The Wild Wild West Art2Wear night held on the 9 th May initially involved all members of the Art Group encouraging and helping everyone from the young to older community members to make art garments suitable to parade from all sorts of recycled and other materials. For months at the beginning of the year the group worked tirelessly, going into the Lake Grace District High School to assist students in their creations. Using their imagination they produced some amazing costumes which were ultimately presented at a spectacular event to themed music and lighting at the Lake Grace Hall to a crowd of over 100 community members. The event was then invited out to the Newdegate Machinery Field Day in September resulting in winning the Environmental Award for schools and $300 for the Lake Grace District High School. Editorial Welcome back! We have had a phenomenal response from our subscribers and those who put ‗stuff‘ in the

paper...I had thought we‘d be able to kick back and cruise our way through a slimline edition. Alas I was rudely awakened and we have been slogging away in an attempt to look organised. Thank you to everyone for their submissions.

Could anyone walking their dog past the Telecentre please pick up after their four legged friend. There has been an abundance of dog poo on the lawn which isn‘t nice for anyone, especially whoever is mowing the lawn. It also means anyone wanting to make use of the shade on the lawn isn‘t able to.

If you have an adolescent ready to do their drivers licence please make sure that they bring their original documents in for ID. A birth extract or certificate is needed plus something with their street/road address such as a bank statement or an ATM card. All of the information for what is needed is in the Drive Safe handbook.

The Shire of Lake Grace‘s last council meeting for 2010 was well attended for public question time by members of both the Newdegate and Lake Grace communities anxious to see what would come of the motion to push forward for a new medical centre for Newdegate.

With a budget of $500,000 put aside for the project it was an item of concern that the lowest tender came in at $774,685; a difference of $274,685 that could put considerable financial strain on ratepayers by driving up the loan/debt ratio and perhaps put future projects at risk. Added to the higher than expected costs was the realisation that forthcoming Royalties for Regions regional funding had come under a cloud and that the Shire had been rejected for a $300,000 Federal grant that was to go toward the project. Budgeted funding for the project is $250,000 from Country Local Government (R4R), $125,000 from the Newdegate Field Day Committee and $125,000 from a Shire loan; Council will have to facilitate further loans for any shortfall in funding for this project.

Councillors Chamberlain and Newman put forward a notice of motion that the Shire of Lake Grace proceed as soon as possible and accept the tender from Cimeco Pty Ltd as per tender specifications and that the Lake Grace Shire raise a loan to facilitate any short fall in the funding required to complete the project.

Although Council is united in its desire to provide a medical facility for the community of Newdegate and surrounding areas Councillors Milton and Farrelly believed it was appropriate for further investigation of suitable construction types and put forward a motion to support this, requesting that a report be presented at the February council meeting with result of investigation.

Current facilities for the medical practice in Newdegate are quite dismal, but with the Doctor attending one day per week for 48 weeks of the year along with other services such as Allied Health, HACC and Southern AgCare there were concerns from ratepayers that a lot of money was being expended on a brick building when alternative building materials could just as easily serve the purpose.

Mr Gary Batt, architect for the project, felt that there was pride in brick and that his plans were done in keeping with the remainder of the town. Long term plans are that improvements to the Town Hall would be done to match in with the Medical Centre and that a retirement village also be built. Mr Batt believed that these buildings would then become the centrepiece of the Newdegate community.

All the Newdegate community wants is better facilities for their Medical Centre and concerns raised by observer Mrs Helen Mc Donald is that these costs are not going to get any cheaper as time goes by. The motion put forward by Councillors Chamberlain and Newman to go ahead with the tender was voted 5-4 in the affirmative.

Lake Grace may be 250 kms inland but local business is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the boat building industry.

Darryl and Sandra Helms, along with their daughters Brittney, Chantelle, Brielle and son Jed commissioned Lake Grace Engineering to build them a pleasure craft that will give them the opportunity to cruise to more distant horizons.

The 8.9m Seabreeze took 1500 hours to build; has 3 cabins with the capability of sleeping 7, 16 sealed compartments and has state of the art 3-D electronics. Local tradesmen have enjoyed being a part of the project, the largest boat to have been built by Lake Grace Engineering.

It has been a team effort with Brent Duckworth of Lakeside Auto Electrics laying around 400m of wiring; Cabinet Maker Steve Clunie has installed the cupboards which are made from Tasmanian Oak with a stained finish while Peter Hudson‘s Tyrepower provided the wheels for the boat trailer. The only work on the boat that was outsourced was the windows and upholstery.

The yet to be named vessel, along with its 3.1m dinghy are powered by Suzuki with Lake Grace Engineering‘s Clint Earnshaw saying that from past experience it‘s the only motor he would go with.

With a tank capable of holding 850L fuel, the boat is able to slow cruise 1,000 nautical miles, it also carries 480L of water and has 3 solar panels to power the fridges and freezers.

Oriel (Shippy) McWilliam 2nd December 1928 - 14th December 2009

Oriel was born in Narrogin Hospital on the 2nd December 1928, the only daughter of Joseph and Ellen Shipley of Yealering. She attended primary school in Yealering with her three brothers, no doubt travelling by horse and sulky or riding a push bike. At 12 years of age she was sent to Albany Senior High School, catching the train in Narrogin at the beginning of each term. While in Albany Oriel studied for and gained both her Junior and Leaving Certificates. On returning home she became a teachers‘ assistant at the local school. After some time had passed Oriel decided that this was not her vocation and applied to do her nursing training at Fremantle Hospital. Three years later she qualified as a State Registered Nurse. Then as most nurses did in those days she went on to study midwifery. This time at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. On her return to Western Australia Oriel nursed in several country hospitals including Geraldton, Lake Grace and Corrigin. While in Lake Grace, working at the old hospital she met Gordon and they married in Perth in 1957; just reaching the milestone of fifty two years of happy marriage in December. Their first home was on Harry Marshall‘s farm where Gordon was employed. They eventually purchased a house in Bennett Street where they lived until 1999. Oriel was the mother of four children, Barbara, Lindsay and twins Rosie and Brett. Although a busy person she found time to belong to and work the numerous organisations in town namely Red Cross, Hospital Auxillary and the Anglican Guild. Her most passionate cause became the restoration of the old hospital into the Australian Mission Hospital Museum as it is today.

She was fondly known to all as ―Shippy‖. After the children had grown up Oriel went b a c k t o nursing, this time at the new hospital in Lake Grace. On the leisure side, bowls became an important pastime and over the years she was in teams that won the Club Triples Championships in 1983, 1992 and 1993; the Club Fours Championship in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993 and 1994. Oriel was always available to help with the bowling club steak nights. After Brett‘s serious accident Oriel and Gordon sold their house and went to live in Rockingham to be close to him. For the next eight years Oriel spent almost every day at Brett‘s bedside tending to his needs and making sure that he knew that he was loved and cared for. We pay tribute to a dedicated and caring mother!!! On returning to Lake Grace to live late last year Oriel took great delight in being back with some of her family and in the renovations they were making to their house in Elliott Street. She was grandmother to eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Sadly her health began to fail and she passed away in Bunbury on December 14th 2009. Shippy was a quiet but special person in Lake Grace and loved by all.

Marjorie Emily Hall was born on the 24th March 1924 at her Grandmother‘s house in Palmyra, with her Grandmother assisting the Midwife. She was born with the cord around her neck, and while it took quite some time for her to take her first breath and cry, when she did, her mother said she didn‘t stop crying for at least three months!! Marjorie was the middle child with brother Tom the oldest and sister Olive the youngest. The early years of her childhood were spent in Pemberton where her parents owned a garage and carrying business. After her father lost his arm in an accident, the family shifted to Perth. Upon completing her schooling, Marj worked at Boans in the kitchenware department and when she turned 18, she joined the Australian Women‘s Army Service and was posted to Victoria. She served for four years (from 1942-1946) in the army as a Morse Code and Switch board Operator.

When she was discharged from the army, she returned to W.A. Here she met her husband Ray, and they were married on the 28th August 1948.

18 months into their marriage Ray‘s father bought an adjoining farm in Lake Grace and offered them the chance to go farming – albeit it with a large debt attached!! They had never considered farming, but after the initial shock, farming became their way of life. Ray and Marj had four children; the first two Nancy and Phil are twins. Nancy decided to come at eight months and was born on the 10th April 1951. Phil stayed behind and was only too pleased to have all that room to himself, until he was forcibly made to vacate his warm abode and was born on the 21st April 1951, 11 days later. The twins births made news in England, the Eastern States and locally. Four years later Jill was born, followed by Doug another four years later. And with this, her family was complete.

The support of neighbours and friends has always been a big part of country life and Marj recalls when she was heavily pregnant being taken across the flooded lakes in a galvanized bathtub by Ray, to be collected on the other side by Pat Strevett and whisked off to a Doctors appointment. There was very little of anything on farms initially – no water, power or phones. After a few years things

began to change and a phone service w a s p r o v i d e d w h e r e b y t w o exchanges were installed – but needed to be operated manually. Marj operated one of these exchanges for 10 years, and over that time really e n j o y e d t h e comradeship of the subscribers, who were mainly neighbours. In 1980 Ray and Marj moved into town. Ray designed the house and did all the tiling and wrought iron work. Marj became engrossed in the garden.

Sadly after a battle with cancer, Ray passed away in 1980, leaving Marj widowed at a fairly early age. She also cared for her aged Mother in her final four years.

A good game of Scrabble filled in many an afternoon with her friends, and every Friday night was cards night. Right to the very end, her family needed to have a lot of luck to beat her at Scrabble or any card game. Marj was always very proud of her family. She had nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and she was very much involved in all of their lives. Be it making costumes for school plays, or walking up and down the side of the pool, while barracking incredibly loudly at school swimming carnivals – or just singing and dancing while playing the organ, she was very much an involved Grandma and Nanna. She visited Nancy and Viv in Queensland quite regularly and they took her on a trip to America, which she thoroughly enjoyed and relived for many years. She liked to keep fit and very much enjoyed swimming and water aerobics in the summer months at the local pool. Here she was often joined by visiting granddaughters and made the paper when two more generations of her family joined her for aerobics classes. In the winter months she could be seen in the early morning going for power walks with her friends. It was quite common when family visited and decided to join her, they had great difficulty keeping up with her fast pace! She loved her bowls and became a National Umpire

and also a Coach. Upon giving away Coaching, she held various positions of Office including President of the Arunga League, President of Lake Grace, Captain of the Match Committee and a position on the Management Committee. With all this, she was also a Bowls Life Member.

As the years went on her health deteriorated and she was flown to Perth where she stayed with her daughter Jill for 15 months. Jill made many changes to her family life to ensure Marj was cared for, as it was a 24 hour commitment. Your dedication Jill was so much appreciated by your Mum and the whole family. Eventually she needed more care and moved into Kelmscott River Gardens. This became home to her and she enjoyed the lifestyle and company. Still full of life and a sense of adventure, any outings or functions which came along, she was the first to put up her hand to go. She was a popular resident known for her friendly and cheeky nature. It was always a pleasure for her when family called in or took her out when they were in Perth. After 85 wonderful years and deteriorating health, Marjorie Emily called it a day on Monday 28th December 2009. She will be greatly missed but so fondly remembered. She was a wonderful lady, who touched the hearts of many people – and was loved very much by them all.

Lake Grace community celebrates its centenary in 2011. This year, as a lead in to the centenary, the Lakes Link News will feature and collect stories about the 100 years of Lake Grace history since European settlement in 1911.

Lake Grace 100 Years Celebrations - 2011 The Lake Grace 100 Years celebrations will include small events throughout 2011 and a main event during the October long weekend. Commemorative projects include a book, calendar, medallions and a three dimensional model or map of the district. A major project will be an Agri-Art competition.

Lake Grace 100 Years Book This will be eclectic and feature a variety of material including stories, facts, photos, maps, recipes and letters. The book committee has selected eight themes for the book. These themes will also be relevant for the Agri-Art and the Calendar.

Local people are invited to write short stories about their experiences related to any of the themes. Documents can include maps, lease agreements, advertisements, ration cards, recipes, letters, newspapers and event programs. These all show a picture of our community.

We are not just seeking ‗old‘ photographs and documents - history is about anything that happened up to the present day. And don‘t be put off if the photograph is overexposed or crooked - it may be the only one of a significant event, building or person.

If you have any relevant photographs or documents, we encourage you to take them to Lake Grace Telecentre to be scanned. Lake Grace Telecentre staff will digitally record the images and documents to archive quality. Telecentre staff will also record the relevant details and the significance of the photograph or document. You will be asked to sign a form that allows the Shire of Lake Grace to reproduce the photograph for the 100 Years project or for local history projects.

Agri-Art Competition Farmers are invited to transform their paddocks for the Agri-Art competition. Agri-Art can include designs or patterns created in crops or pasture though planting or harvesting, as well as hay bale and machinery installations. The project will commence as a trial in 2010 followed by the main project in 2011. This project, which will create dramatic designs in our landscape, is open to everybody – if you are interested in being involved, contact Lindsay Slarke – Tel: 9865 1170.

Calendar Photography Competition Local photographers are urged to start clicking for the Lake Grace Centenary. Lake Grace 100 Years committee invites you to submit your best photographs for a Centenary Calendar competition. Prizes will be awarded for the best photographs.

SCIENCE AND STUFF ORIGINS OF BONE: Structure, strength and storage in one package: A social gathering in the Cambrian era, beginning some 540 million years ago, might have resembled an underwater war game – all life resided in the ocean then and almost every creature present would have been wearing some sort of external armour, complete with spiked helmets. The ancestors of insects and crustaceans wore full exoskeletons, probably made from a mixture of protein and chitin like the shells of modern lobsters. Star fishlike organisms and molluscs manufactured their body armour from calcium carbonate extracted from seawater. Even one evolutionary dead-end, the ostracoderm, managed somehow to swim while encased in scales and heavy plates made of true bone—that is, mineralized cartilage rich in calcium and phosphates. It was the mild-mannered softies of the period, however, that would first develop internal bones. Wormlike organisms, such as the conodonts started to mineralize the cartilage surrounding their primitive spinal cords, becoming the first vertebrates. Bony cranial coverings came next, and other creatures with more extensive cartilaginous internal skeletons soon followed suit. Because these swimmers used muscle contractions to propel themselves, having muscles anchored to solid bone would have provided greater strength. The hardened skeleton also offered a more solid scaffold for bodies to grow larger and to diversify, adding limbs to their repertoires. Serving as a massive and highly responsive storage depot for critical minerals, particularly calcium, is a role that likely evolved later but is now one of the most important functions of human bones. Without calcium, the heart cannot beat and brain cells cannot fire, so far from being inert, bone is in constant flux between growth and self-demolition to meet the body‘s needs and to maintain its own structure cells called osteoclasts (―bone breakers‖ which destroy old and dead bone tissue) and osteoblasts (―bone growers‖ which give rise to new bone cells). Working together, these cells replace about 10 percent of the skeleton every year. In the short term, if blood calcium levels are too low, osteoclasts destroy bone to release mineral. Conversely, if exercise produced larger muscles, osteoblasts get to work building new bone to withstand their pull. (Christine Soares, Scientific American). HOW JANE AUSTEN DIED: Jane Austen has long been thought to have died of Addison‘s disease, which disrupts the adrenal gland. But Katherine White of the Addison‘s Disease Self-help Group in the UK disagrees. Addison‘s causes confusion, but Austen wrote that she had a ―clear head‖ and dictated comic verse before she died. Instead, she died from tuberculosis, says White. IF THAT GENE is from your dad, your risk of diabetes

goes up: Pondering whether a baby got mum or dad‘s eyes may seem like idle speculation, but knowing which parent certain genes come from can tell you about your risk of disease. Some variants are even two-faced, boosting the risk if they come from one parent but cutting it if they come from the other. It is already known that the same gene variant can behave differently depending on which parent it came from, due to a process called imprinting-which determines which of the parent‘s genes are expressed in the child. Now a team led by Kari Stefansson at deCODE genetics in Reykjavik, Iceland, has looked at hundreds of thousands of single-letter DNA variations to examine how imprinting affects the risk of disease. For 38,000 Icelanders, his team determined whether these variations came from the mother or father, and looked for correlations with disease. The researchers identified at least five variations whose correlation with a certain disease depended on whether the gene is maternal or paternal. An earlier study that didn‘t take parental influence into account found one variant on chromosome 11 raised the risk of breast cancer by 7 per cent. Stefansson‘s study shows that in fact ups the risk by 17 per cent if inherited from the father but protects against the disease if it comes from the mother. The team also found disease-linked variants that other studies had missed. One of these boosts a person‘s risk of type 2 diabetes by 41 per cent, but only if they inherit it from the father (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature08624). BLIND MOLE VISION: A mole species whose eyelids are permanently closed that can see after all, has been found by researchers. Iberian moles use their light-sensitive cells to tell night from day and to avoid light. EAT PROTEIN TO HEAL A DAMAGED BRAIN: A diet of chicken, fish and protein shakes might do wonders for people with brain injuries. Akiva Cohen of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his colleagues mimicked brain injury in mice by injecting fluid through their skull. Compared with control mice, they had much lower levels of three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) found in protein rich food. The team then fed another set of brain-injured mice either plain water or water enriched with BCAAs. Five days later, those that had taken BCAAs had normal levels of the amino acids and performed better on a learning task (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, DOI: 10.1073/pnas). SMALLEST FLOWER: You‘d have to be a very light-fingered thief to steal this orchid. Discovered hidden in the roots of a larger plant in Cerro Candelaria nature reserve in the eastern Andes, Ecuador, Platystele is the world‘s smallest orchid. The flower is 2.1 millimetres wide and has transparent petals a mere one cell thick

Quips, Quotes & Antidotes For you people who like to delve into the past come with me to the year of 1996, the month February. This was the year a very infant Lakes Link was being published out of the building situated on the corner of Bennett and McMahon streets. The Editor/Coordinator at the time was Mrs Christine Keen and like now, a team of volunteers helped to produce the local newspaper.

I mention the month of February as this was the month an ambition of mine came into fruition, that is to write articles for the local paper. With the help of Christine the column ‘Quips, Quotes and Antidotes‘ became a reality in the hallowed pages of the ‗Link‘. I for one must confess that the first few columns were pretty novice but with the help of Christine and others it started to develop and to my surprise was being received by ‗my‘ public with good response and comments from many.

As time progressed and my life changed due to working and travelling to all parts of the greatest land on Earth, Australia, my little column was bound for the archives of the Lakes Link.

But my Daddy always said ‗Good things come to those who wait‘, and guess what? You have waited long enough and with the blessing of the present inspirational management of the Links, ‗Quips, Quotes & Antidotes‘ will do a Lazarus and rise again to bring to you beneficial facts, interesting articles, humorous stories and most of all some laughs into your day. So here is the first bit of never to be forgotten advice, ‗If you are not laughing you are not living!!‘

So I invite you to share with me these pages of wit and wisdom in the coming editions of the Link and if you have any contributions you thin may interest others I will be happy to share them with all.

Some of the other notable events occurring at the beginning of 1996 were: 1. The Lake Grace Craft Supplies was up for sale.

2. Dr Warrick Beares started a practice in Lake Grace 3. The official opening of the Pingaring water pipe line. 4. Jeanette Trevenen held a bridal revue night at the

Lake Grace Hall. 5. Helen Rose Bennett celebrated her 40th birthday. 6. Peter Taylor was Shire President. 7. Len Elliott and John Kellow were recognised for 50

years service to Lake Grace‘s St John Ambulance. 8. Shirley Elliott awarded Citizen of the Year. 9. Maalouf Ford advertised *free 12 months license

*free mud flaps bonnet & head light covers *free floor mats and a full tank of fuel.

10.Tulloch‘s Fish & Chip shop (Old Pioneer) burnt down.

So you long time residents of Lake Grace...how many of these events do you remember?

As you will find out as we get t know each other through ‗Quips, Quotes and Antidotes‘ that I love to laugh so to finish off this edition have you heard this one.

There’s these two blokes out in the bush, not looking where they’re going, and one of them falls down an old mine shaft. His mate peers down, and there’s the bloke flat on his back at the bottom of the shaft. So he drops a rope down to him and says he’ll pull him up. “I can’t hold the rope,” says the bloke. “I’ve broken both me arms.” “Well grip it with your legs,” says the bloke up the top. “I can’t. Both me legs is broke.” “Well then, grip it in yer teeth,” his mate calls down. So the feller down the shaft sinks his choppers into the rope, and his mate starts pulling him up. It’s real hard work, though, so when he’s got the bloke about halfway he stops for a breather. “Are you OK?” he sings out. The bloke says: “Ye-e-aahhhh!”

That‘s it folks, you be nice to each other.

Round two of the Soil Conservation Incentives Program is now open. Applications for up to $50 000 are sought from farmer groups and individuals to demonstrate management practices that help to control wind erosion. The three main themes that applicants can access funding under are:

Integrating tree crops into farm systems;

Recommended grazing management practices; and

Recommended cropping management practices.

It is anticipated that farmers will demonstrate innovative or underutilized practices or technologies that are appropriate for soils at risk to wind erosion. Applicants are encouraged to work in groups to share their experiences and encourage the adoption of farming practices that reduce wind erosion to their local community.

Round one of the program was very competitive with less than half of the projects submitted being approved for funding. To assist prepare an expression of interest, interested parties are encouraged to contact project partners that are listed in the guidelines including Western Australian No-Till Farming Association, AVONGRO, Oil Mallee Association, Forest Products Commission and the Department of Agriculture and Food WA.

The official launch of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month started Monday 1st February 2010. February is Ovarian Cancer Australia's Awareness Month, which includes a range of events, community activities and media campaigns around Australia to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms. Politicians, TV personalities and members of the public will all be invited to wear a teal ribbon on Wednesday 25 February. Teal is the international colour for ovarian cancer. A key initiative is the launch of the ―Symptom Diary‖, which you can obtain from the sites below to be used by to increase awareness of the symptoms of the disease. Every woman needs to know the symptoms of ovarian cancer. One in 70 women will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetime. It could be you, your sister, your mum, your gran or your girlfriend. Every year in Australia around 1500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and more than 850 women will die from the disease. Unfortunately, when most women are diagnosed, their cancer will be at an advanced stage, where the cancer has spread and is very difficult to treat successfully. More than half these women will not live for five years after their diagnosis. But... if ovarian cancer is found in the early stages, up to 95% of women will be alive and

well after five years. More women need to be diagnosed at an early stage when ovarian cancer is very treatable. There is currently no reliable early detection test or screening program for ovarian cancer. Until there is a test, awareness is best. Ovarian cancer has previously been called a silent killer, but we now know that the symptoms are NOT silent. Almost all women with ovarian cancer experience symptoms, even in the early stages. Because it is difficult to detect in its early stages, there are more deaths from ovarian cancer than any other gynaecological cancer. In WA in 2006, 117 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 71 died from the disease. A family history of ovarian cancer may increase your risk. Having few or no pregnancies, early age at first period and/or late menopause increases the amount of eostrogen you are exposed to over your lifetime, which can in turn increase your risk of ovarian cancer. There are sites on the internet explaining the symptoms and where you can download the symptom diary. They are: www.ovariancancer. www.healthinsite.gov.au www.healthinsite.gov.au

A very late start to the cropping season, low rainfall, poor yields and a low grain price has conspired against the community crop in its second year of operation.

The Newdegate Research Station leased all bar one paddock to the Lake Grace and Newdegate Community Cropping Projects in the second year of the lease. This was an increase of 150 ha for the Lake Grace project and took the total hectares cropped to 553ha.

Weed control issues in year one saw the groups tactics change to a full on assault on weeds pre crop emergence. Paddocks with a very high weed seed burden were burnt, and the plan was to use a ―double knock‖ technique pre seeding (two full weed control sprays on emerged weeds before sowing). The double knock plus the robust chemical rates for pre sowing chemicals, tactical in crop herbicide use, high seeding rates and the use of weed competitive wheat and barley varieties were in the plan.

Then came the season. With breaking rains not coming until the end of June the agronomy team held off seeding until the first week of July to get some weed control (no weeds had germinated). The tactic worked reasonably well with only 12 ha of in crop herbicide used. But with such a late sowing date we were banking on rain falling into October and hopefully November. It was not to be, and like so many other crops in the district the biomass (amount of plant matter) was there but the yield was not.

The end result was respectable given the season but disappointing with 285tonnes of wheat (0.91t/ha) and 275tonnes of feed barley (1.16t/ha) delivered to CBH.

What does this mean for the community cropping project. Financially we cleared approximately $60K in the first year of the project. All of these funds and some end of year financing by agri companies was needed to pay for the inputs for year 2 of the project (larger area). With the grain in storage from the 2nd year crop, the marketing of the grain will be the key to how the project ends up at the end of year 2. With the current market conditions we are aiming to protect the year 1 profit, pay all the costs for the expanded year 2 project and

hopefully make a small profit for year 2 to add to year 1. Realistically the project in year 2 will be a break even year.

Where do we go in 2010? Both the Lake Grace and Newdegate Community Cropping Projects have jointly attempted to negotiate with the Department of Agriculture and Food for lease extensions (beyond the 3 years of the current lease). To date we have been unsuccessful in achieving this objective. The community is committed to the lease costs for the third year, and given the uncertainty of tenure it is planned for the whole program to be cropped in 2010.

The Lake Grace Community Cropping Project (LGCCP) operates under the umbrella of the Lake Grace Development Association (LGDA). The lease with the Department of Agriculture and Food is held by the Shire of Lake Grace (for both Lake Grace and Newdegate). All profits from the cropping project (not required for the operation of the project) will be channelled through the LGDA for distribution to the community under a local community grants scheme. As all funds will be needed to fund inputs for year 3 of the project, we do not anticipate there being a round of grants until after the crop from the 2010 harvest has been sold.

To get to where we are we have many people to thank for all their donations and efforts. All machinery that is used in the project is cost free to the project; however we do cover the fuel cost of operating the machinery. The LGCCP has a practice of rotating the chemical and fertiliser suppliers on a yearly basis to support multiple agribusinesses.

Thankyou Thank you to the following people, companies and organisations for you efforts in helping with the community crop.

Lake Grace Artists’ Group notes

Just a short note to welcome everyone back from their Christmas and New Year break. If you weren‘t able to make it to the Australia Day breakfast at the pool recently, we‘re proud to announce that the Lake Grace Artists’ Group received the Australia Day shire award for Community Group and Event of the year – for our Art 2 Wear and Art In Motion projects in 2009. Needless to say, these events wouldn‘t have happened without the dedicated work by a handful of art group members, so well done girls. Which leads to our next big event: the Art Group AGM, Tuesday February 9th at 9.30am at the Artspace. Please make an effort to get to this meeting and, in the coming few days, have a think about your role with the art group and how you could contribute to the program in 2010. We‘ve got quite a few people that need a well-earned break from committee positions, so if you‘ve yet to have a go please give it some thought. We‘ve not got quite as big a year planned (though we never do, do we?) and previous position-holders will be able to give you all the help you need – you won‘t be thrown in the deep end. Also, if you’re looking to find out more about what the art group does and how you can get involved, the AGM will be a good time to pop into the art space and get to know a few people. New members are always welcome.

Last of all, (if you hadn‘t noticed) our visiting Dutch artists Wouter Osterholt and Elke Uitentuis have finished their residency with us, but they‘ll continue to work on their hand-knotted rug (made from home-spun local wool) in the coming months. They‘ll continue to trace the live export trade journey from farm to market by taking the completed rug to Bahrain in November this year to be part of the Muslim Festival Eidal-Ad-ha. To keep up to date with the project, make sure you visit Wouter and Elke’s website at: http://wouterelke.nl/lakegrace/ (if you get onto the site, you‘ll be able to see the article about Wouter and Elke‘s residency that was recently published in the Countryman). So, until the AGM… Sarah Allen

Welcome to a new fresh year at the Lake Grace Shire Visitor Information Centre and a very warm ―welcome back‖ to all our volunteers. We also welcome Stephanie Clarke our new Manager for the Visitor Centre, representing the Lake Grace Shire, Stephanie will be available at the Centre two

Thank you to all who supported the Visitor Centre over the Christmas Season. We are currently replenishing our stocks and the shelves will be overflowing with a variety of locally made produce items very soon. We are always on the look out for more volunteers to help keep the centre open. It is a fantastic way to meet new people. If you are interested in joining or would like some more information please see any of the volunteers or phone Mary on 9865 1321. All help is very much appreciated.

Thank you, Trish

Productivity losses from increasing saline areas and patches are now prevalent across the majority of cropping lands in the WA wheat belt.

Scientists and farmers working together on Soil Salinity issues are achieving success in overcoming the difficulty of crop establishment and the lowering of yield by using modified cropping inputs.

Burt Naude Soil Scientist from Adelaide SA is leading pilot programs with selected farmers in SA and WA to reduce cropping losses from the incidence of Saline soil encroachment. Burt Naude comments ―Salinity problems in the Australian landscape are increasing. Having specialized in management of salinity in mine rehabilitation work in South Africa, I experienced that we were unable to provide any lasting outcomes, despite exorbitant budgets per hectare and very high inputs of fertilisers, lime and other minerals - up to 150 tonne per hectare of lime. Even these high applications did not overcome the salinity. When we began to utilise specific soil biology and humic inputs the improvement was quick, successful and more importantly, it lasted! We were able to get plants to grow extremely well in a short space of time in seriously degraded soils.‖

Burt now consults with farmers through a leading Australian Biological Company, LawrieCo., and will be a Key Speaker at Lake Grace, Feb 16th starting at 9am.

Yield mapping of cropping in saline soils, demonstrating

yield improvements with biological inputs to crops grown on undulating sand with saline flats will be discussed. Examples of WA pilot work in crop and pasture establishment in soils where previously nothing would grow.

―We focus on physical and chemical aspects in soils, also, the third ‗leg‘ that needs to be addressed is the soil biology. At our upcoming visit to the region I look forward to sharing this technology and outcomes with local farmers‖.

Burt is a co author of a Research Report on Biologic Farming Systems. For further information: www.lawrieco.com.au or ph 8244 8558

From the CEO’s Desk It is hard to believe that the first month of 2010 has gone already. Last week the Shire issued to all residents a newsletter on its achievements for 2009 and a summary of what is planned for 2010. What is clear at this point is that the next 12 months is once again shaping up to be one of challenge and interest against the backdrop of local government reform. The Shire has signed an agreement with Wheatbelt NRM to deliver outcomes under the Commonwealth Government’s Caring for our Country Scheme including strategies to deal with soil erosion. As such the Commonwealth has provided funding to employ an NRM Officer part time to help deliver these outcomes. Marcus Owen has been appointed to this position and will help local land holders in Lake Grace and neighbouring shires improve their knowledge regarding soil management. The Commonwealth Government has advised that it will commence preparation in the next parliamentary cycle of four questions to go to referendum to amend the Australian Constitution including the formal recognition of local government. At the time of Federation in 1901, local government was left out of the Constitution and relegated to the responsibility of the states and territories. Formal recognition under the Constitution will mean continued funding to local government and an opportunity to take advantage of other funding streams as well as reinforce its role as the closest level of government to the people. The Shire along with all local governments in Australia will be involved in the process of Constitutional recognition. As always, if you need further information regarding any of the above please contact me at the Shire Office on 9890 2500.

The Year of Women in Local Government 2010 is designed to raised the awareness of the local government sector on the value and contribution of all women employed, elected and involved in local government. To celebrate the launch a morning tea will be held with staff and elected members at the Lake Grace Telecentre on Friday 5 February. All present will be addressed by guest speakers, local author Fiona Palmer and Shire CEO Sean Fletcher. The Shire of Lake Grace look forward to supporting events and activities throughout 2010 that will essentially promote, encourage and celebrate women in the local government sector. Nadene Owen, Manager Community Services.

How to be Phone Smart:

Keep personal details private e.g. name, address, bank de-tails, school, unless the person who you are talking to is a friend and you have met them more then once. Don’t accept offers that seems too good to be true as it most probably is e.g. a free mobile phone. Be aware of your surroundings if talking on your mobile and guard your privacy of the conversation, not everyone needs to know what your talking about. Only send messages, photos, music that you would like re-ceiving and tell someone if you receive nasty or bullying text messages, don’t respond as it adds fuel to the other person’s fire.

How to be Internet Smart: Check with a guardian or parent before giving out personal details because remember the people you meet in a chat room may not be who they say they are. Check with a parent / guardian before giving out this information. What you post may also be able to be viewed by others so keep a keen eye on what you post on the internet such as photos, status or comments about people. Decide if you want your profile public or private, with private you are more in control on who views and can make com-ments on your profile. Only post blogs or comments that you would like to receive from people, be yourself but play it safe.

Parent Tips– Who are your kids really talking to?

Find out if you can access the ‘adult’ content or other services offered can be managed or switched off. Offer support and let them know its not good if they receive disturbing material and that they can talk to you whenever something they feel is troubling.

Stay involved with your kids in the new world of different tech-nology, ask them to show you how to social network. Give help in setting up your kids account or learn while they are setting up one of their own. Check the privacy settings on their profile and talk to your child about the websites they have joined, what they like about them and see if they realize some of the dangers of these websites. It is a great way for your child to keep in contact with school friends and other family members so remember to keep the communication lines open to one another all the time so the child won’t fear away because they are scared they will be in automatic trouble.

For Art in Motion, held during the windy month of October, the Artist Group exhibited many forms of wind art in an outdoor exhibition around the town of Lake Grace, with continued works popping up during the month. The aim of this was to take advantage of one the windiest months of the year while raising awareness of the great diversity art can take. Many passing tourists as well as locals were heard to comment on the wonderful effort and presentation of the outdoor exhibition, saying ―it should be left up permanently‖. For the event finale the Artists‘ Group once again encouraged children and parents to spend quality time together, with over 45 people creating kites on the morning of Saturday 31st October. Kites were made out of readily available materials like plastic bags, straws, thick paper and cane in an effort to promote a healthy, cheap, fun and achievable activity for anyone to do. During the day they also hosted the Denmark Arts Group members in an effort to strengthen ties with other country Towns. Participants were then able to cycle or walk up to the oval to enjoy a sausage sizzle and fly their kite for the afternoon. The Lake Grace Artists‘ Group continually provides an avenue to create community pride, education and artistic awareness through cultural pursuits at a community level. Nomination for Amanda Trevenen Amanda is the volunteer coordinator of the Lake Grace FESA Cadets, of which she has willingly coordinated for the last three years. Managing cadet activities every Monday after School during the school year, arranging guest speakers and organising weekend events for the group such as a team building camp at Dwellingup and a three-day camp and hike at Manjimup. Each year Amanda nominates Lake Grace youth to sail on the Leeuwin – for them a life changing experience. She also promotes the Cadets program at Newdegate

Machinery Field Days. The Lake Grace FESA Cadet program fosters leadership, goal setting, and building self-esteem. It teaches participants skills in bush survival and rescue skills and provides local youth with alternative social, leisure and cultural activities. The Lake Grace Cadets have become a Key part of the community‘s ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day commemorations. The group‘s involvement provides an intergeneration aspect to the event, particularly relevant as the Returned Service League membership is decreasing. Amanda coordinates the cadets‘ role in these events including drills, marching, speeches and uniforms. Amanda, with other members of the Lake Grace Sporting Precincts Focus Group, is involved in the stage two development of the Lake Grace Sporting Precinct providing community direction and consultation to the project. Amanda has been President of the Lake Grace/Pingrup Netball Club for the last two years and represents the Lake Grace/Pingrup Netball Club at Ongerup Netball Association level and this year coached the B Grade netball team. In addition to these activities, Amanda teaches (part-time and relief) at Lake Grace District High School and with husband Chris is the parent of a young daughter.

Nearly as Exciting as Opening Christmas Presents Probably in my case it‘s more exciting, and it has been going on for months. Can you imagine what it is like to get all these little bags (some not so little) and boxes, given to you on a regular bases, well I do, and it is very exciting. Majority of people will think I am strange, different or straight out crazy, yes some of it is true, but I don‘t mind as I continue to collect all the treasures given to me so generously. When you open each bag or box it contains an array of colours shapes and sizes, some I have no idea where they may have come from or what they may have come off, but their collection of jewel like colours continue to entice me. I sort the different shapes, sizes and materials; both plastic and metal. What am I talking about are all those lovely lids that everyone, maybe not all, has been collecting for me for the last 2 years. And yes, they are gifts from the heart, as not every one is generous enough to make the effort or take the time to collect all their lids into a bag or container and drop it off. I know there are many people helping by the many bags I get and it is amazing how quickly those little bags accumulate into a lot of lids. Thousands actually. It‘s great. I have had people collecting all over the place, Lake Grace, Newdegate, Dumbleyung, Kukerin Pingaring, Collie, Albany, Kalgoorlie, Yallingup, Perth, Kulin, Kondinin, Wagin, Mandurah, Varley, Lake King, Darkan, Denmark, Ravensthorpe, Barragup, Northam, Dowerin. Six Muzz Buzz stores in Perth, Cafes in Claremont. Hospitals in Lake Grace, Armadale, Collie, Narrogin, Dumbleyung, Wagin and Glen Haven in Albany. Schools in Lake Grace, Kukerin, Newdegate, Northam, T A F E i n A l b a n y , Plantagenet winery, Clean Away in Albany, Ag dept in Albany, and the recycle centre at Wickepin. These are but a few that I know, many I don‘t know as they are friends , family, neighbours, residents, work colleagues, and many others that I can‘t thank enough for helping me out. It has been amazing the support and enthusiasm I have encountered from so many people. My passion in my art practice is to create art out of everyday throw away materials, I have been doing this for a number of y e a r s p l a y i n g a n d

experimenting with materials. I enjoying the response of people when they realise what the materials are that I have used in my art pieces and sculptures, it is a challenge and very labour intensive and many times it relies on the generous donations of other people‘s rubbish. For those that don‘t know, I am busy collecting milk bottle lids or any plastic lid that is about the same size as them, and lids off long life milk containers, metal lids of beer bottles, wine bottles etc, but to save any decisions any plastic or metal lids that you may wish to start or continue collecting is okay. For further information just email me on [email protected] or ring 9865 4042. But its okay, for those die hard recyclers and those that have been collecting, and of course those that would like to collect, you don‘t have to stop, I am still collecting and you can still continue to collect after March when this sculpture is due to be finished as I have a couple more on my agenda. The present sculpture is for ‗Sculpture by the Sea‘ at Cottesloe in March 2010 and I am trying to collect 70,000 milk bottle size plastic lids any colour or type of plastic, which have to have 240 000 holes drilled in them and 120 000 cable ties to lace them together. But really what I am trying to say is thank you to all the people that have helped me so far in my project and all those wonderful people who take the time to collect their rubbish and donate it to a worthy cause, whether it is mine or someone else‘s. Like our wearable arts, your effort does not go unappreciated.

On Saturday 13th Mars may be found in the same area but higher after evening twilight. Mars on Friday 19th will be in the night sky until 3:30am on Saturday morning. With a telescope on a steady clear night you should be able to view the icy North Pole and some dark markings. JUPITER: the giant gas planet is now in the evening twilight and will be out of view until it rises at the end of March in the morning sky. SATURN: the ringed planet shining at magnitude +0.7 on Saturday 6th in Virgo rises at 9:20pm on the eastern horizon. On Saturday 13th Saturn rises at 8:44pm and on Friday 19th at 8:28pm. URANUS: the blue/green coloured gas planet at magnitude +5.9 on Saturday 6th in Pisces sets at 8:53pm on the West/south/west horizon. On Saturday 13th Uranus sets at 8:26pm in the evening twilight and will then not be visible until it rises in the morning twilight in April. NEPTUNE: the grey/green coloured gas planet in Capricornus is

not visible until March. METEORS: Some meteors will be visible in the Constellation of Centaurus near the Southern Cross in the south/east from Saturday 6th through to Friday 19th at 5 per hour this Saturday 6th. Other meteors may be viewed in Leo from Monday 15th (just naked eye needed). COMETS: so far this year there are 5 known comets in view for telescopes and if you would like the information please call. The Constellation of Orion the hunter (saucepan asterism), will be high in north night sky this fortnight, and is very good viewing for the naked eye, binoculars and telescopes of any size. The handle of the saucepan is the hunter’s sword and looks as if it is made up of 3 stars. It is actually a star forming region called M42 the Great Nebula along with NGC 1980, NGC1999, NGC1977 and NGC 1973. You can make out the nebulas with binoculars and very much more with a telescope in which will show the new stars of the Trapezium star cluster. The nebula is lit up by the star Theta Ori. The three bright stars almost in a row is the hunter’s belt and out of line, the same as the Egyptian pyramids which they were copied from. Under the star in the east of the three belt stars is the famous horsehead and flame nebula’s for which a very dark place is needed and at least an 8 inch telescope. To the south/west the bright blue star Rigal with the blue star Saiph is the bottom of the skirt. On the north/west side of the belt is the blue star Bellatrix is one shoulder with the arm holding the lion skin shield, which is the line of stars going north to south. A group of stars in the North/north/east is the head. The other shoulder is marked by the bright red supergiant star Betelgeuse with the arm extending north/east to a single star. Further on to two close stars and then to two other stars at the feet of the Gemini twins, this is the hunters club. Just south of the two close stars is the small star cluster NGC 2169 which is called the 37 cluster, and is upside down and back-to-front. One of the stars is a close double, see if you can pick it. To us in the southern hemisphere Orion is upside down and back to front. One nebula is very hard to view, this is called the Witch head nebula and resembles the face of a witch with nose, mouth, chin and forehead. Viewing through my 8 inch LX50 Schmidt telescope at my house is free of charge. Observations of the Sun during the day with the Moon day or night and at night the viewing of star clusters and nebula, also the pointing out of Constellations and the planets in view.

The 2010 road toll has started off badly with 12 Fatalities. Eight of the 12 have occurred in metropolitan area and four in Regional Western Australia. Last year we recorded 194 Road Fatalities with non-use of seatbelts contributing to 26% of fatalities with drink driving, fatigue and distraction contributing to the majority of road fatalities. The Lake Grace RoadWise Committee would like to remind drivers to stay safe on our roads this year. While less people have been killed on WA roads last year compared to the previous four years, even one death on the State‘s roads is one too many. As well as the

fatalities on western Australian roads we need to also consider the ‗hidden‘ road toll or those that have been seriously injured on the roads. No one should have to go through the tragedy and pain that is caused by road accidents. We must all work together to ensure our entire road system is as safe as possible and aim to be safe drivers in safe vehicles travelling on safe roads at safe speeds. Finally as children return to school please take care whilst travelling around schools and take note of the 40 km/h speed limit.

A willingness to address any grower concern no matter how large or small, controversial or otherwise, without ‘fear or favour'.

The Department of Transport is reminding motorists that from the 1 January 2010, registration stickers and discs will no longer be issued to light motor vehicle owners upon registration of their vehicle. Alastair Bryant, A/General Manager of the Department of Transport‘s Licensing Unit said this initiative has been made possible through advances in technology. ―The advent of new technologies has made registration stickers and discs redundant,‖ he said. ―The WA Police have Automatic Numberplate Recognition Cameras in addition to the new TADIS computer system in their police vehicles and hand-held units. This system enables the instantaneous retrieval of the current vehicle licence information.‖ Mr Bryant said that apart from no longer needing to display a sticker, the public will notice very little difference with the new initiative. ―The only change is that vehicle owners and custodians will no longer receive a registration sticker from the Department of Transport upon registration of their vehicle. Apart from that there is no other change to the registration process. ―Vehicle owners will still receive a registration notice in the mail, reminding them to renew their registration. Upon payment of the vehicle registration they will still be issued with a receipt, however, no stickers or discs will

be provided.‖ Mr Bryant said that to assist motorists with the implementation phase of this new initiative, the Department of Transport has put the following customer assistance programs in place:

From early 2010 motorists will be able to check their vehicle registration

expiration date online at www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing

Vehicle owners will also be able to check their vehicle registration status by

calling 13 11 56.

Further information will also be posted out to the vehicle owners with their

2010 registration papers reminding them of the changes.

A public information campaign will run on radio and in newspapers in late December and early January reminding motorists of the changes.

Western Australia is leading the nation in the use of automated registration checking technology. At this stage it is recommended that WA motorists still carry a copy of their registration papers with them when driving interstate to avoid any confusion if queried by local authorities.

We are here to help

Centrelink is committed to ensuring that people who live in rural communities have access to a broad range of Australian Government payments, programs and other assistance.

One of the ways we do this is through our network of specialist Rural Services Officers (RSOs) who provide a confidential, professional and free service. They live and work in, and understand their rural communities and are here to help.

How RSOs can work with you.

RSOs are located throughout rural and regional Australia. They respond to the needs of rural communities and enhance the awareness of, and access to, Centrelink programs and services.

Centrelink‘s RSOs can:

Visit you on your farm, in your home or at your business to provide you with information regarding rural services and support that you, your family or business may be eligible for. RSOs will confidentially discuss your individual circumstances and eligibility for various Centrelink rural payments, and other payments.

Step you through the application process for Centrelink‘s rural and related payments. Your RSO can assist with the completion of application forms and provide information about what else you may need to provide to Centrelink to support your claim. They can also take completed claim forms back to Centrelink for processing and help you use Centrelink‘s inline services.

Provide you or your family with a referral to a

Centrelink Rural Psychologist or Social Worker. Your RSO may also provide you with a referral to a number of other Centrelink specialists, such a Financial Information Services Officer, Indigenous Services Officer or Multicultural Services Officer. RSOs are also able to link you with other service providers who also may be able to offer support and assistance.

Promote drought assistance services and support to community groups and local service providers. RSOs can assist in organising, coordinating and delivering information at community events and seminars. They can also help you connect with community groups. Social groups and service providers in you local area.

Assist rural customers who attend one of Centrelink‘s mobile offices. Your local RSO accompanies the mobile office along with a Social Worker or Rural Psychologist, Medicare and other Centrelink staff.

Contacting a Centrelink RSO

You can arrange a face-to-face or phone appointment with Centrelink RSO by calling the Australian Government Drought Assistance Hotline on 13 23 16.

To provide you with prompt assistance, please let the operator know the area you live in, that you are calling about a drought-related enquiry and that you would like to speak with your local RSO.

If the phone service does not meet your needs or you cannot attend a Centrelink Customer Service Centre, the RSO may be able to arrange to visit you at a more convenient location (such as your home or business).

Leading scientists issue the Woodlands Declaration to WA Premier calling for urgent protection of Great Western Woodlands

Growing concern about uncontrolled wildfires and poor management of the globally significant Great Western Woodlands in the south west of WA has prompted more than 50 leading Australian and International environmental scientists to issue a public alert to the West Australian Premier Colin Barnett calling for urgent action to ensure long term sustainable use and conservation outcomes. The scientists have sent the Premier, and Minister for the Environment, Donna Faragher, the Woodlands Declaration, which details the importance of protecting the Great Western Woodlands - the largest remaining habitat of its type on Earth.

The Woodlands Declaration was released today by two of the internationally respected scientists, Dr. Denis Saunders, member of the Wentworth Group and President of WWF Australia, and Professor Stephen Hopper, Director, Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, England, the world‘s leading botanical garden.

―Protecting the Great Western Woodlands is of international importance,‖ the Woodlands Declaration states.

―We urge you to act decisively. Appropriate protective tenures and effective land management are needed to secure the biodiversity, ecological integrity, carbon stocks and the other social and economic values of this extraordinary landscape.‖

Cov er i ng 16 m i l l i on

hectares, an area three times the size of Tasmania, the Great Western Woodlands are by far the largest remaining temperate woodlands of their type on Earth.

―As a Western Australian, I don‘t think we‘ve appreciated yet how extraordinarily rare and important it is to have the Great Western Woodlands still intact,‖ said Professor Hopper. ―In other parts of the world, semi-arid woodlands like these have been largely cleared, degraded or turned to desert. The Great Western Woodlands are recognised as an area of global mega-diversity and are invaluable as a carbon sink in helping moderate global warming.‖

Dr. Denis Saunders said, ―Although still in good shape the Great Western Woodlands are now increasingly threatened by uncontrolled wildfires, the spread of invasive feral animals and weeds and the accumulated effects of mining and road construction.‖

―Urgent action is needed if we are to effectively protect species such the Regent Parrot, the Crested Bellbird, and many threatened native plant species,‖ he said.

Humour

Diner A man walked into a restaurant in a strange town. The waiter came and asked him for his order. Feeling lonely, he replied, "Meat loaf and a kind word." When the waiter returned with the meat loaf, the man said, "Where's the kind word?" The waiter put down the meat loaf and sighed, bent down, and whispered, "Don't eat the meat loaf." Mistletoe At The Airport It was slightly before Christmas. The trip went reasonably well, and he was ready to go back. The airport on the other end had turned a tacky red and green, and loudspeakers blared annoying elevator renditions of cherished Christmas carols. Being someone who took Christmas very seriously, and being slightly tired, he was not in a particularly good mood. Going to check in his luggage (which, for some reason, had become one suitcase with entirely new clothes), he saw hanging mistletoe. Not real mistletoe, but very cheap plastic with red paint on some of the rounder parts and green paint on some of the flatter and pointier parts, that could be taken for mistletoe only in a very Picasso sort of way. With a considerable degree of irritation and nowhere else to vent it, he said to the attendant, "Even if I were not married, I would not want to kiss you under such a ghastly mockery of mistletoe." "Sir, look more closely at where the mistletoe is." (pause) "Ok, I see that it's above the luggage scale, which is the place you'd have to step forward for a kiss." "That's not why it's there." (pause) "OK, I give up. Why is it there?" "It's there so you can kiss your luggage goodbye." Nearsighted A nearsighted minister glanced at the note that Mrs. Jones had sent to him by an usher. The note read: Bill Jones having gone to sea, his wife desires the prayers of the congregation for his safety. Failing to observe the punctuation, he startled his audience by announcing: Bill Jones, having gone to see his wife, desires the prayers of the congregation for his safety. Blonde Convention 80,000 blondes meet in the Kansas City Chiefs Stadium for a "Blondes Are Not Stupid" Convention. The leader says, "We are all here today to prove to the world that blondes are not stupid. Can I have a volunteer?" A blonde gingerly works her way through the crowd and steps up to the stage. The leader asks her, "What is 15 plus 15?" After 15 or 20 seconds she says, "Eighteen!" Obviously everyone is a little disappointed. Then 80,000 blondes start cheering, "Give her another chance! Give her another chance!" The leader says, "Well since we've gone to the trouble of getting 80,000 of you in one place and we have the world-wide press and global broadcast media here, gee, uh, I guess we can give her another chance." So he asks, "What is 5 plus 5?"

After nearly 30 seconds she eventually says, "Ninety?" The leader is quite perplexed, looks down and just lets out a dejected sigh -- everyone is disheartened, the blonde starts crying and the 80,000 girls begin to yell and wave their hands shouting, "GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE! GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE!" The leader, unsure whether or not he is doing more harm than damage, eventually says, "Ok! Ok! Just one more chance -- What is 2 plus 2?" The girl closes her eyes, and after a whole minute eventually says, "Four?" Throughout the stadium pandemonium breaks out as all 80,000 girls jump to their feet, wave their arms, stomp their feet and scream... "GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE! GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE!" All Alone Sandy began a job as an elementary school counsellor and she was eager to help. One day during recess she noticed a girl standing by herself on one side of a playing field while the rest of the kids enjoyed a game of soccer at the other. Sandy approached and asked if she was all right. The girl said she was. A little while later, however, Sandy noticed the girl was in the same spot, still by herself. Approaching again, Sandy offered, "Would you like me to be your friend?" The girl hesitated, then said, "Okay," looking at the woman suspiciously. Feeling she was making progress, Sandy then asked, "Why are you standing here all alone?" "Because," the little girl said with great exasperation, "I'm the goalie!" GI Insurance Airman Jones was assigned to the induction centre, where he advised new recruits about their government benefits, especially their GI insurance. It wasn't long before Captain Smith noticed that Airman Jones had almost a 100% record for insurance sales, which had never happened before. Rather than ask about this, the Captain stood in the back of the room and listened to Jones's sales pitch. Jones explained the basics of the GI Insurance to the new recruits, and then said, "If you have GI Insurance and go into battle and are killed, the government has to pay $200,000 to your beneficiaries. If you don't have GI insurance, and you go into battle and get killed, the government only has to pay a maximum of $6000." "Now," he concluded, "which bunch do you think they are going to send into battle first?" A Golf Club Walks into a Bar A golf club walks into a local bar and asks the barman for a pint of beer. The barman refuses to serve him. "Why not," asks the golf club. "You'll be driving later," replies the bartender.

On Saturday, January 2nd, the Tarin Rock Tennis Club hosted its annual Junior tournament. As usual, the club banded together to prepare the courts and surrounds and the day looked set to be a great success.

With numbers a little lower than normal, young people from as far away as Tenterden and Tambellup gathered together to enjoy a day of singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Older age groups enjoyed some round robin tennis with the younger ones playing in a knockout format.

People in the kitchen were busy preparing plenty of toasted sandwiches, rolls, sandwiches and fruit salad which was followed by a lovely afternoon tea and concluded with a sausage sizzle. The day was warm but there was a great display of tennis with many finals going to tie-breaks.

All children displayed great sportsmanship and court etiquette and many received honourable mentions from the parents who volunteered as umpires. All club members are to be thanked for their help and support in running this tournament as it would not happen without their commitment.

Everyone took on a role, whether in the kitchen, on the courts, running the board or just generally running around (just ask our umpire coordinator, Ed, who looked very busy all day walking around with various implements!!). Well done to everyone and we look forward to another successful tournament next year!!!

Corporate Bowls! We are starting an exciting new competition of corporate bowls on our brand new bowling green. We have already had a lot of inquiries about this and expect the rinks to all be filled, so please get your teams in quickly to ensure your business gets a place.

Come and experience the new synthetic green, which actually plays better at night than during the day (unlike the old grass surface).

The competition commences this Friday, 5th Feb at 6:30PM sharp.

Entry fee is $12 per team of 4. Bowls will be available if you don't own any. Nightly prizes.

We will be asking for submissions of interest regarding shifting the playing nights to a Thursday, accompanied by a sausage sizzle. This is due to some enquires from players who have indicated they would like to leave on a Friday night for a weekend away, yet would still like to compete in corporate bowls.

The Ongerup Netball Association and Netball WA have both put their affiliation fees up this year. The LGP Netball Club will not be increasing its‘ fees and will be absorbing the additional cost. This year the club will be paying more per junior player then we will be receiving. It is therefore imperative that ALL Senior Players

and Junior Parents willingly assist with ALL club fundraising especially players teas and home game afternoon teas. Other bits and pieces… Netball WA will be running a Presenters Workshop for Umpires and Coaches who would like to up-skill their presenting techniques on Saturday and Sunday 6/7 February 2010. Presenters Workshop Saturday 6 February 2010 9am – 5pm Ray Owen Sports Complex, Lesmurdie Sunday 7

FEBRUARY FITNESS

TAHRYN HAS LEFT THE BUILDING (for now!)

As you may or may not know, Tahryn has left us for 3 months to continue making her mark on the world. During this time ‘Menezes Pilates’ will not be

available. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to all the devotees of her classes. HOWEVER one must seize the opportunity to explore different avenues and we at ARC would love to hear what type of classes you would like to try in the meantime. SO if you have any ideas for new classes or the return of old classes or more of a particular class we would love to hear from you. Chat with your ARC Fitness Instructor, or contact Letisha at the Shire on 98902500 or by email [email protected].

I would like to personally thank all ARC members and participants for your patience and understanding to ARC during harvest and the summer holidays. Although we as ARC instructors do our best to maintain the ARC program there are certain times of the year that are very difficult for all of us and juggling family, farms and other work commitments do not always go as planned. Please be reassured where possible we do our utmost to maintain as regular a program as possible and when classes are cancelled it is with sincere regret and good reason. If there is ever a time where you are unhappy with the services of ARC I strongly encourage you to put your thoughts in writing or come and see me, we do not know how you feel unless you tell us. Your feedback whether negative or positive can help us continue to improve our service to you as an ARC participant and community member. Kind Regards Letisha Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do. - Confucius

A FRIENDLY REMINDER TO ARC PARTICIPANTS

To get the most out of your workout and prevent injury we encourage you to arrive to your class on time (maybe even 5 minutes before to catch up with your instructor).

Warmer weather = More water; make sure you are hydrating before, during and after class especially indoor classes.

For the comfort of all participants please bring a towel to all classes. Towels are available to hire from ARC for $2 a class.

Parents please note if you are bringing your child to class be mindful of other participants, distractions to the Instructor and your child’s safety. It is your responsibility to provide activities for your child to lessen impact on the class. ARC Instructors have duty of care to their participants not their children.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER TO AQUA PARTICIPANTS

If you are attending an Aqua class and do not have an ARC membership you will be required to pay $3 for the class and your pool entry.

Children under the age of 10 must be supervised by a responsible adult, if attending an aqua class please ensure your child is supervised adequately as this is not the responsibility of Pool staff or ARC instructors.

Please be mindful of patronage requirements and responsibilities. The Lake Grace swimming pool rules are at the entrance of the swimming pool.

Lake Grace Bowls Notes At last our Bowling Green is ready for action. A big thank you to all those involved in getting this fantastic project up and running. Over the last month we have played social mixed bowls and also our Championship Mixed Fours.

The results are as follows:

16/1/10 - 20 bowlers Championship Mixed Fours. Winners: S Hunt, R Fleay, A Chesson and S Carruthers.

It is important that cards be filled out correctly so accurate results can be nominated. As you can see, we have had good roll ups for these events and it has been very good practice for all on the new green.

Pennants start again on the 6/1/10 and we host Kondinin at home. Starting time rollup 1.45pm.

Our 2 day men's classic is almost here again. It will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday the 9th and 10th of February. Any bowlers that would like to play, please let Steve Hunt know ASAP.

Good luck to all in the coming weeks. Steve Hunt

Climate Change conversations worldwide have led to renewed interest in declining soil carbon levels, and the real possibility that agriculture might provide answers for the Sequestration of atmospheric CO2 as Soil Organic Carbon. Research Institutions from USA, Canada, Turkey, and Germany, have revisited soil disease causes as a component of sustainable agriculture research, including the building of soil carbon and the use of chemicals in agriculture. ―There is a common understand that the widely used herbicide Glyphosate is easily degraded and adsorbed in soils and thus, harmless for use in agriculture. We can demonstrate, however, that this conclusion is wrong and dangerous for farmers because in former risk assessments the behavior of Glyphosate in the rhizosphere was not properly considered‖ G. Neumann at Hohenheim University Germany. ―Glyphosate is now identified as toxic to Manganese ‗reducing‘ and Nitrogen ‗fixing‘ organisms in soil so that the availability of Nitrogen and Manganese may be markedly compromised‖ (Huber et al 2004). Soil scientist Burt Naude consulting with LawrieCo Biological Farming Systems (BFS) explains allied research informs us that systemic uptake of Glyphosate is

deposited in the root zone, feeding pathogens including Fusarium infections which cause ‗Crown Rot‘ and ‗Head Blight‘, also killing beneficial soil microbiology. GRDC announced a Cereal Disease Alarm last October quoting 19.5% loss of value of Australian Wheat crop to disease, equating losses of $70/ha. Trichoderma harzianum will be introduced in a upcoming cropping tour as a biocontrol of Rhizoctonia - another prevalent wheat disease. Speakers, Head Soil Scientist Burt Naude and LawrieCo Managing Director Adrian Lawrie will be discussing with farmers the BFS Sustainable Herbicide Program and highlighting the available research at Lake Grace, Feb 16th starting at 9am. Adrian comments ―BFS have proven technology and results to reduce impact of disease in crops and build Soil Organic Carbon. Integrated Biological Inputs reduce the negative effect of total dependence on synthetic fertilisers and chemicals in agriculture‖. Further Information: www.lawrieco.com.au ph. 8244 8558
