Introduction

Cengage Learning’s General Ledger (CLGL) is an interactive, online version of the Klooster and Allen Automated Accounting software previously available in Cengage Learning’s college‐level accounting textbooks. Preparing General Ledger Assignments

Audience

This document provides an overview of creating Cengage Learning General Ledger (CLGL) assignments, creating courses, previewing assignments as a student, and the available features in your Gradebook. This document assumes that you have already registered for course content with Cengage Learning.

For in‐depth instructions for setting assignment options and managing assignment content, you can refer to the Textual Help in CengageNOWv2. You can also go to the Cengage Learning support site at http://support.cengage.com/magellanweb/TechSupport/Login.aspx, where you can log in and select the appropriate product to view FAQS, download complete user guides, and access other support materials.

When to Assign General Ledger Problems

Most Cengage Learning accounting problems are designed to either teach specific concepts, or to introduce and test on journal entries. Standard journal entry problem types are graded closely for format, accounts, and amounts — so these problems tend to emulate manual journals. CLGL problems, on the other hand, emulate a commercial accounting system, complete with many standard commercial short‐cuts for journal entries and report formatting.

Standard accounting problems grade journal entries in a very structured manner, with some limited student flexibility for “smart entry” of account names in some problems. CLGL grades the student for achieving the correct end result, rather than grading individual journal entries. As in commercial accounting systems, the journal entries are entered in different orders and the student is graded only on whether the end balances are correct.

CLGL also emulates commercial accounting systems by automating some accounting functions, such as statement generation and closing entries. So, CLGL problems are recommended when you want to give students the flavor of inputting journal entries and generating statements within a real‐world work setting. If, on the other hand, you want to teach closing entries or the manual creation of reports, you should assign the standard problem types instead.

Creating a CengageNOWv2 Course

Note: Course creation and student self‐enrollment procedures are not required if you are accessing CNOWv2 through an integrated Learning Management System such as Blackboard or Desire to Learn.

When you enter CengageNOWv2 from the Cengage Learning Instructor Resource Center (https://login.cengage.com/cb/), your Home page loads.

You can enable self‐enrollment by providing your students with the Student Registration Information PDF generated within CengageNOWv2. This PDF includes a Course Key URL that directs students to a CengageBrain registration page specific to your course.

Step Action

1 Cross into CengageNOWv2 after logging in to your Cengage Learning Instructor Resource Center (https://login.cengage.com/cb/). If this is a new account, your first step is to create a course.

2 Click the Courses link in the heading to open the Courses page.

From this page you can select to Build a Course Manually, Copy an Existing Course, or Import a Course via a File. The instructions for building a course manually are given in this example.

7 Fill out the remaining information for your course, such as Course Name, Course Number, and Dates. When available, you can select whether to include a Syllabus, require a Student ID, or to permit students to send you an email during an assignment take. (CLGL assignments are unable to supply a screen capture as part of the message.)

8 Click Create Course when you are done and the Course Created page opens.

If you wish to allow self‐enrollment, you can opt to send the Student Registration Information document to your students from this page (in the image above, the links are circled in red under Course Key).

Note: Clicking Create a Section under Reuse This Course allows you to create multiple sections of the same course. This supplies you with a separate Gradebook for each section.

2 Click the Create Assignment button to open the Create an Assignment page where you can choose your assignment type. Clicking Cancel allows you to exit without making any changes.

11 (Optional) Edit the available assignment options on the right to best suit the your needs. You can choose to change the number of takes, the availability of feedback, grading preferences, restrictions to taking an assignment, etc. You can even create reusable “option sets” that you can later apply to other assignments.

Note: CLGL assignments cannot be printed and student responses are always forwarded on subsequent takes, regardless of assignment option settings.

12 (Optional) Enter a new point value in the text box adjacent an item name. To see item content, mouse over the item row and click the Preview button that appears.

When available, the Avg Time appearing with each item can supply global information on the average time required to complete that activity.

13 (Optional) Reorganize your assignment by creating grouped pools of questions and dragging pools and/or items in the item list.

14 Click Publish at the top of the page when you are done to save your assignment and open the Assignment Created page (or you can click Cancel to exit without saving).

At this point, your assignment is complete and assigned to the current course. However, you still have the ability to make modifications by using the Edit Assignment link on the Assignment Created page or the Edit link on the Assignments page to modify assignment details and options.

Understanding the CLGL Student Experience

You don’t need to leave your instructor account to see the student experience in your course. CengageNOWv2 provides options allowing you to take assignments as a student.

Note: For detailed instructions on the General Ledger, you can click the Help specific to the problem or refer to the General Ledger Overview for Students, which is available on the Cengage Learning support site.

Taking a General Ledger Assignment as a Student

Step Action

1 Go to the Assignments page and click an assignment name to open the Assignment Summary page.

Note: In systems that provide it, it possible access a student view of your entire course by clicking the As Student link in the Global Actions Menu (person icon).

2 Click the Preview as Student link to open the Assignment Ready page.

3 Click the Start Assignment Now button to open the assignment take.

4 Click Yes in the Additional Information pane to see printable instructions specific to the problem you have open. You can now work in a student view.

Using the CengageNOWv2 Gradebook

CengageNOWv2 automatically grades everything it can grade electronically, marks items that must be manually graded, and calculates a student’s final grade or “grade to date.” For those Learning Management Systems that integrate with CNOWv2, the scores are synchronized between the two gradebooks.
