KNAPP NOW A PRIMARY STROKE CENTER ADVANCES IN IMAGING

DID YOU KNOW THAT KNAPP...

The Joint Camp at Knapp is dedicated to the comprehensive care of hip replacement and knee replacement patients. The Joint Camp is not your typical hospital experience! It is a wellness program designed to relieve pain, increase mobility, and quickly return patients to their daily activities. The program combines extensive education for the patient and their family and group-focused therapy.

A key piece in the recovery process is the post-operative pain relief system. Through a small catheter, the system delivers anesthetic directly to the surgical site to provide ongoing pain

Knapp Medical Center now offers a Joint Camp Program that focuses on education, encouragement, and teamwork to optimize the patient’s experience before, during, and after joint replacement surgery.

relief for about two days after the surgery.

The pain relief system allows patients to be on fewer pain medications, which can reduce the potential side effects of dizziness, nausea, and constipation from this type of medication. The self-contained medication system is worn by the patient which increases a patient’s mobility and leads to a better rehabilitation.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Knapp Medical Center is now a certified Primary Stroke Center, a national designation granted to hospitals demonstrating consistent, excellent and advanced care of stroke victims.

Stroke is an Emergency, Act FASTWhen dealing with stroke, acting FAST is key to treatment and recovery. Stroke is a rapid loss of brain function caused by a reduction in blood flow to the brain, often caused by either blocked blood vessels leading to the brain or a ruptured blood vessel within the brain itself. Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States, according to the American Stroke Association. Dr. Dionisio B. Calvo III, Knapp Medical Center Chief of Staff and Stroke Program Medical

Director, explains the signs and symptoms of stroke and why time is brain.

FACE – “We’re looking for crookedness or what we call asymmetry, where one side of the face looks different than the other side. For example, droopy eyelids, a sagging mouth, or dripping saliva,” Dr. Calvo said.

ARM – “While A is for arm, it also includes the legs. If your leg doesn’t seem to work or there is numbness or tingling, that counts, ” Dr. Calvo said. “Things we are looking for include numbness, awkwardness, or lack of strength or movement in the extremities. For example, when eating, you can’t put the spoon in your mouth or the spoon just drops. If you’re walking, you may be leaning or limping to one side because one leg does not have enough power to support you standing.”

SPEECH – “Symptoms regarding speech include garbled speech, or you cannot say what you want, or maybe you cannot even talk. Those are the major things we look for,” Dr. Calvo said.

TIME– “T, of course, is for time. This is perhaps the most important. Call 911 immediately, because paramedics will be able to get you to the hospital faster than your private transportation. Trust the paramedics to make the decision if you need to be seen by a physician right away,” Dr. Calvo said. “Remember, time is brain. It is better for you to make the mistake of going to the emergency room and finding out that you did not have a stroke than to wait a long time and lose that window of opportunity. That window is so small when it comes to the brain. Every minute that you don’t get treatment, you lose nearly 2 million neurons in your brain. For more information on stroke visit www.knappmed.org.
