The City of Okeechobee Centennial Com-mittee began their meeting on Monday, Aug. 25, with reports from committee members. Sharie Turgeon, the media liaison, discussed the recent WOKC interview which the fi -nal Call to Artists was made for the Centen-nial logo. Submissions were to be in the City Clerk’s offi ce by end of day on Aug. 19 to pre-pare for the upcoming meeting. Ms. Turgeon also had notifi ed the committee of another scheduled interview with WOKC to announce that a logo had been approved and would be announced at an unveiling at the “Kick Off Dinner” for our Centennial year in Janu-ary 2015. The committee agreed to keep the logo design under wraps to offi cially present the logo in a grand way at that fi rst event. The committee has also discussed that a number of media are eager to work with the Centen-nial Committee and the City to help celebrate its birthday.

School liaison Jeanne Enfi nger continues to work with Superintendent Ken Kenworthy and others to secure venues for upcoming events. Committee members that are ap-pointed to coordinate the events will be asked to follow up with these venues.

Historic time line liaison Magi Cable has

been pouring through countless records to ensure that our history is not only recognized but celebrated as accurately as possible. The committee members that are appointed to certain events will be able to use the time line to research events and activities that may be included in the celebrations.

In planning for the events that will take place this next year the committee appointed members to oversee particular events. If you are interested in helping plan and facilitate one of these exciting events please stop by one of the meetings and let us know where you would like to help.

The meeting ended with an air of excite-ment as the logo submissions were viewed and voted on. The fi nal logo design is still under discussion but a fi rst draft and an art-ist were chosen to represent our fair city and it’s centennial. The artist will be given sugges-tions by the committee and then asked to sub-mit a completed logo. The fi nal submissions totalled 29 entries received by local artists and high school students.

The committee would like to give a big shout out to Mr. Pung’s Graphic Design class for their submissions and meeting the de-mands of a tight deadline as the deadline for the submissions were the following day.

Fundraising ideas continue to be gathered by the committee.

The Centennial Committee would again like to welcome the public to the commit-tee meetings which are currently being held at City Hall in the City Council chambers the second and fourth Monday of each month. These dates may change with the holidays approaching, so be sure to check the City of Okeechobee website for changes.

A local man reportedly told an Okeecho-bee County Sheriff ’s Offi ce (OCSO) deputy he is missing some prescription pain killers and cash since two women visited his home.

OCSO Deputy Sergeant Paul Ferrell indicat-ed in his report the victim noticed is missing seven fentanyl patches and $500 in cash. The

victim apparently told Sgt. Ferrell he fi rst no-ticed the cash and patches missing after two women were in his U.S. 441 S.E. home.

New Horizons of the Treasure Coast Inc. (NHTC) will hold its fourth annual Race for Recovery at the Mets Stadium in Port St. Lu-cie on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 a.m.

October is Mental Health Awareness Month. In 1990, the U.S. Congress estab-lished October as Mental Illness Awareness Month in recognition of NAMI’s efforts to

raise mental illness and substance abuse awareness. Since then, mental health advo-cates across the country have joined with others in their communities to sponsor ac-tivities, large or small, for public education about mental illness and substance abuse.

New Horizons asks that the community come out and celebrate recovery! Help us end the stigma of brain diseases that keep people from getting help! Support our cli-

ents, families and friends. Help raise funds for the only critical care clinic for children on the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee. Mon-ies raised will also assist NHTC to continue caring for and providing services to adults with mental health and substance abuse challenges. New Horizons provides services at little or no cost to those struggling with alcoholism, drug addiction, anxiety, depres-sion, bi-polar, schizophrenia as well as any and all mental health concerns. We provide a variety of evidence-based recovery pro-grams administered by professional medical and therapeutic staff.

Run, walk or just come out and enjoy the morning for fellowship and fun. Race for Recovery registration is available online at www.active.com or call 772-672-8333. Cost to run or walk is $30 per person in advance or $35 the day of the race. Email [email protected] with questions.

A private, non-profi t organization estab-lished in 1958, New Horizons of the Trea-sure Coast and Okeechobee’s mission is to

provide accessible, recovery-oriented be-havioral health care services to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in our community.

FCHC donates school suppliesThe incentive program at the Dr. Fred Brown Children’s Health Center ben-efi ted local school children. As the new year kicks off, students fi nd them-selves returning to school ready to learn but often lacking the necessary supplies to complete their daily lessons. The Florida Community Health Center (FCHC) generously came to the rescue by donating hundreds of dol-lars worth of much needed supplies for school children. Tom Jones, center manager, shared that employees at the Dr. Fred Brown Children’s Health Center paid $2 to wear casual clothing on Fridays.“Our employees voted to donate to the schools so that every child has the necessary supplies to do well in school.”Okeechobee County Schools thanks FCHC for thinking of the children of its community.

Drainage• How about really even taking some el-

evations to prove water does not run uphill. I hope the new commissioner will realize the simple issues are the important ones. Like drainage, less government building, addi-tion of employees and expansion of depart-ments, more private development and new enterprises. We shall see, and many shall watch. One more election will determine our new commissioner, so what is their plat-form?

• You think the county will actually con-sider elevation when working on the ditches? Dare to dream! The drainage system should be priority for the county, but considering what a mess it is, I wouldn’t expect it to be fi xed anytime soon. If you are planning to buy property, or build anything, check out the land during the wet season.

What now?• Now that the county and the sheriff

have come to a budget compromise, I won-der what they will have to talk about at the county commission meetings. Could they possibly get back to fi guring out how to re-open the Okee-Tantie Campground? Maybe work on a plan to improve local infrastruc-ture? How about giving business a boost by putting a moratorium on impact fees until the economy improves? Now that the hot topic of the sheriff ’s budget is settled — at least for this year — I hope the public does not lose interest in the county meetings.

• It amazes me that this property is al-lowed to sit “fallow.” The lady and I use our R/V regularly in the state. In the fall and win-ter, it’s almost impossible to fi nd a space at the last minute. Both John Prince and South Bay are heavily used by our northern neigh-bors, here to escape the ravages of winter. Torrey Island is also replete with the émigr-ers. It would seem that the county is missing out on a great income.

Budget• $14.3 million for the year — that is

more than $1 million a month for law en-forcement, court security and the jail. That is a lot of money for a small, rural county to come up with. We managed to fi nd the funds for this year, but what happens next year and the year after that?

Cell phones• When are people going to learn that

cell phones and driving do not mix? Talking on the phone while driving is distracted driv-ing, especially if you have to use one hand to hold the phone. Texting while driving is suicide. You need to watch the road, not a phone screen. People got along just fi ne in the days before cell phones. That message can wait until you pull off the roadway.

Smart meter?• Sparks have been seen coming from a

meter on a home. Due to inadequate train-ing, some meters are not installed properly. What safety precautions are taken while in-stalling Smart Meters adjacent to gas lines? Is it possible that fi re could start from an arc from a meter located above a gas meter? Could fi re be started by an arc from a Smart Meters. Smart Meters have not been proved safe and not harmful through the testing that there are no health impacts and there is no harm.

Automated cashiers• “Welcome to McDonald’s. My name is

HAL 9000. May I take your order?” Designed to boost effi ciency and make ordering more convenient for customers, a new computer system will also open up a gold mine of data. McDonald’s could potentially track every Big Mac, McNugget, and large shake you order. The touch screens will only accept debit or credit cards, adding to the slow death knell of cash and coins. And cashiers.

• A rise in the minimum wage to $15 na-tionally spells disaster for all the small busi-ness owners in depressed areas. This is truly a “States Rights” issue. Let the State set what they feel is right, then the rest can watch the results and adjust accordingly.

• It’s the future regardless of who pushes what. Even if people worked for free and only required the mountain of paperwork, insur-ance, training, turnover, liability, babysitting, etc. they will still be replaced by kiosks/ro-bots/machines.

Vote ‘yes’ for CSCI’m writing you in support of the Chil-

dren’s Services Council of Okeechobee, which provides grants to programs that as-sist the youth and children in our county.

In 1992, I started a Martial Arts Youth Program in Okeechobee. In 1994, I applied for a grant to the council for the fi rst time. Since then, the program has received a grant every year to the present. We have registered over 2,000 participants through the years. Many children have participated over fi ve years. And some children even 10 years.

The program provides a FREE positive alternative activity to children during after-school hours. This is a structured activity that is enjoyable. It also promotes physi-cal fi tness and character development. The classes occur four days per week—Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursdays, and Fridays—from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—teaching Tae-Kwon-Do and Arnis (Philip-pine Martial Arts) at the Pavilion of Sacred Heart Church, 901 S.W. Sixth St. The class sizes range between 5-25 students, and the classes are taught by four instructors.

The program assists in the reduction of children being drawn to negative activities such as substance abuse and delinquency. The program collaborates with parents in encouraging children to improve school performance. The goal of the program is to empower children through charac-ter development, and ultimately, to help them achieve their full potential in life. Stu-dents are taught the signifi cance of every aspect of their training in martial arts; for example, developing martial art skills intro-duces students to concepts such as focus and concentration, physical fi tness, persis-tence, and patience. To be more specifi c, for example: sparring. Sparring develops a student’s attitude towards dealing with ad-versity and goals in life. Martial arts training build self-confi dence, discipline, and lead-ership skills. Students are often amazed at what they can accomplish after only a few months of training. Each level of training, from white-belt through black-belt, pres-ents increasing challenge for each student. In addition to demonstrating a student’s skills for his/her rank, he/she is also re-quired to understand important concepts. For example, before a new student is pro-moted to the fi rst rank of yellow-belt (after three months) the student must understand the “Tae Kwon Do Code,” which teaches a

student to be honest, helpful, respectful, and “to stand by the weak.” Students areasked what the code means and how it ap-plies in their daily lives. A young student, for example, could explain, “helping eachother” as helping his or her parents andbrothers and sisters at home, or for teenag-ers, he or she could explain the importanceof social responsibility and communityservice. These concepts are introduced tothe students in class and during testing asexplained by the instructors. Once a stu-dent is promoted to a higher rank, he orshe is expected to serve as an example andas a role model to lower ranking, youngerstudents, and particularly, his/her youngerbrothers and sisters. Among many thingsthe children learn, they are encouraged,(1) to obey their parents at all times, (2)not to fi ght with brothers and sisters, (3) toalways be honest, (4) to keep his/her roomclean, (5) to help with household chores,(6) to listen to school teachers, (7) to dohis/her homework and improve his/hergrades, (8) to spend extra time studying af-ter homework, (9) to be helpful to others, and (10) to continue martial arts traininguntil he/she reaches black-belt.

Since the program’s initial funding withthe Children’s Services Council many chil-dren have benefi ted from these classes. Ev-ery year, the program has performed mar-tial arts demonstrations at special eventsincluding the Speckled Perch Festival andother similar occasions.

This November is a critical time to“revote” the Okeechobee Children’s Servic-es Council. Many children in Okeechobeehave benefi ted from programs funded bythe council. The Martial Arts Youth Programhas only been made available to the youthand children of Okeechobee through thefunding of the council in the last 20 years. Ifthe council was not continued under Refer-endum #1, it would mean a great loss notonly for those youth and children who arecurrently participating, but to many in thenear future in our county.

To vote “Yes” for Referendum #1means to keep much needed services andprograms for our youth and children in thecounty.

Sincerely,Roger Azcona

4. The Planning and Development De-partment shall schedule a de-briefi ng after each event and shall solicit input from the property owners, Fire Rescue Department, Sheriff ’s Offi ce and the Florida Department of Transportation to assess the impacts of the event and determine whether adjust-ments to the approved procedures are war-ranted; and,

5. Additional Okeechobee Music and Funfest events will require a new application subject to applicable regulations in effect at the time of the application.

According to the county staff report, the Sundance Trails property was subdivided several years ago but most lots are owned by the original developer or the develop-ment company.

A lodge, originally built as a large resi-dence, and a few outbuildings are the only structures on the property. No houses have been built since the property was subdi-vided. The total area of the subdivision and an adjoining parcel also owned by the ap-plicant is 848 acres.

The applicant is seeking authorization to stage several outdoor music festivals on the property. He has assembled a team with ex-pertise in all facets of staging large outdoor festivals. Each festival would run from Friday through Sunday, with people beginning to arrive on Thursday and the last people leav-ing on Monday. There are plans for a rec-reational vehicle camping section, several sections where people would camp next to their car, and sections for those that attend just during the day and would not be camp-ing overnight.

The anticipated attendance is 10,000 to

20,000 people. The festivals would have the usual amenities and activities, with mul-tiple stages, vendors selling food and drinks including beer and wine, vendors selling souvenirs and maybe a few staples, shower areas, and an emergency services station for law enforcement and emergency medical treatment.

The applicant is requesting authorization for one festival for the weekend of March 6-8, 2015, one festival for a 3-day weekend in November 2015, then two 3-day festivals in March 2016, two in November 2016, two in March 2017 and two in November 2017.

A preliminary concept plan has been submitted which shows the layout for the Okeechobee Music and Funfest, identifying day parking areas, car camping areas, RV camping areas, and activity areas for the mu-sic concerts, vendor areas and emergency services. There is a separate access area for emergency services.

Access for the public will be from North-east 120th Street on to existing streets that were constructed for the subdivision. Al-though there will be noticeable traffi c on Northeast 120th Street, there should not be an impact to minor residential streets. Vehic-ular parking problems will not be created as all parking will occur on the festival site.

For other large outdoor gatherings, a number of conditions have been worked out with the property owners, the Fire Res-cue Department and the Sheriff ’s Offi ce. If the temporary use permits are approved, county staff will meet with all parties to re-view and further refi ne the conditions well before this event commences. It is the desire to minimize impacts to those living in the general area or who may be passing through during the time of the events.

Arrest Report

a capital felony, Spencer and Spivey could face an automatic sentence of life in prison if convicted. At this point it is also possible the state could seek the death penalty.

Assistant State Attorney Ashley Albright explained that since an indictment has been handed down, he and Assistant State Attor-ney Don Richardson will meet with State At-torney Bruce Colton to determine if the state will seek death.

Mr. Albright said that meeting will take place in the next couple of weeks.

The burglary and robbery charges are fi rst-degree felonies, said the prosecutor, which means Spencer and Spivey could get a maximum sentence of life in prison if found guilty on either of those charges.

“They could receive up to life, but it’s not mandatory,” he said.

The grand jury also indicted Latisha McBride, 38 on two felony counts of acces-sory after the fact.

If convicted, McBride could face a maxi-mum sentence of up to 15 years on each charge.

All three are currently being held without bond in the Okeechobee County Jail.

Okeechobee County Sheriff ’s Offi ce (OCSO) detectives theorize McBride en-tered Curry’s room at Nab’s Apartments at 580 N.E. 13th Ave. around 6 a.m. that Friday to buy drugs. Once she had made the pur-chase, Spencer and Spivey went to Curry’s room to rob him of cash and drugs.

“We believe Spencer and Spivey entered that building with weapons,” offered OCSO Detective Corporal Ted Van Deman in an earlier interview. “Those three suspects be-

lieved him (Curry) to be a drug dealer.”According to investigators Curry, a mixed

martial arts enthusiast, fought with Spen-cer, who was armed with a semi-automatic handgun. Spencer then shot Curry twice in the torso, once in the right hand and once in the right knee, stated the arrest report.

Curry, however, reportedly got the gun from Spencer and fi red back until it jammed. One round grazed the right side of Spencer’s head, while Spivey was shot in the leg, add-ed arrest reports.

The detective said at the time he did not know how much cash or what quantity of drugs were taken from Curry’s single-room apartment. Arrest reports indicate the trio made off with “... a large unknown amount of currency, crack cocaine, powder cocaine, marijuana and mollies.”

Mr. Albright explained that under Florida law a grand jury has 21 members and at least 15 have to be present to have a quo-rum. Then, at least 12 must agree on the indictment.

Cpl. Van Deman said McBride drove Spen-cer and Spivey to Highlands Regional Medi-cal Center in Sebring to have their wounds treated. However, they apparently did not know that gunshot victims must be reported to local law enforcement so the hospital then called the Highlands County Sheriff ’s Offi ce (HCSO).

That agency was then contacted by lo-cal detectives, who asked HCSO to hold the trio.

Cpl. Van Deman, along with OCSO De-tective Corporal Rosemary Farless, drove to Sebring and interviewed the three suspects at the hospital. Spencer, Spivey and McBride were then placed under arrest.

A teenage girl with a penchant for running away from the Youth Treatment Center on U.S. 441 North has been arrested for al-legedly kicking a director of that program in the face as he tried to wake her for breakfast.

Daniela Alzate, 15, was arrested Saturday, Sept. 6, on a felony charge of battery on a detention or commitment staff member. She was booked into the Okeechobee County Jail then taken to the St. Lucie Regional Detention Center in Fort Pierce.

Alzate was just in the news a couple of weeks ago when she and another 15-year-old girl at the program ran away. They ap-parently ran from the facility sometime Tues-day, Aug. 26. The facility is located at 42660 U.S. 441 N.

Both girls were recovered early Saturday, Aug. 30, in Lantana by the Lantana Police

Department.According to an arrest report by Deputy

Bart Potter, of the Okeechobee County Sher-iff ’s Offi ce (OCSO), Alzate has run from the youth facility at least three times.

Her most recent brush with the law came about after the male victim and a fe-male staff member tried to get Alzate out of bed for breakfast around 10 a.m. Saturday. When the victim told her it was time to get up and that breakfast was ready, Alzate re-portedly cursed, began to swing at him and then kicked him in the jaw area.

Deputy Potter indicated the victim later went to a hospital because his jaw was hurt-ing.

The two staff members were able to pin the girl to the fl oor, stated the report.

Deputy Potter went on to state in his re-port that the sheriff ’s offi ce has dealt with Alzate fi ve times, including the three times she has fl ed the facility, since Aug. 25.

Teen kicked man in face, said deputy

There are many reasons why a woman may have a hyster-ectomy, a surgical procedure

to remove part or all of the uterus. According to Board Certifi ed Gyne-cologist James Bradfi eld, the most common are bleeding abnormali-ties, tumors or enlargements of the uterus, problems with endome-triosis, pelvic adhesions and pelvic infections. Dr. Bradfi eld performs laparo-scopic hysterectomies at Raul-erson Hospital. The benefi ts of performing a hysterectomy using a laparoscope vs. the open ab-dominal incision include a smaller incision site, less bleeding, and a quicker recovery. In fact most laparoscopic hysterectomies are performed as outpatient proce-dures, meaning no hospital stay is

Gov. LeRoy Collins Thursday asked President Eisenhower to add Okeechobee to seven counties in South Florida eligible for an emergency cattle feed program because of rain damage.

Collins Wednesday asked the president for the program in Highlands, Glades, Hendry, Collier, DeSoto, Charlotte and Lee Counties after the U.S. Department of Agriculture di-saster committee for the state declared the ar-eas entitled to federal assistance. In a telegram to the President, Collins said, “I am advised ... that pasture lands in Okeechobee county are in a similarly ooded condition as the seven counties listed in my telegram of Jan. 8.”

OKEECHOBEE RELIEF ASKED

Mayor H.H. Raulerson is in receipt of a letter from the Interstate Commerce Commis-sion of Washington, D.C., in which they state they will hold a public hearing in Okeecho-bee on October 5 concerning the Florida East Coast Railway Company and their desire to discontinue that part of their railroad known as the Okeechobee Branch.

The meeting will be held at the court house beginning at 9:30 o’clock in the morning.

There has developed much opposition to the move to discontinue train service on this line and recently a meeting was held at Orlan-do where committees were formed to gather information to be produced at the commission hearing. Another such meeting will be held at Kissimmee tomorrow with a view of getting all facts ready for the hearing.

A large number of citizens from many sec-tions of the state will be on hand for the hear-ing here in October.

Darkevious Moreland had three touch-downs to lead the Brahman junior varsity football team to a 37-6 victory over Martin County on Sept. 4

Moreland caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kysell Richardson in the fi rst quar-ter, caught a 6-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and added a 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to lead the Brah-mans.

“It wasn’t just me,” he noted. “We have a whole team that puts in work every day in practice and we do things as a team. We all played well.”

Moreland fi nished with 68 total yards in the game.

The team was disappointed last week in a shutout loss to Vero Beach and wanted to atone this week. The defense was in the backfi eld for much of the night and harassed

the Tiger ball carriers. Richard Harris, Mateo Vasquez and Jarret Emmick were among the leading tacklers for the Brahmans.

Emmick said the team played well on both

sides of the ball.“We were pretty pumped up in the locker

room and we played our hardest,” he said.OHS got on the board early in the second

quarter after Demetrius Clark returned a Tiger punt 17 yards to the Martin County 16-yard line. Two plays later Richardson found More-land wide open in the fl at at the 10-yard line and he ran in the touchdown to put OHS in front 6-0.

“A touchdown really set up your offense and defense,” Moreland said. “I faked the de-fense when I said (out loud) I would block #30. I faked the block and cut to the out-side.”

OHS drove 66 yards in just fi ve plays on the next drive which was capped by a 30-yard touchdown pass from Richardson to Janavi-ous Futch. Jessie Mond ran in the extra point to make it 14-0 at the half.

Futch said it was a good bounce-back vic-tory for the squad.

Moreland scored a 22-yard touchdown on

a nifty pass and run in the third quarter but that was called back by penalty. Undaunted he scored two plays later on a 6-yard touch-down reception. He ran in the extra point to make it 22-0.

From there the Brahman defense held up allowing just one big play that covered 76 yards in the fi nal seven minutes of the game.

Harris said the team did their assignments and practiced hard all week to get prepared.

“We were really ready for this game and we should be ready for any team we face on our schedule from here on out,” said Harris.

Game notesDemetrius Clark had 58 yards in returns,

a 68-yard pass reception and a 32-yard pass reception in the game. Mateo Vasquez had two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack. Futch had a 47-yard punt return. Angel Garcia scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. Okeecho-bee plays at Clewiston next Thursday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

Moreland’s 3 TDs leads OHS JV in 37-6 win

• The Lady Brahman bowling team lost to Sebring 4-3 on Sept. 4. Sebring won the fi rst game 816-750 and the Lady Brahmans took the second game 804-716. Sebring won two of the three Baker games 210-156, 107-156, and 137-128. OHS coach Carole Olney said Sebring defeated Okeechobee at dis-tricts last year and she expected a very com-petitive match up.

“There was a lot of pressure on every-one involved today, but the girls were pretty evenly matched,” she said.

Jessica Olney had a high came of 198 and a 392 series for OHS. Meghen Davis had a high game of 195 and a 358 series. Olney said the match went back and forth and OHS was hurt with open frames as they couldn’t fi nish off some makeable spares.

“The only thing that beat us was we do not have self-confi dence and are not able to perform under pressure,” she added.

• The OHS boys bowling team lost at Sebring 5-2 on Thursday. Sebring won the fi rst two games 890-722 and 981-760. Okeechobee took two of the three Baker games 162-231, 161-91 and 142-85. Brian Chapman had a high game of 256 and a 452 series. Adam Simmons rolled a 301 series.

Sebring was led by Cole Rankin with a high game of 266 and a 474 series. David Daniels added a high game of 246 and a 452 series.

Olney said the boys played well with a lot of strikes and played at a high level for much of the match.

“There was a lot of energy out there and the kids were very supportive of each other. I’m very happy with what I see developing from the boys,” she added.

OHS travels to Lincoln Park on Wednes-day, Sept. 10.

• The Lady Brahmans golf team split a tri match with Martin County and Fort Pierce Central Thursday at the KOA Golf and Coun-try Club. Martin County shot 157, Okeecho-bee shot 207 and Fort Pierce had three play-ers who shot 176.

Holly Davenport shot an even par 35. Zoie McDavid fi nished with a 40, while Bri-anna Brown and Peyton Blair each carded a 41 for the Lady Tigers. Hannah Raulerson shot 44 and Cameron White 49 for OHS. Tif-fany Zeller had a 56 and Fernanda Grisales shot a 58 for OHS.

OHS coach Bruce Conrad said the team wastes too many shots each round with poor chips, three puts on the green and oth-er poor shots. He said this can be corrected and improved upon.

“We talked to the team about the wasted

shots and we lose 25-30 strokes per match. If we could eliminate 20 bad shots the team could score in the 180s,” he added.

Conrad said that will be their goal in the upcoming weeks. Winds were also unpre-dictable at the course on Thursday but the temperatures were a little cooler for the players.

• The Brahman boys cross country team fi nished 15th out of 23 teams at the Martin County Under the Lights Invitational held Friday, September 5th at Halpatiokee Park in Stuart.

Daniel Shelley led the Brahmans with a time of 18:30, good for 52nd place. Josue Santibanez fi nished the course in 18:58 and fi nished in 65th place. Brendan Patterson fi nished with a time of 19:25 to fi nish 87th. Isaac Garcia fi nished 90th with a time of 19:28.

Pine Crest was the team champion of the event. Victor Nunez led the Brahman junior varsity team with a 16th place fi nish and a time of 19:52. The JV team fi nished ninth out of 17 teams.

• The Lady Brahman cross country team fi nished 18th out of 21 in the girl’s race. Alexis Muller led OHS with a time of 24:03 good for 76th place. Charleigh Heat-er fi nished 94th with a time of 24:46. Ruth Palacios fi nished 116th with a time of 26:11.

Carrie Wharin took 119th place with a time of 26:21.

• The Okeechobee Youth Football League took two out of fi ve contests against Sebring Saturday in games played at Fire-men’s Field. The Sebring teams won the fl ag, 25-6, the Mighty Mites 40-0 and the Se-nior game 14-13. Okeechobee prevailed in the Pee Wee Division, 18-7 and the junior’s contest 12-6.

The Okeechobee Wildcats youth football team has started off with strong results in the Glades Tri County Youth Football league this year. The 7-8 year old team has started 1-2 with a victory over Moore Haven. The 9-10 year old team is also 1-2 with their lone victory over Moore Haven. The older boys, ages 11-12 are 2-0 with victories over Paho-kee and Moore Haven. Caleb Cruz is off to a good start for the 7- and 8-year-old team and Leon Edwards is off to a strong start for the 9- to 10-year-old team. The Wildcats are scheduled to host teams from Cape Coral on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the soccer complex across from North Elementary School with games to start at 10 a.m.

• The OHS cross country program willhost a 5 K fundraiser this Saturday at the Agri-Civic Center. For information contact the high school or coach A.J Mayernik at 412-225-7258.
