The inspiration to createHomespun is a place of inspiration. The magazine combines creative techniques with a vast array of styles and themes taken from a team of leading craftspeople throughout Australia and the world. The result? A publication that is at the forefront of the industry, made by people who are passionate about craft for people passionate about craft. Quite simply, we strive to be the number-one resource destination for craft enthusiasts in Australia.

We do this by providing our engaged audience with:• Step-by-step easy-to-follow project

ideas and patterns• A variety of crafts, from quilts to

bags to dolls• Inspirational photographs of

fantastic finished products• Interesting reads to engage and

entertain• Special offers and competitions

for our many enthusiastic active readers

Sound like a good mix? We’d like to think so! After all, September 2010 will see Homespun magazine reach its 10th year of publishing! There’s nothing like experience to put a publication in front.

The Homespun readerSo who is the Homespun reader? She is female, aged 25+ with a core group of readers aged between 35 and 55. Passionate about craft, she loves to create and make beautiful objects for her family and friends.

She is time-poor so she likes to create both large-scale quilts and smaller, quicker items that can satisfy her craft desires in a heartbeat. While time is a problem for her, when it comes to craft, money is most certainly not. She never fails to find the cash to put towards her passion, the thing that she looks forward to the most at the end of a long day of work or the retreat she looks forward to as a relaxing getaway from home.

She loves craft and she loves Homespun. And that is why we are the perfect medium to bring you and these thousands of active spenders together.

Innovation and inspirationAt Homespun magazine, we strive to inspire. And we think we do a pretty good job of it, too. In fact, in 2008 Homespun magazine was voted “Magazine that most inspired the retailers” at the Quiltee Industry Awards — so we must be doing something right. We inspire people by constantly seeking out new designers and showcasing their work to our dedicated audience, and by seeking out the freshest designs time and time again.

We also look to innovate. Programs we have created in our 10 years of existence include the Block Of The Month program, a very successful concept whereby several blocks of a quilt are released over different editions. This simple idea has been given finesse by using only the very best designers and material to create what has turned into an almost obsession for the many readers of our magazine. They simply love the concept, especially when the finished quilt is given to a charity for auctioning in order to raise much-needed funds.

Our readers have loved this program and since the first BOM appeared in Homespun, the editorial team has been inundated with touching stories of those who have made the quilt to support their loved ones:

“Here is a pic of the Breast Of Friends quilt I made

for my beloved sister. At present she is going through the breast cancer battle. She was diagnosed the week the mag came out with block one, so I just had to do it for her. Now, as she faces round two, she can hopefully feel the love I have stitched into every fibre. I have changed a few blocks here and there to be more relevant to our lives. As I was finishing the binding yesterday came the news we had both been dreading — that it looks like she is facing it again. She said the quilt would be arriving at the perfect time for her to take comfort in it. We had a huge cry on the phone and as the quilt was sitting on my lap, it received quite a lot of the tears. I also wrote a journal along the way with the story of the blocks, what I was doing with myself, funny stories, and pieces of the fabric from each block etc. I also made her a bag to carry the quilt in when she goes for treatments if she needs a bit more comfort. Then I made a heat pack cover with the leftover fabrics.

“I have loved doing this project and look forward to the next BOM.” — Helen, Tasmania

It is personal touches such as this that make Homespun magazine the industry stalwart it has become.

People don’t read Homespun for the celebrity gossip. They read it for the craft information and inspiration. That means that every single person who reads Homespun is an active spender in your market and a potential customer, just waiting to find you!

Catherine Sanchez, EditorCatherine Sanchez, a talented and respected craft editor, has a long association with Homespun.

Following work as an advertising copywriter after graduating from university, along with a stint in the corporate world, Catherine took on a freelance feature writing position on Homespun in 2001. By 2002, she was employed as Editor of Australian

Country Craft and Decorating, but soon after returned to the fold of Universal Magazines as Editor of Homespun Embroidery. Within a few months, Catherine was at the helm of Homespun and from this position, she has been able to navigate the magazine in many new and exciting directions. She was also the creative force behind our extremely successful 2009 and 2010 Block Of The Month initiatives, a program which will commence again in Homespun 12.3 (March 2011) with a host of exciting new designers on board.

With the marriage of her two loves, craft and writing, as well as a passion for all things crafty, she continues to ensure Homespun is one of Australia’s leading craft titles.
