Brothers,

October was a busy month. Thanks to Brother Peter Ingerick for chairing our first sub sale and to everyone who participated the Friday night before building the subs. The sale was a success with all but 6 regular subs being sold.

Also, the annual Art Auction Gala was a success. Thanks to Rick Unver-richt for chairing the events and PGK’s Helmut Brokamp and Gray Gagnon for sharing their previous experiences and mentoring Rick. I also want to thank PGK Ed Fairbairn for handling the food requirements. This year’s event featured guest artist John Stanisci, a professional illustrator for Mar-vel and DC Comics for over 15 years. Thanks also to all the brothers and the K.C. Ladies who volunteered to help with the event.

For this coming month we have the Past Grand Knight Dinner on 11/7 and the Memorial Mass on 11/18 to remember brother knights, KC ladies and squires who have passed away. Please plan to attend this Mass at the council home. There is also another sub sale on 11/13 (set up) thru 11/15 and a 1st Degree on 11/04, a 2nd Degree on 11/10 (both at the John Paul 1 Columbian Center and a 3rd Degree on 11/21 at Council 7922 Burke, VA.

Please remember to say a prayer on Vet-erans Day for all of our veterans living and deceased.

Win with the Caps Now we move onto hockey and to root on the Capitals, we will have Win with the Caps following every council business meeting. When the Caps are playing on a non

-degree Wednesday meeting night and they win, someone will win $10.00. Come to the meeting, root for the Caps and win. Game-day every Sunday Watch all the NFL Sunday games every Sunday at the lounge. The lounge will open at 12:30PM and remain open until the completion of the 4 o’clock games. If you are a football fan or in a fantasy league, we have you covered.

Birthday Night & Karaoke Saturday November 28th we will celebrate the September, October, November and December birthdays with a free dinner for those members and/or their spouses who have or had a birthday during those months. The menu will include the popular John Paul I Salad Bar, Breaded Pork Chop, Scallop Potatoes, Apple Sauce, Rolls % Butter and of course Birthday Cake for dessert.

The dinner is open to everyone, even if your birthday is not in one of the celebrated months. Please make your reservation prior to Wednesday November 25th. Following the birthday dinner, join us in the lounge for Karaoke as we introduce our new and upgraded Kara-oke system. Chili Contest – Dec 6th Get ready for our annual Chili contest and see if your chili can come out on top and win the Chili of the year award. Banquet Room Rentals I have started to receive requests for use of the Banquet Room during 2016. As always we try to give current members priority in using “their Home’ but it doesn’t always work that way. If you have plans to use the Ban-

quet Room in 2016, please book now. Council Lounge to Close on Saturdays Over the past year, the House Committee has been monitoring the decline in lounge attendance

on Saturday nights. A majority, well practically always, of the time the only ones at the lounge on Saturdays are the DM and the bartender and many times only the DM. The House Committee has now concluded that there is just no membership interest in coming out to the home on Saturday unless there is an event sched-uled. Therefore, the lounge will be closed on Saturday nights unless we have an event such as Birthday Night, Karaoke, Blackjack Tournament etc. Also, the House Committee will begin to develop events for Satur-day Night, like steak dinner, Texas Hold’em, movie night, special sports event etc. so that we have at least

one Saturday event a month. If anyone has any suggestions for a Saturday event, please for-ward them to the House Committee. New Year’s Eve We have decided that we will do a very casual New Years Eve at the council home. The lounge will be open, we will have bar snacks, favors and noisemakers and a midnight toast.

Tables will be available for any size group and/or card playing. TV’s will be tuned into Football games and of course all the different channels at midnight so that you won’t miss anything going on at the “Big Apple”. While the lounge will have your favorite beverage at our normal low prices, BYOB is allowed. We invite all

Brothers,

Fall is in full swing and so are the many Programs that our council has coming up for the month of November. First we have our re-scheduled Past Grand Knights Dinner on 7 November. Its an enjoyable evening that will center around the roasting/induction of Brother Lou Byers. This event is open to all and I encourage you come on out. Next up is our second Sub-Sale of the season which will start with the making of the Subs on Friday 13 November at the Council home followed by the selling after Mass on Saturday and Sunday 14 & 15 No-vember. On 18 November we will have an open meeting. This will be our Memorial Mass to remember all those that have passed. We will start the evening at 7PM with the Rosary followed by Mass. Light refresh-ments will be served after Mass. Thanksgiving is 26 November. I highlight that because that next day Friday 27 November begins our Christmas tree sales. PGK Gagnon is our chairman. Trees will be sold over the weekends and week nights until 13 December or sooner if we sellout. Lots of Brother knights are needed to help sell the trees so please sign up when contacted. Also on November 7 at the Harvest Bazaar and on November 20 & 29 and again on December 5 & 6 we have KCIC card sales following mass. Again we need Brother Knights to help sell cards. Dan Lupinetti is chairing this event so please sign up with him if you can help. Looking ahead, the Adult Christmas Party (aka Teddy Bears) is on 12 December so save the date.

On October 24th we celebrated our volunteers with a joy-filled large crowd of holy family ministers. We honored Brother Knight Bernie and Terry Bresnihan as volunteers of the year. Among their many responsibilities Bernie serves as chair of Holy Family Finance Council, while Terri coordi-nates our sacristy. In recognizing the generous commitment of our many volunteers , especially the Bresnihans, to the mission of Holy Family, we are all called to spend our time and talent to pro-mote the work of our parish. As parents to a diocesan priest, Fr Ed Bresnihan, they also help to foster vocations.

Nov 1 is designated as Vocations Sunday. We welcome a diocesan Seminarian to share a testimony at the masses. An opportunity is offered to our members who need more assistance with their immigration status at St Paul's Methodist Church on Sat NOV 7. See the bulletin for details. as the scripture says; "Would that all the people of God were prophets!!" Yours in Christ, Fr. Gerry

CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE

As you know, Father Edward L. Richardson SMA Assembly #3174 of the Fourth Degree is partici-pating in the Overseas Coupon Program. We periodically send coupons to Wiesbaden Army Base in Wiesbaden, Germany, for use at Post and Base Exchanges and Commissaries.

What you need to do is simple: Bring MANUFACTURER'S coupons (both food and non-food) to your regular council meetings. The 4th De-gree will collect, tabulate and send them off. It won't cost you a cent. The folks on the base tell me that in the food category, they can really use coupons for baby food. In the non-food, category, coupons for pet food and supplies would be greatly appreciated. Several guidelines: • Manufacturer's coupons only. No restaurants, grocery stores, etc • Please pay attention to expiration dates. Coupons used on the base are good for six (6) months after the

expiration date. • It would be very helpful if you could separate the coupons into “food” and 'non-food” categories. If you eat

or drink it for a meal or snack it's food. Vitamins, medical products, etc., are non-food. • We have a box marked “Military Coupons” just outside the clubroom door, so if you can't make it to meet-

ings, you can still contribute by dropping them in the box when you're at the Council Home. Over the past year, we sent more than $30,000 in coupons to help our folks in uniform. Please contin-ue to help with this good work.

Please go on the Council Website and verify or update your email address. If you have any questions, email me at [email protected] . I sent an email to all members on the Supreme List in September to verify all addresses. Any member with an email address listed in the roster maintained at Supreme should have received a message. If you do not receive, please email me as soon as possible to update this information. Valid email addresses are essential to good communication. All members will receive their dues notice via email NLT December 1 for the 2016 calendar year. PGK Bob Weiss, Financial Secretary

Walter Dick

Our Knight of the Month for October is Brother Wal-ter Dick. Walter is an Honorary Life Member of John Paul 1 Council. Over the years there is proba-bly nothing that Walter has not done. This is lauda-tory in itself but this is not about that. This is about what Walter continues to do for the Council today. On most Monday nights since way before I joined the Council, Walter can be found at the VFW selling pull tabs at the weekly John Paul 1 Bingo Event. Bingo is one of our most important activities. It pays the bills for the Council Home we all enjoy and pro-vides the funds needed to carry out our generous Charitable Program. Walter is a Bingo Legend and probably knows most of the players by their first name. But it’s not just Bingo. It’s the Dale City Pa-rade, Holy Family Festival set-up and take down, selling Christmas trees, preparing subs for our Sub Sale activity and much, much more. Fraternity is one of our principles. Walter is all about Fraternity. He and Barbara, a long-time member of the KC La-dies, are fixtures at the summer cookouts and on Fridays at the Council Home. Walter loves mixing it up with all his Brother Knights – even those that do not root for the Yankees.

For all of the above and much more, Walter is our

Knight of the Month. Thanks Walt for all you do.

Page 7

Our Family for the Month of November is Lupinetti family. Dan & Jennifer are regulars at council events from summer cookouts to the Holy Family Festival beer booth. Dan gets involved with council events by first being an inside guard this year and volunteered to coordinate the councils participation for running the beer & wine booth at the Holy Family Festival. He again stepped up and is coordinating this years Keep Christ in Christmas card sales in the coming weeks. Dan & Jennifer also have 2 children Emily, who is 4 and attends Holy Family pre-school and Danielle, 11 months who as Dan puts it is “learning life”. So you can see why Dan, Jennifer and the girls have been chosen as the Family of the Month.

Since its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care policy holders in the United States, there’s an added bonus.

It’s called “Provider Pathway,” a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discount-ed rates. The network includes discounts on products, such as hearing aids, diabetic supplies, personal emergency response systems, and durable medical equipment, as well as skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and adult day care. Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of Columbus long-term care insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing requirements.

If you haven’t yet spoken with me about long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do so. There are a few decisions to make in choosing a “plan” — a comprehensive plan that covers care whether you’re at home or in a facility, or one that covers facility only; daily benefit amounts and benefit durations (how much and how

long it will last); and the length of the elimination period (waiting period) before benefits kick-in.

Brothers, I just want to reminisce about the great experience which we have lived recently, during Pope Fran-cis’s visit to the United Steals, his days in Washington DC., New York City and Philadelphia. If we have to take only one thing away with us from the experience of his visit, that would be his example and exemplifica-tion for all, of the virtues of humility and service. His personal choices during the trip, reflect every step of the way, what this papacy is about, living by exam-ple to the best of his ability given the statue of his office, the mentioned Christian virtues. Let’s all honor his visit by trying to mirror our lives after the living model which Pope Francis has left us with.
