HPE Department OverviewThe Health and Physical Education Curriculum at Centenary SHS is designed to educate students on the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. It aims to provide students with knowledge and experiences that they can then use throughout their life, in order to be healthy and active.

In HPE, students will still study a range of sports where they will be encouraged to participate, work together, communicate and cooperate as they learn the skills, strategies and tactics of different sports. These experiences will encourage students to continue to participate in physical activities throughout their lives, as they recognise the many benefits of being physically active.

Students will also learn about the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, through participation in a number of theory lessons. These theory lessons will cover health issues that relate to personal and social health. As they progress through the course, students will also learn about Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics and Sports Medicine.

The Junior HPE course will adequately prepare students to specialise in Physical Education, Health Education, Physical Recreation or Certificate IV in Fitness once they reach senior school.

HPE Department OverviewBy studying Health and Physical Education, students will gain learning experiences that will provide them with knowledge of a range of sports and physical activities as well as an understanding and appreciation of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Students will develop a strong appreciation of teamwork, cooperation, commitment and dedication.

Students have access to first class facilities for the HPE program at school. The massive Sport and Recreation centre houses two full size basketball courts, 8 badminton courts, 4 volleyball courts, 2 netball courts as well as a first class gymnasium. In addition to this students use our outdoor tennis courts for a variety of sports and our oval which includes an eight lane running track, long jump pit, outdoor gymnasium and cricket nets.

The HPE staff are a committed and dedicated group of educators with vast amounts of experience in many different sports. Many of the staff have particular expertise in certain sports and have played sport to a high level themselves. The staff are passionate about providing opportunities for students to engage in PE and Sport and provide numerous opportunities for the students to apply the skills they learn in PE in a range of sporting competitions. Whilst winning is not our sole focus, the encouragement of a team philosophy where we all contribute to the school goals has led to many successes on the sports field, which in turn adds to our sense of belonging to our school.

Junior HPE ProgramThe Junior HPE program at Centenary SHS focuses on participation, enjoyment, skill development and the importance of an active lifestyle. Students learn the skills of a range of sports and are encouraged to participate and enjoy being involved. In the Junior HPE program students will play sports that include Basketball, Netball, Soccer, AFL, Athletics, Cross Country, Cricket, Softball, Orienteering, Volleyball, Touch, Badminton, Tennis, Strength and conditioning, Futsal and Team Handball. The skills learned in these sports can then be taken to the school sporting teams and used in competition for those students looking for that extra opportunity to represent the school in sport.

Students also learn about healthy nutrition practices, the changes that occur to their bodies as they grow, body image, relationships, drugs, alcohol and smoking. They investigate the good and not so good things related to each of these with the purpose being to understand the need for healthy lifestyle choices.

The Junior HPE program is built upon students gaining knowledge and skills that they can use throughout their life, as well as adequately preparing them for other PE subjects that they may choose to study in Senior School.

Senior PE program The Senior PE program at Centenary gives students the opportunity to specialise in those areas that are of interest to them.

Students who love playing sport at a high level and wish to learn strategies, tactics and additional skills of a range of sports can choose to study Physical Education. This high level subject gives students the chance to really engage in a sport and become proficient at it.

Those students who wish to remain active and contribute to their healthy lifestyle through recreational activities can study the subject of Recreation. In this subject students get the opportunity to experience a range of recreational activities with the aim of being able to expose students to opportunities that they may enjoy and then choose to stay involved in during their adult life.

Those students who have an interest in Health issues can choose to study Health Education where they learn about issues that impact on the health of our society in general and specific populations within our society. They investigate the underlying issues within the society and then propose solutions to address these problems.

Those students who are interested in gaining a qualification that will be recognised nationwide will have the opportunity to gain a fitness qualification to become a personal trainer by completing a Certificate 4 in Fitness. They can then leave school with a qualification that enables them to be employed as a fitness trainer and they can start earning money immediately.

The Senior PE program offers a range of pathways for all students interested in being healthy and active. The skills that they learn in junior school provide students with a sound base upon which they can then build on in our senior program.

Centenary Sports programOur PE programs complement our school sporting program. Skills that they learn in the PE program are then utilised in school sporting teams. The Centenary Crocodiles sporting teams compete in a range of competitions primarily within our West Brisbane District. We compete in District Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals as well as a range of sporting days where the Crocodiles participate in many different sports.

In recent years we have obtained success in Cross Country and Athletics, culminating in becoming the Champion Athletics School in 2015 and 2016. This has given us a great platform to launch into our 2017 sporting program where we aim to become the West Brisbane District Champion School.

Developing Lifestyles HabitsThe primary goal of the HPE and Sport program at Centenary SHS is to provide students with opportunities and experiences that will encourage them to develop an active and healthy lifestyle. Being active and healthy as you go through your life has many physical, social and emotional benefits. We aim for students to gain experiences so that they can have these benefits in their adult life.

Any student can participate in HPE and Sport at Centenary SHS – it is not about being elite or only catering for the best athletes – it is about giving every student knowledge and the opportunity to be involved in physical activity. Hopefully they can find something that they like and enjoy and will then remain active and healthy throughout their life.
