not file, or do nothing. No 501-3C now. Do we need status? Discussion regarding whether we need status at all. Motion made that we will not file with IRS, approved, passed.

New Business: Blue Sky Seniors minutes from 2010 pr inted out by Brenda. Keeping for historical value. Motion made to keep, passed.

Old Business: Discussion dur ing November meeting regarding directional signs for bazaar, and Town was going to look into directional signs for the Sr. Center. Chris says study is complete, and directional signs will be pricey. It will be done in a phased approach. We will be in charge of bazaar signs. Phyllis says we will try to get the bazaar signs donated by Alert Signs. Maybe a banner, too?

Town Business: Chr is: Town Board is re-evaluating position on marijuana. Comprehensive Plan moving along, compiling info, team will come back in March and take more public comments. Overlay road work, crack seal and patching to take place this summer. Taking bids for 4th of July fireworks for the Town because the fire dept. isn't going to do it anymore. Liability insurance costs too high, crews short staffed, etc. 24 acre parcel discussion for recreational purposes funded by Dept. of Local Affairs, working on master plan, will ask for our input. Charlene: Question to Chris regarding crosswalk near elementary school. Pool etiquette discussion. Brenda will make sign for pool players regarding hours not to play – no play during lunch activities.
