PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

— DIGGING OUT OF WINTER —It’s been a cold February. Looking

forward to March. I walk by my Boxster every day as I get ready to go to work. The summer tires are not quite ready yet to venture out in this cold weather. Sigh!

Fine Airport Parking A++

On February 6th, we had our social at Fine Airport Parking. Fine is an active sponsor and advertiser of RMR. (https://denver.fineairportparking.com/PORSCHE)

It was definitely not the night to bring the Boxster to the event. The weather was extremely cold and heavy snow. The snow was so fierce that I considered turning around and going back. However, I persevered. Glad I did. Despite the weather, there were at least 50 members who showed up.

I arrived at an impressive building. A large steel building capable of housing hundreds of cars – over 700,000 square feet! The social was in the reception area which presents very well. Jonathan, Jeremy and Debbie were the officer hosts of the evening.

We also were given a tour of their detail facility. A couple of Porsches that just went through their detail process were there for us to inspect. Very nice!

After the social, I decided to test out Fine’s service. I had to travel on business the following week and decided to use Fine for parking. I have been previously skeptical of the off-site parking services because of length of time it takes to be shuttled from the parking to the airport. I have been stuck at the airport for an hour or more waiting for the shuttle service. Not my experience with Fine.

I arrived at Fine at 6:52am and checked into valet using their app. It was as quick as putting my phone up to a scanner and the gate raised. A courteous gentleman greeted me, took my car and gave me a

claim ticket. I was directed to the spot where the shuttle would pick me up. I walked there and within a couple of minutes I was on my way.

I arrived at DIA and was at TSA by 7:06am – 14 minutes! Off I went on my trip in plenty of time.

On my return, I was met again with heavy snow. It was amazing that the pilot was even able to land. I went to the shuttle pickup lane. Given the weather, I was really concerned that I would be stranded in the snow and cold waiting for the shuttle. Within five minutes, the Fine shuttle arrived, and I was whisked to their parking facility. During the trip, I struck up a conversation with the driver. He told me that Fine has shuttles running every 10 - 15 minutes, 24 hours a day.

A perk of using valet is that when you give the driver your ticket number, your car will be ready for you at the reception area, fully warmed up and ready to go.

My exper ience wi th Fine was excellent. Everything from the facility to the courteous people was excellent. They get an A++ from me. I will definitely use Fine in the future.

The cost? Valet is $16 per day. Let them know you are an RMR member, and you’ll get a 25% discount. Sure beats the $28 per day rate for the covered parking at DIA.

Becoming an RMR Instructor

I mentioned in my last article that Dan Carlson tapped me to become an HPDE instructor for RMR. Over the next several articles, I’ll be writing about my experience of becoming an instructor.

I asked Dan Carlson how an instructor candidate is selected. It is an intricate process. During the course of a year, the Chief Driving Instructor (CDI) Committee watches the progress of

students. After each HPDE, the CDIs have a debriefing conference call where, among other things, the progress of students is discussed. Through the process, students are identified as potential candidates for instructor training.

It is not just driving ability that is assessed. The CDIs are looking at the student’s general demeanor, communication skills, and commitment to come out and be part of the program. It is a highly selective process. It usually takes participation in two or more seasons for a CDI to approach the student/driver to become an instructor. Minimum ten weekends at HPR is required.

Once a potential candidate is identified, the CDI starts reaching out to the person to see if there is interest. Comments such as, “I’d love to see you as an instructor someday.” may be given to the potential candidate to test their interest.

After the season is over, and the CDI is confident of the student’s interest, the CDI extends an invitation to apply to be an instructor. There is an application form that the candidate fills out asking about previous experience. However, the application really focuses on the “why” the person wants to become an instructor. The CDI wants to make sure that the person wants to become an instructor for the right reasons. It is not only ability, but the quality of the person and how the candidate will assimilate into the instructor team that matters.

I guess I made it through that initial process. I was invited to fill out the application and am on my way to the instructor training in April at Pueblo Motorsports Park. Next month I will discuss my preparation for the instructor training.

— N E W M E M B E R ? —Are you a new member within the last 12 months? Are

you a member that has never attended a New Member Orientation? Or are you a member who just likes to come together monthly to visit with your other PCA friends? Well, no matter which question you answered, our New Member Orientation and March Social is one of our biggest monthly socials during the calendar year! It is an event you should attend! I hope to see you at this wonderful event! This event will be held at Denver Auto Shield again this year. If you didn’t go last year, note that this event is again on a Saturday. For more information, see the ad in this edition of HighGear or check out our website!

Also, don’t forget to keep looking at our calendar on the website and reading the emails that we send out; the most recent information will be in the emails and on the calendar. Also, keep an eye on the National calendar. There are events you can attend outside of Colorado! Were you lucky enough to register for Treffen in Colorado Springs at the Broadmoor? You have to be quick! This event sold out in less than 15 minutes! If not, you still have time to attend Porsche Parade in Palm Springs at the end of June. I know of at least ten people that are going to represent RMR at this National Event!

If you want to do a Treffen-like event but missed out on the Broadmoor or you want to stay in this gorgeous state, then think about signing up for our Grand Loop Tour. Mark Taylor and I have been working on this year’s Grand Loop Tour which will go up into Wyoming and down south to Durango before heading home! And we are also working on the Grand Loop Tour for 2021! It is going to be big…or should I say grand? Well, I will go with Grandiose!

As spring is around the corner, hopefully you are planning on or have already had your Porsche serviced so you are ready for this year’s driving season to start in April! Is your car ready? Are you ready? Well I am ready! We have another jam-packed year of all sorts of events! Hopefully you will be attending many of them!

Hope to see you all very soon!

Prost!

TRACK TALK

Dan H. CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

It’s that time of year again…my guess is that over the winter months several of you have been thinking seriously about participating in your first autocross or track event this coming season. Heck, I know you have as our introductory Driver Ed/Autocross “101” seminar this month is once again sold out!

I remember what was on my mind before attending my first HPDE. Will my “baby” take a lot of abuse? What’s the process to sign up? What do I need to know beforehand? Do they have loaner helmets? What number do I put on my car? And most importantly, how good are the instructors?

Know that our Instructor Corps is outstanding – one of the very best, if not the best, in the country. A few of our instructors are national champion PCA club racers, others participate in DEs around the country, and several have been honored with our club’s Distinguished Driver Award.

I can boast all that I want about them but I am just a little bit prejudiced. There is, however, a very credible source that supports my opinion – the “Driving Evals” software that both instructors and students complete for each other after each performance-driving event. These student eval-uations of their instructors say it all. Like Uber, “Driving Evals” have a 1 to 5 rating for them, and we are proud to say that the average score for the group is around 4.95. And an-other testament – in most instances students request having the same instructor for their next event.

They’ve earned these high marks. They are committed. They work hard at it. They take a lot of pride in what they do. We see it every track weekend – they enjoy playing an instrumental role in their student’s progress and success.

By now you’ve probably heard about our instructor Keep Raising the Bar Higher theme. They’re pros, and they take their responsibility very seriously in teaching, making it en-joyable, and most importantly, making it as safe as possible. I can assure you that they are all about providing the very best student-focused experience.

We have a culture of sharing best practices and ideas, and they continually provide suggestions and feedback to our Chief Driving Instructor (CDI) team.

Jim Thorburn talks about the instructor selection process in his President’s column. Being selected is only the begin-ning – instructor candidates then go through an intensive

day of classroom training and on-track role-playing. Know that not every candidate becomes PCA nationally “certi-fied” the first time around.

After becoming an instructor, I can say that most, if not all, work very hard at improving their craft. They partici-pate in our instructor-only DE at Pueblo Motorsports Park where they ride with and learn from each other. Instructors also attend our annual clinics, sit in on our student class-room sessions at the track so that they can stay in tune with what’s being discussed, discuss teaching techniques with their fellow instructors, and do on-line performance driving skills and instructor training.

So, for those of you considering to join us at the track for the first time, know that you’ll be in good hands with whomever your instructor is – they are there to make you feel at home, focus on you and your driving, your car, your safety, and whatever you need to ensure that you have the best learning experience possible!

Keep Raising the Bar Higher

PAST EVENT : EISKHANA 2020

Early last year, RMR President Jim Thorburn was ap-proached by fellow RMR member Scott Pedram who is also the president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Audi Club. Scott, along with Shaun Seela, Audi Club Board Member at Large, wanted to reinvigorate the Audi Club program in the area and were hoping for a little help from RMR. Jim and the rest of the RMR board were eager to mentor the Audi Club in their endeavors in the 2019 season. In fact, last year Scott and Shaun were frequently seen on tours, at HPDE events, socials, and autocrosses. Scott even designed the October Autocross course; so if you have complaints about that course let him know.

Fast forward to December. RMR had the opportunity to help the Audi Club with an ice-driving event at Georgetown Lake. Jim Thorburn and I volunteered to co-chair the Audi Club’s event, and they in turn agreed to let us name it Eiskha-na 2020. After discussing ice safety concerns, we agreed the number of participants should be kept to thirty. We also added a post-event lunch to add to the fun.

The morning of January 19th, 2020 began early for volun-teers and participants alike. The volunteers began showing up around 7:15, along with a few early participants. The “early bird” participants were encouraged to drive into Georgetown to find breakfast or coffee. While Jim and I greeted the partic-ipants, Audi Club volunteers under the direction of Scott and Shaun set up the two courses on the ice.

PAST EVENT : EISKHANA 2020

Jim and I started off the drivers’ meeting by asking how many drivers belonged to the Audi Club and how many be-longed to PCA. There were about an equal number of each club represented. Also, as pointed out by Miata Club mem-bers, there were five of them in attendance as well. After a brief welcome and a reminder that drugs and alcohol were not allowed, we turned the meeting over to the Audi Club. Scott went over rules and driving tips, then explained how the driv-ers were to divide between the two courses for the first exer-cises of the day.

Car control, safety, and fun were the rules of the day. To get the driving activities off to a good start, a walking-speed, lead – follow instructional lap through the courses was led by Audi Club instructors. This slow drive allowed the participants to see the course and understand the cone placements. As the exercises commenced, instructors were standing at the start box ready to hop into cars and give tips to the participants to help them learn to control situations on the ice. Of course, everybody quickly found that slow speeds were the only way

you can get any kind of grip on ice. In most cases, the blazing speed of 15mph was only achieved when driving on the few areas which had a sparse covering of snow. Some drivers were not even able to go that fast.

While many people began the day feeling a little nervous about driving on the ice, smiles quickly covered every face around. After an hour of driving one course, the drivers switched to the opposite course for the rest of the morning. As all drivers found out, one course was easier to get traction on than the other because it had a little more snow. By the end of the morning, drivers were sharing their experiences with each other and giving tips that they found worked.

RMR’s Past President John Mackin won the award for most cones killed. He returned to the stop box with two stuck under his Macan S. One was especially difficult to remove. It’s a good thing this wasn’t an actual autocross, so the cones didn’t count. In fact, I don’t think anybody else dragged any cones back.

Sitting at lunch, I had the chance to talk to fellow PCA mem-

ber Pete Jensen. Pete and his wife Chris both participated in the event, although Chris had to leave before lunch. Pete said he had a good day. Though what I found most interesting is what he said about Chris’ day. Chris and Pete say they live on the second steepest road in Colorado. Last year Chris hit some black ice driving down the hill and spun. Naturally, this was disconcerting to her and she has been a little leery of driving the road in the winter since then. Pete was happy to report that Chris learned some things during the day that she can put in her toolbelt in case she encounters slippery conditions again.

Jim and I cannot thank the Audi Club enough, especially Scott, Shaun, and all the volunteers that came out to help and for letting us co-chair Eiskhana 2020. I think Jim and I learned much more from the Audi Club people this weekend than they learned from us. We look forward to continuing our mentor relationship with Audi Club Rocky Mountain Chapter in 2021.

IN THE ZONE

Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

In the past couple of months, two well-known monthly printed car magazines have announced that they will no longer exist, or will be offered only in digital form. That got me thinking about trends in PCA. It is a pretty common trend across PCA regions, including regions in this zone, for newsletters that used to be in print monthly to move to a less frequent print schedule or to stop print completely and move to digital form. There are lots of reasons for this. Print advertising commitments are on the de-cline as it is easier to measure digital advertising effectiveness by using “click through” data analytics. At the region level, finding the time and skills of PCA volunteers capable of chasing down members to write about club events, and then assembling and laying out a pre-formatted page-count newsletter, is getting to be a more difficult propo-sition. Thank your newsletter person at your next region event. And if you had a fun time, volunteer to do a write up!

That brings me to PCA’s Panorama magazine. To the best of my knowledge, it is healthy, improving all the time, and appreciated by the PCA member-ship. Here’s some insight as to how it is bucking the trends in the first paragraph, First, a fairly fixed portion of your $46 annual membership is dedicated to pub-lishing Panorama. That budget is a big help, but is not the full picture. Follow-ing that, the magazine is unique due to the very targeted audience that it reach-es. This allows advertisers to continue to place value on the less measurable results of print advertising compared to more measureable digital advertising methods. Next, PCA is growing. It may not be so obvious, but each time a mem-ber joins PCA, that person adds another few dollars to the next year’s Panorama budget, while at the same time increas-ing the ability of PCA to “market” the

growing circulation. So help protect Panorama by supporting our advertisers and also by getting your friends to join PCA.

This month, all zone representatives and national committee leaders met for a winter national staff meeting, led by the Executive Council (EC). I’d like to high-light some of the initiatives underway that you are likely to hear more about in the next year. Here’s a list:

• the National Tours Committee has now finalized standards for off-road tours. It’s good progress.

• the EC has now appointed a TRSS (Tire Rack Survival Skills) program li-aison to help regions pull together teen survival skills programs in regions as well as to feed regional input to the EC.

• the Club Racing Committee has made changes to mitigate some of the financial burden of traveling staff on re-gions that host PCA club races.

• the National Autocross Committee has formalized rules for a “Taste of Au-tocross” program to generate more inter-est and participation in autocrossing.

• the EC has approved increased sub-sidy levels for regions who participate in new member welcome, multi-region, charity and other types of nationally subsidized events.

• training sessions for region leader-ship by national committee member now fills a full 12 month calendar of “Region Focus” webinar events.

There’s actually a lot more to cover, but I’ll stop here for now. I’ll be shar-ing lots more details with your region leadership in our annual Zone 9 Region President’s meeting at the end of March.

And here’s an update of the key events

that I mentioned in last months “In The Zone” newsletter.

• PCA’s Treffen program remains on solid footing as a relatively new pro-gram. Treffen at the Broadmoor, led by the Alpine Mountain Region, sold out in 13 minutes. Registration included 293 attendees from 60 regions, representing 12 of the 14 PCA zones across North America!

• Fiesta New Mexico, hosted by the Roadrunner Region over the Memorial Day weekend is nearing capacity. This multi-region event MAY still have room, by the time this letter gets to you, so check it out at www.FiestaNewMexico.com.

• And finally, Phase 1 hotel registra-tion is well underway for the annual PCA Porsche Parade event, held this year in Palm Desert, California. Phase II ac-tivities registration opens March 31st at noon EST. By now, we are probably approaching 1000 car registrations, on track to make this one of the best-attend-ed Porsche Parade events ever. There is not a limit on rooms, so there’s still time and space for YOU! Go to www.porscheparade.org to complete your Phase I registration now!

I guess the final point is to say that PCA ran an analysis of all major car clubs. We’re the only one that is grow-ing. All others are remaining static or shrinking. On top of that, PCA member-ship growth, both nationally and within this zone, is faster than the U.S. econo-my. It’s not just the Cars, it’s the People.

Mark your calendars! The 37th Annual Colorado Concours d'Elegance is coming!

The Concours will be held on June 14th, 2020 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Arapahoe Community College Campus. The proceeds from the Concours will benefit Ability Connection Colorado's Creative Options for Early Childhood Education Centers. These centers provide early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services to over 600 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families each year.

The Concours typically sees over 14,000 spectators, who come out once a year to join car enthusiasts from all over Colorado and many other states who are showcasing over 500 limited production, rare sports and exotic cars.

The Porsche Club typically displays over 70 cars each year from the 356s to brand new cars.

Members of the Porsche Club started this event many years ago, so we always like to put on a great show for spectators by displaying a diverse group of cars.

If this is your first time attending the event, here is some basic information:

There are many ways to be involved in the event:

1) Register your car, 2) Volunteer, 3) Attend as a spectator, or 4) Become a Sponsor.

If you are interested in registering your car in the event, you have a couple of options:

• Display Only – No Judging • Club Judged - Judging based on cleanliness of the interior and exterior

Elite Concours Group - Judging based on a subjective review of each car in the class The Concours Class has been renamed to the Elite Concours Group to avoid confusion.

Registration to enter your car in the show is NOW OPEN at: coloradoconcours.org

The show is fun for all; however we can’t do it without some help. We are looking for volunteers to help with the entrance gate, parking and general help on the field. This is a great way to see the show and spend your day in the Colorado sunshine. Volunteers will also receive free entry, a free poster and free lunch!

Just visit coloradoconcours.org to sign up, be a volunteer or register as a Sponsor.

Sponsorship has many different levels.

Additional information will be provided in future newsletters leading up to the event.

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

Or is it gray, as in the gray market. I thought that whole market segment had been painted black years ago. Oh sure, I remember the raft of 911s that were entering the country in the ‘80s. I prided myself with being able to identify these infidels by their rear bumpers. Remember? On the gray market cars, the area between the bumper spacers was much wider than on the US market cars. So you could imagine my surprise when I got to talking with my friend Ilan Brown, who filled me in on the rays of sunshine that still radiate down on those rare individuals who want to virtually eliminate the chance of seeing themselves coming the other way, when they’re behind the wheel.

I owe it al l to the beauty of dog ownership. What? No, really. My usual canine route leads me a few blocks from my humble abode, past a line of store fronts/offices. And there’s one storefront sign that kept piquing my interest for months. It says “Cult Cars.”

Finally, one fine summer day, Mr. Cult Cars, Ilan, was sitting in his doorway with his Rottweiler, Omen, and the both of us, my dog Lily and me, couldn’t help but stop and say hello.

Turns out Ilan’s “day” business is residential real estate. He’s been at it for 12 years. But his passion, if you can call it that, is importing “cult” cars that are 25 years old or older.

“I’ve been through the scammers, the tire kickers, the Craigslist surfers. I don’t do it that way,” Ilan says. So what do you do? “My website and Cars and Coffee, mainly. I bring my cars, and schedule test drives for $50, which will be applied to a sale.” Does this work? “I sold a BMW 850i last fall. An Eagle Talon recently. An X5M,” Ilan says.

But I thought the gray market went the way of the dodo bird, as the manufacturers minimized or eliminated the difference in performance between U.S. and “rest of world” cars. “Not so,” Ilan states. Yes,

during the ‘80s it was madness. The dollar was 50% higher than the deutsche mark. And the market took off. Some 1,500 gray-market cars were imported into the U.S. in 1980. That figure ballooned to 60,000 cars in ’85. But that same figure translated into a huge dent for OEM importers and dealers. The Mercedes dealer network, it was reported, was losing some $300 million in sales per year.

Mercedes, Ilan says, responded by spearheading passage of the “25-Year Rule.” The way it works is that any car that was made more recently than 25 years ago must meet U.S. safety standards and crash-test requirements. OEM dealers supported the move wholeheartedly, in the interest of safety for consumers, they said. But a major motivation was to keep dealers solvent.

You couldn’t say the same thing about gray-market dealers. Following passage of the rule in 1990, the market shrank to some 300 cars, mostly Ferraris.

Then came the “Show and Display” rule, limiting usage to 2,500 miles/year or fewer. That one I remember. Especially for the 959 that Bill Gates allegedly imported … but couldn’t drive. But it’s the 25-Year Rule in which Ilan plays.

And, so? Even with the v i r t ual elimination of performance differences between the U.S. and the rest of the world, a lot of interesting cars never made it over. Some never left Europe. Until now. Ilan says he currently has two cars for sale. An Escort RS Cosworth and an Audi RS2. Do you remember the Cosworth? No? Neither did I. A quick search led me to the immortal words “homologation special version” of the Escort, meaning it’s a street version of the Euro- rally car.

And the Audi? The car that cemented the manufacturer’s reputation for building performance automobiles. This was the first-ever RS Avant (Audi-speak for wagon), and it was jointly developed by Audi and Porsche. “It’s got the Porsche

crest on the center caps, 993 side mirrors, the Porsche logo on the intake manifold, and a 2.2 liter 20V inline 5. Mine has a K24 turbo. Makes about 450 hp.” The stock version had 311 hp. Hmmm. How’d you find them? Ilan says the search is part of the fun. A trip to Europe that he can write off. Dealing with dealers who you know are wondering just who this crazy American really is.

Ilan found both cars about 20 miles from each other. In Belgium. He lined up a shipping broker to handle all the importation paperwork. But, before shipment, came an impor tant step: inspect ion. “They were what they appeared to be,” Ilan says. Which, because of stringent rules for service and maintenance in most European countries, is common. “I wouldn’t buy a car sight unseen,” he notes. Although the report on the Audi came back in Dutch. Ilan had to find a translator. And why two cars? “Two fit in a typical container for shipping.”

“I’m trying to establish the brand, and build credibility,” says Ilan. Customers go on his website, and see he’s the real thing. “I don’t have consignment cars right now, but that’s where I’d like to head,” he states. “No warehousing. Just finding and brokering interesting cars.”

Does the business work in reverse? “Not as well,” says Ilan. “Our duty is two and a half percent. The other way, it’s a 20+ percent duty.”

So, I had an idea. One day, on my canine route, I brought over back issues of the British car magazine Octane and the pub Sports Car Market. “Knock yourself out,” I said. “Between these two mags, you can find just about anything ever made that has wheels.” Ilan grabbed them. “Thank you!” he said. I chuckled. I knew what he was going to do for the next few hours.

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
