Cambridge English CELTA Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

The CELTA is an introductory course for candidates who have little or no previous English language teaching experience; or for candidates with some experience but little previous training. During the course, candidates develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. The course is designed around a preparation, teaching and feedback cycle, and includes daily* teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers in the classroom and completion of a range of practically focused written assignments. There are also daily* input sessions dealing with current methodology and language analysis and their application in the classroom. *See part-time timetable below.

Note: the CELTA course is highly intensive. Candidates are strongly encouraged not to have any outside work or study commitments during the course.

develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English

develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom

The CELTA certificate is awarded to candidates who have completed the course successfully, including the teaching practice and written work. There are no examinations at the end of the course. The grades Pass A, Pass B and Pass are awarded as a result of continuous assessment by our tutors. Trainees are always kept informed of their progress during the course. Candidates are strongly recommended to read the CELTA syllabus and assessment criteria, available on the Cambridge English website. Download the CELTA syllabus

Course tutors:

We have a dedicated in-house team of full-time teacher trainers who, in addition to being approved by Cambridge English, are highly qualified in the field of EFL and have many years of teaching and training experience within the International House World Organisation. An external assessor from Cambridge English also inspects each course in order to ensure the exacting standards required by the University are being met.

Entry requirements:

Age

It is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over.

Language proficiency

Applicants must have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels. This

would ideally be at Cambridge CPE (Proficiency) level. We do appreciate that many non-native applicants do possess a very high level of English. However,

this does not guarantee that they will able to handle the rigours and stress of the CELTA course. The course requires the ability to produce accurate spoken and written English to an extremely high level and to be able to read and assimilate written material in a demanding and dynamic academic environment.

Non-native speakers who do not possess a recent (within the last 2 years) international certificate (IELTS, CAE, CPE) that verifies their level of spoken and written English will need to complete a level test at our institute prior to the interview (one hour approximately).

Application criteria

Applicants must have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to successfully complete both the written assignments and the assessed teaching practice.

Accommodation:

There is a wealth of accommodation available in Buenos Aires and we can provide prospective candidates with detailed information about various options, including bed & breakfast/hostels; home stays; shared apartments; and flats, many of which have been recommended to us by previous candidates. We will happily forward full information once your application has been received and can arrange home stay accommodation upon request, subject/according to availability.

Because of the intensive nature of the course, we recommend that candidates find accommodation as close to

the institute as possible.

If you wish to look for accommodation further away then you should ensure that it has good transport links. In

addition, a quiet place to study and work in the evenings and weekends is essential, and internet connection is

invaluable.
