Permanent commitment to education in glass technology Efficient and reliable industrial production strongly relies on the experience and skills of the employees within a given company. In that respect, knowledge transfer and education in glass technology are vital for the sustainability of the global glass industry. Such points constitute one of the pillars of CelSian Glass & Solar, a company demonstrating commitment and dedication to the glass industry for more than 25 years. This in-depth course covers most aspects of glass and glass production: Starting from raw materials to the formed product, with emphasis on glass melting technology, furnace, refractories, emissions, recycling, defects and the relationships between glass structure and properties. It is intended for experienced engineers in the glass industry to receive a more detailed understanding of glass production, newcomers to the glass producing industry and related suppliers and young glass technologists and scientists. The typical format of the course is a five day intensive session but it can easily be adapted to fit specific requirements. Each attendee receives a two volume (800 pages) glass course handbook in the English language, the PDF of slides used as support material, as well as access to an introductory e-learning course. The e-learning course was developed recently and comprises 11 short videos to provide attendees with an interactive preparation to the training. CelSian’s activities in knowledge transfer and education are diverse and encompass glass technology training courses, the organisation of seminars (via the GlassTrend consortium), active participation in conferences and the promotion of glass technology and science to a broader, non-specialist audience. UK-BASED COURSE 2016To celebrate the Society of Glass Technology’s centenary, the five day CelSian - NCNG International Glass Technology Course will be organised in Sheffield from 29 February to 4 March 2016. This event will take place at the SGT and British Glass building in Chapeltown, near Sheffield.

CelSian is teaming up with Neil Simpson to bring this course to the UK for the first time. Together with the in-depth knowledge provided, the comprehensive glass technology handbooks and access to CelSian’s introductory e-learning course, attendees will benefit from two evening social events, organised to broaden their network and promote exchange. A tour to the DSF refractory plant in Newhaven, Derbyshire will be organised to complement the course.

CelSian’s-NCNG Glass Technology courses are offered during ‘International Glass Technology Course’ sessions, or as region-dedicated (see details of a forthcoming UK-based course elsewhere in this article) and company-dedicated training, for which CelSian’s teachers travel to a site chosen by the company to train their employees. New modules or dedicated courses on selected topics can also be developed on request.

In addition to the detailed in-depth knowledge gathered in glass technology, participants also have the opportunity to strengthen their network, thanks to the interactive format of the classes and to social events organised on two evenings during the week. Visits to industrial sites are also arranged, to combine

the theoretical knowledge with actual experience. Ever-increasing interest from the industry means that five day ‘International Glass Technology Course’ sessions are now organised at least twice every year: In June, hosted at Libbey’s showroom in Toledo, Ohio, USA (next session - 20-24 June 2016) and in September in Eindhoven (at CelSian’s premises).

A UK-based course will be organised for the first time in Sheffield this year. Finally, as a tradition dating back more than 20 years, the course is delivered each year to employees of the Dutch glass industry (in Dutch). The Dutch course is given at two levels; engineer and skilled operator level and technician level.

GLASSTREND CONSORTIUMCelSian also facilitates the GlassTrend consortium (Glass Technology REsearch and New Developments, started in 2000), an international open platform for pre-competitive, cost sharing research work. GlassTrend has 45 member companies at present, including most of the world’s leading glass producers, equipment or raw materials suppliers and research institutes. The Board of Directors consists of people from the industry and from CelSian. The present knowledge

and technologies available within the glass industry are combined with disciplines and technologies from different industrial domains in order to generate innovative solutions or valuable new knowledge. Many development projects are running on such topics as energy reduction, the latest measurement technologies, emissions, refractory corrosion and advanced process control.

As one of the benefits of their membership, GlassTrend companies receive a discount for the CelSian-NCNG Glass Technology Courses. They can also contribute and benefit from the recently created GlassTrend-University programme, which was discussed in the September/October 2015 issue of Glass Worldwide, preferred journal of GlassTrend (see interview with GlassTrend Chairman, Anne-Jans Faber elsewhere in this issue).

In addition to the projects, several activities are scheduled to efficiently promote knowledge sharing, usually including two seminars or workshops on selected issues every year, as well as study tours. The two seminars organised in 2015, last April in Bilbao, Spain (hosted by Vidrala) and in October in Eindhoven (hosted by CelSian), were both attended by about 70 participants, representing in total more than 50 companies from over 15 countries. Alongside the knowledge provided by the state-of-the-art contributions presented by speakers, these events bring together representatives of the different key sectors of the glass industry, representing tremendous opportunities for all participants to broaden their network and generate new ideas and projects.

OTHER ACTIVITIESCelSian’s commitment to education does not only include training courses for employees of the glass industry and promotion of knowledge transfer via the organisation of seminars. The company organises customer-dedicated workshops as well, short in-house training courses and

consultancy visits on targeted topics. The popularisation of glass science and technology to a broader, non-specialist audience and reaching out to future graduates, thus to the potential future talents of the glass industry, are also part of CelSian’s endeavours.

Active participation in the ICG technical committee TC23 (Education) is a logical step in that direction. Other examples include lectures at museums, such as M Hubert’s keynote lecture during the exhibition ‘Glass – Engine of progress’ at Het Nieuwe Instituut (museum of architecture, design and e-culture in Rotterdam), or teaching a series of online lectures in the framework of the IMI-NFG

course on ‘Glass Processing’, for which more than 200 students from all over the world participated.

These activities are fully integrated within CelSian’s strategy and effort to support the glass industry worldwide. Within a broad portfolio of services and technological solutions dedicated to glass melting optimisation and innovation, education is an important key in the support provided to work together with customers towards sustainable industrial glass production.
